via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
The Minnesota Wild have signed star goalie Niklas Backstrom to a $24 million, four-year contract, a source told ESPN.com on Tuesday.
He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and he had been the subject of numerous trade rumors.

Lebrun is on top of things.. If Lebrun is doing the leg work tor ESPN tomorrow they could be the ones breaking a lot of deals.

What—if anything—do you think this means regarding Gaborik?
If I were the Wild GM, he’d be gone. Hopefully, to someplace like Pittsburgh, who might just be desperate enough to overpay ridiculously (i.e., Staal) for another rental they won’t be able to keep.

That seems like a lot of money to pay a guy who plays for a team that’s made every goalie they’ve had since ‘02 look like a superstar. I’m quite sure he’s better than Harding or anyone else in the organisation, but is he really $4m better than a goalie they could pick up off the free-agent scrap heap? I guess you know what you’re going to get with Backstrom, so there’s less risk… but still, $4m less risk?

Signed for the $6 million a year that so many people thought he would cost. For Minnesota’s sake, I hope he continues to play this well. It’s good that they have a distraction out of the way nearing the playoffs, though.
