Wings Interested In Shanahan?

from Sam Weinman of Rangers Report,
While Shanahan’s agent, Rick Curran, told me just now that the door with the Rangers hasn’t been closed, he also said there remains considerable interest from teams around the league, including “a couple of general managers that would raise a few eyebrows.”
One of those teams is presumably the Detroit Red Wings, where Shanahan spent nine seasons before signing with New York.

How about the Pens? They could use a little grit and maybe a few goals...Any of you see Satan this weekend?? He’s go to ne the softest plaeyr I’ve ever seen. He knocks into someone and immediately is off his feet.

Detroit?
Only if he takes a negative salary and thus enables them to go over the cap. They are chock-full of players as it is and have no room.

this is what will happen. Shanahan will play for the Rangers this year. He will not sign/play, however, until either someone gets hurt, or the Rangers demote some of the younger guys

Detroit isn’t possible. Babcock and Shanny supposedly didn’t get along anyways, plus as Baroque pointed out, DET already has a sick logjam at both Forward and Defense, and cap issues.

Anyone else sick of this presumptuousness by the MSM?
I know I am.

LOL, why don’t these writers just think these things through before they write them?
Detroit already has enough talent in the organization to practically ice two NHL teams. God bless Shanny, we all love him for what he did here, but there is less of a place for him on this club than there is for D-Mac (yes, this is true because Shanny has the make-up of a top 6 forward, whereas D-Mac has the make-up of a bottom 6 forward, which is where the Wings need a body or two to play).

Yes, Detroit signs him to play on the vaunted 5th line, centered by the indomitable Mats Sundin and proceed to smash the single season scoring records, all with Dom Hasek on right wing. Follow hat up with a Nobel Prize for playoff performance and a Pulitzer for their combined dynasty memoirs.
Mark my words. It’ll happen.

As much as I’d love to see Shanny back in the winged wheel, this is impossible to happen. As stated numerous times, they’re over the cap as it is and have some cuts to make, and there’s no reason to even want him back in the fold. Nathan got it dead on - they don’t need any more top-6 talent, and are even having a tough time figuring out the bottom 6 (and maybe a 13th forward if they decide to go that route).
However, if they decided to dump Sammy to get Shanny, I’m sure that would please quite a few people…

Nah, because if they dump Sammy they’ve got Helm, Leino, and Abdelkader all showing they can be worthwhile for 10 or 11 minutes per night at the NHL level.

Hasn’t he stated quite matter-of-factly that if he isn’t in the Blue sweater this year, he’s done? I thought I read that somewhere.
But on the rumor/hope side, what team (other than maybe Detriot) WOULDN"T want this guy, even now? He’s still 2nd line material on most teams out there, and a great 3rd liner on ANY team. Plus the leadership and knowledge alone is worth a roster spot. The issue is completely up to Shanny, and if he trully wants to play for another team.

Shanny and Meech can battle it out to see who wears number 14 in the press box.

Well played, and accurate, IMO.

Los Angeles?
They need veteran leadership and have the cap room for him. I can’t see him moving his family all the way across the continent - but at least it makes more sense than Detroit.

Shame on you Paul,
What happened to your policy of not posting
ridiculous speculation?
If Shanny winds up here, I will apologize.

If Shanny was willing to take a lesser role a couple of years ago he would still be a Red Wing.
The man who would be captain was not given the job he thought that he deserved.
Nick earned it. Shanny can kiss my fanny, and yes, I’d boo him any time he plays in Detroit.
“BRING IT ON!”
“AGAIN!”
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Maybe this is heresy, but at this stage in their careers I think I’d rather have Sammy than Shanny.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 10/06/08 at 05:57 PM ET
Not heresy… I’d call it honesty. Realistically, how much does Shanny have left in the tank? One year? Two? He’ll be 40 in January. Samuelsson will be 32 in December.
And could Shanny out-point Sammy? Maybe yes, but maybe no. Let’s look at last year:
Shanny: 73 games, 23G+23A = 46, -2
Sammy: 73 games, 11G+29A = 40, +21
Shanahan would certainly hold some value for a lot of teams but, nostalgia aside, I’d take Samuelsson over him at this point, too.

HockeyinHD -
Hmmm, Shooting 5 Foot Wide of the Net vs Not Getting the Shot Off At All....
Indeed, it’s an interesting dilema.

No, he said he’d prefer to play for the Rangers this year, but he’d consider other options if necessary. He has NEVER said he’d be done. In fact, he said he’d probably be the last person to know he’s done.
Honestly, I don’t care where he ends up, as long as it’s not back here in NY, at least not in Broadway Blue.

He didn’t say which league, did he? So I say the league is the AHL and the GM is Bob McNamara. That’s right. Shanny will be signing a PTO with the Griffins and will battle Ville Leino for the LW slot on the top line.
Hey, it’s every bit as likely to happen as him signing with the Wings.

The Wings? No chance.
The Devils though? Perhaps. Lou was there during Shanny’s stint so that makes more sense.
