Wings Bloggers Now Have An Inside Source!

from Behind the Jersey,

Okay, so the Red Wings really didn’t “sign me,” but I did get a great call this afternoon.
Four weeks ago, I interviewed with the Red Wings for one of five public relations internship positions. I am happy to report that one of my best friends and I both got a position. I start working late next month and I’m incredibly excited about the opportunity!

It’s nice that Michigan Kines is starting to line up internships for their undergrads. When I was in that program, that was something the students really wanted to see.

Tony- Thanks! smile I’m pretty excited to say the least. It’s been a dream of mine to work in the PR department for a hockey team so I’m on my way there.

Thomas- Well, Kines did not help line up the internship at all. I took initiative and contacted the PR department about their internships (and I know my friend did as well). I bet it didn’t hurt that I was double majoring in Sports Management AND Communication Studies. But it seems that once the motivated students hit their junior year, they start landing some of the bigger name internships (ie. Pistons, Wings, etc.)

That’s cool that Kines kids are starting to get some decent internships these days. When I was there, there were two or three people who landed internships with something better than Arena football (the Fury had an alum in a high position who would give Kines kids a break). The ones who did were either the self-motivated (NFL Films...now with SPEED/NASCAR), had a parent who got them a job (one girl had her dad buy her way into UM, then bought her a job) and me, a guy who worked my tail off on the research end and did some things that nobody had ever done before.

The thing you will quickly realize is that working in sports is just like working in, say, plastics. The only difference is that people say “wow, cool!” when you say you work for the Pistons or whatever. That’s why most Kines kids end up working in something other than sports.
