from Jerry Green at the Detroit News,
This is not the best Red Wings team of recent vintage. It is not the dominant team in the NHL any more. With Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Andreas Lilja, Valtteri Filppula, Danny Cleary, Jason Williams, Niklas Kronwall, Darren Helm and Brian Rafalski having missed games because of injuries or illness, the Wings continue to play competitive hockey. They have lost some 150 man-games this season, yet have a winning record. They have been forced to load up with fill-in players from Grand Rapids.
They play hurt. Just hockey players.
That’s guts, or courage—a trait for which I have huge admiration.
And when I watch these modern guys, my old nostalgia syndrome begins to purr.
Also, in case you missed it, the Wings have recalled Mattias Ritola tonight. Not sure if there is an injury we are not aware of or just a move the Wings wanted to make.

Pens have lost more man-games due to injury this season and are in first place.
Even if that is true (which I seriously doubt), it’s not a fair comparison. The Wings’ injuries are higher up the depth chart, they play in a tougher division and conference, have the more difficult travel schedule, etc.

Jimmy from Windsor, you need to stop smoking crack. The Penguins are not in first place, they don’t lead the league in man-games lost to injury, and they don’t have any appreciable depth. They are a 2-man team led by Crosby and Malkin, with Guerin and Kunitz chipping in every now and then. Crosby and Malkin play nearly the entire 2 minutes of every power play and do very little if any penalty killing. When Malkin was injured, the Pens weren’t a very good team. Stop smoking crack!
