Wings Fun To Watch

from Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun,
I have to begrudgingly admit that the Detroit Red Wings—a team I have always cheered against on principle—have been fun to watch during these Stanley Cup playoffs.
They are a team so laden with European stars, they remind me of the old Winnipeg Jets of the WHA years.
Led up front by Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg—perhaps the finest two-way players in the NHL—the second coming of Reggie Leach in playoff scoring sensation Johan Franzen and the incomparable Nicklas Lidstrom on the blue-line, the Red Wings have so far looked every bit as good in the playoffs as they did during the regular season.

The real issue here isn’t the fact no NHL team with a Euro-Swede wearing the C has ever won the Cup; the real story will be the reaction of the Canadian Press when it happens!!!
I always thought it would be fun to watch Grapes’s head explode live and in living color!!!

Why I was hoping for Ottawa and Detroit to meet last year. ![]()
(Probably part of the “priciple” is that everyone has decided that Detroit Red Wings fans are the most obnoxious and reprehensible in all of sport - and I for one love that people I’ve never met have already made their decisions about my worth as a human being based entirely on what hockey team I cheer for. Methinks the shallow end of the gene pool needs more chlorine!)

And what principle is that? Douchebaggery? It’s not like the Wings have been the broadstreet bullies or penalty laden Ducks. Or maybe a classy, professional sports organization should not be lauded for their tremendous effort of continuing to field(ice) a solid team every year for the last 18 years.
What an obtuse stat. You do know that the Conn Smythe was never won by a European born player before Lidstrom won it. So maybe he’s probably the best choice to snuff your obscure stat.
Way to go out on a limb and throw some backhanded compliments. Maybe you should go back to watching
Jets hockey.
