Wings Look Beatable

from Len Ziehm of the Chicago Sun-Times,

Now the Wings don’t look so scary without Marian Hossa, Jiri Hudler, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky or Ty Conklin. They all changed teams in the offseason. Hossa and Kopecky signed as free agents with the Hawks, though shoulder surgery has kept Hossa off the ice.

The two games with the Blues suggest the Wings have goaltending problems.

Someone remind Len that the Wings won a Cup 2 years ago without Conklin, Hossa, or Kopecky?

I know he might not be aware, since he’s in Chicago so postseason hockey is probably all new to him…

The Wings have goaltending problems??  Huet isn’t exactly a Vezina candidate, either, from what I’ve seen

Yeah, there was talk of goaltending problems last year too…

One game away from winning the Cup later and we’re still talking about this?

The Wings have focus and work ethic problems, and that includes (but isn’t limited to) the goaltending.

If the rest of the team starts playing 60 minutes of hard-working hockey, and softies are still squeaking by Howard and Osgood, then let’s talk about goaltending-specific issues.

It seems that way after two regular-season games.

Honestly?  I suggest that for the first month of the regular season there should not be allowed ANY stories like this.

The Flyers and the Flames are on pace for 164 point seasons, the Wings are on pace to go 0-82 and Ovechkin is on pace for a 245 point season.

Anyone want to take a bet that ANY of these things happen?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Blah blah blah, let’s see in a month or two and not base everything on two games over in Europe.

So far I’ve watched all or parts of games from nearly every team that’s supposed to be able to contend heavily for the Stanley Cup next spring.  I’ve seen the Bruins, Capitals, Flyers, Red Wings, Canucks, Flames, Ducks, Sharks, and Blackhawks all play.

Every single one of those teams looks beatable.  Also, just because I haven’t watched a Penguins game yet doesn’t mean they don’t belong in the category of beatable teams.

Chara looked a bit lost in the season opener against the Caps - he’s done
Capitals can’t play a consistent 60 minutes of defense and Varlamov looked terrible last night - write ‘em off
Flyers defensive corps isn’t as scary as it looks with Ray Emery behind ‘em - hello golf course
Canucks can’t stay out of the box or keep goals out of their net - At least there’s the olympics
Flames…uhhh…. ok, I’ll get back to you
Ducks can’t hold a lead - sorry, Charlie
Sharks have no team chemistry - same sad story
Blackhawks don’t have killer instinct - pack it up and go home, boys.

Somebody with more patience than I have, please revisit this in March and see where my predictions based off of two games have led.

As Dennis Green famously spewed “if you wanna crown ‘em, then crown they ass”.
