Holmstrom, who was supposed to be on the first line with Pavel Datsyuk and Marian Hossa, had back spasms. Little wonder, with all the cross-checks he takes in front of the net. Holmstrom took the pre-game skate but couldn’t go.
“I’m sure it’ll stiffen up on the bus to the airport and the flight, but we’ll see how it is,” Holmstrom said.
Kronwall has a sore ankle.
“I hurt it last game (Monday against the Oilers in Detroit) when I fell down with a player on top of me, and slid into the boards. Nothing major,” Kornwall said
Also missing the game was Wings TV color-man Larry Murphy. His daughter was involved in a car accident and surgery is planned for today but a full recovery is expected.
Filling in for Murphy was Craig Simpson, who did a great job. Sometimes it is nice to ‘hear’ a different voice in the booth and Simpson as always, was bang-on with his game analysis.

God love Larry Murphy. Great player, did a ton for the Wings. And there’s no doubt he knows hockey and provides good analysis. But after hearing Simpson for a night, it reminds you how difficult complete sentences are for Murph. But maybe that’s his charm. It’ll be good to have him back. And obviously best wishes to his family.

Fighting through the injuries is part of Hockey, the Pens did it last season and are doing it this season, I think the Wings will manage just fine.
And I miss Murphy, he was a great player for the Pens, won two cups with us. Not a game goes by were Pens color guy Bob Errey doesn’t crack a joke about something that Murph did. Prayers are with his family, I hope his daughter is fine.

Simpson was great as a last-minute color sub. I was VERY impressed. I’ve heard him before obviously, but it was very interesting to see him thrown into a booth with someone he’s not familiar with, covering an org he’s not used to covering. And it was effortless, like he’d been covering Detroit for years. THAT is a good color guy… then again I’m not at all a fan of the “Hall of Fame Defenseman” (they feel they need to remind you of that, ad nauseum, as though it shoudl make up for the fact that he’s not very good on-air)...
Really, no reason to panic for Wings fans though. There is so much depth there, there’s nothign they can’t cover. Forwards start to go down? Call up Leino, or Abdelkader,Helm, or even Haydar. D-men start falling? Call up Ericsson, play Meech more, or give Kindl a look-see. Goalie injuries? Call up Jimmy. McCarty or Sammy go down and need an agitator? Well, there’s one Aaron Downey waiting…
That’s the one plus of all that depth right now. Wings fans should be able to sleep much better even if guys miss games here or there due to being banged up or injured.
