Wings Lose Even When They Win

via the Press Association at the Guardian,

The New York Rangers came from behind to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 and complete a satisfying weekend’s work in the NHL. Brian Boyle put the Rangers ahead in the 16th minute of the contest but Pavel Datsyuk levelled the scores in the second period.

However, the home side finished strongest and after Dan Cleary had netted with 2min 3sec remaining, Kris Draper put the gloss on the victory with an empty-net goal seven seconds from the end.

Jimmy Howard excelled in the home net, stopping 28 shots – including a penalty save from Ryan Callahan in the second session which kept his team just a goal adrift.

The result enabled the Rangers to follow up Saturday’s defeat of the Buffalo Sabres in style, while Detroit’s disappointment continued – they had gone down 4-3 in a shoot-out to the New Jersey Devils the previous night.

Perhaps Dan Cleary and Kris Draper sounded sufficiently Irish to be mistaken for Big Apple dwellers?

Standard British hockey reporting over here, then. If it’s not something negative about the sport then it’s something reported wrongly. And only a day after Top Gear and the BBC gave it some good publicity that, for once, wasn’t based around the fighting aspect. Oh well.

The Guardian hired Mitch Album to write that article, I am certain he was there.  D’oh(!).

I think you’re right, he was sitting next to Gordie Howe and Terrible Ted… least that’s what he said.

Clearly this guy just looked at the box score before doing the write up, but mixed up the teams somehow.

Do thy not have editors at The Guardian?

To be fair, the Guardian is famous here for its long and noble tradition of spelling and grammar mistakes (hence its nickname, the Grauniad)... but this is one step beyond.

The mistake is probably the result of the conflict between the European way of writing down scorelines, with the home team first (e.g. NY Rangers 1, Detroit 3), and the American system which is of course the other way round. Easy mistake to misread the box score if you aren’t sure which way everything goes round, and I’d be shocked if the editors would have known the correct score/interpretation either.

P.S. The Top Gear episode last night was quality, but I did laugh when the player they pretended to run over was Sean McMorrow, the former Sabres goon…

I like the guardian’s coverage of foreign affairs, but their sports reporting is terrible (unless it is about football/soccer).

Still, this is really funny.

That explains one line of “the home side finished strongest” but doesn’t explain transposing the scores,  The New York Rangers came from behind to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 and complete a satisfying weekend’s work in the NHL, transposing the winning and losing teams, and putting players on the wrong teams though, does it?

I have seen writers mix something like that up and confuse the teams in a sentence but a full article. Does the Guardian not have editors?
