Will Ovechkin Ever Learn A Lesson?

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,
A few NHLers I spoke with this week about Ovechkin were upset at his actions and offered up comments such as, “He’ll get his,” and, “His day is coming.”
Ovechkin is one of the most skilled players to ever play in the NHL. Let’s hope this is the last time he does anything that might make voters want to knock him off his perch and from here on in, we only talk about his amazing ability to lift people out of their seats with breath-taking plays.
Let’s hope he has finally learned his lesson.

and guess what, he is still around.
Well, I don’t think anyone was planning on KILLING HIM.

The Ovechkin coverage is heavily saturated by now. I think we need some Crosby news to balance things out… Paul?

Believe me Moq, I could fill up ten pages on KK with all of this OV talk, trying to be very selective when posting.
Hopefully, the focus will shift soon.

Hollweg, Varada, Lindros and Ulf Samuelsson were all recipients of frontier justice of some sort.

And as far as Tootoo is concerned, certain guys have tried to take him out, but he always seems to be looking for it, so they haven’t had much success.

Ovechkin prides himself on being one of the league’s heavy hitters, even if a strong case could be made that he targets his opponents very selectively.
This sentence is the absolute truth. Too many times you hear Ovechkin’s supporters talk about him as if he just hits everything in sight. Not true. If you watch him for a whole game you’ll notice that on the forecheck he rolls off d-man who have thier head up and see him coming. But if they don’t he goes in with bad intentions. And this is more of the norm with him, not the exception. Just watch him objectively and you’ll see.

I love how Brophy ignores the cheap shots Ovechkin takes. Without complaint. See Craig Adams Super Bowl Sunday. Alex has been around 5 years. He logs tons of ice time. He’s very available for any of these tough guy players that spout off anonymously in the papers. If you have a problem with Alex go get some. He’s not hiding anywhere. He’s the best player in the world BECAUSE of the way he plays. Nobody else in the league can beat you with skill and intimidation. He needs to play physical to create space and turnovers. That’s what sets him apart from the Malkin’s and Crosby’s. If he “tone’s it down” he becomes just another 40-50 goal scorer instead of the 50-60 goal scoring MVP.

Oh and as Tim Gleason told the Washington Post yesterday “Guys want to run him but they can’t. He’s too damn big and strong”

My comment was mostly an attempt at irony. I’m confident that you scrutinize and select the most interesting Ovechkin articles.
Hopefully the focus will shift a little, because I’m running out of lucid things to write on the subject.

I saw the irony in your comment Moq.
Hey, we could get a trade rumor started, maybe that will work!

There’s a fine line between physical hockey and dirty. Don’t shove a guy from behind. Don’t stick your knee out on a hit. Don’t slewfoot another player. Without even mentioning retribution, it comes down to respect for the other players. While Matt Cooke’s hit may have been within the rules, it was unnecessary and disrespectful. This is what Ovechkin seems to have a disregard for. Playing with an edge is fine, but there must be control at some point.

Pittsburgh Penguins are moving to Winnipeg to become the WinniPenguins.
There, does that work?

Columnists like him “ignore the cheap shots (plural)” he takes because they can’t name another one, unless you count the time that Downie sucker-punched Ovechkin for kneeing him, but that doesn’t exactly make the latter a sympathetic character.
Oh and as Tim Gleason told the Washington Post yesterday “Guys want to run him but they can’t. He’s too damn big and strong”
He’s sure as Hell not bigger and stronger than Lindros. By the time Doig laid him out, running Lindros had almost become a game of one-upsmanship among NHL defensemen.
Of course, Ovechkin also doesn’t skate in predictable lines with his head down, which is a better explanation for why he doesn’t get run than his strength.

That’s not really a trade unless we get the Manitoba Moose in return. I’m not sure if Pittsburgh Wildlife contain moose, but then again, there probably isn’t a lot of Penguins roaming the area.
But it’s sad, I can’t even think of a good trade rumour. I’ll mail that guy at Hockeybuzz for inspiration.

You mean the one where he was reaching for the puck and Adams hit him legally? I swear, the entire Washington area needs a Hockey for Dummies book. Ovechkin is alot closer to paralyzing or killing somebody than he is playing a respectful physical game. It doesn’t help that his fat coach and fat owner are enablers.

Oh please, we’ve heard this so many times. This player is going to get it, that player will get his. And nothing EVER happens.
I remember when Tootoo first came into the league, so many players said the same exact thing about him and guess what, he is still around.
