from Dave Dye of the Detroit News,
The number of regular-season fights increased from 466 in 2005-06 to 664 last season, according to data compiled by hockeyfights.com….
At the current rate, there will be more than 920 fights this year….
The Red Wings, however, remain an exception to this developing trend.
The defending Stanley Cup champions were last in the NHL in fighting majors last season with 21, compared to 70 for league-leader Calgary.
Five games in, the Wings are also one of three teams who haven’t gotten into a fight yet.

Last season, the Hurricanes had a “no fighting” policy. It’s nice to think that you’ll end up with loads of power play chances, but what really happens is other teams take liberties.
Carolina found out the hard way when Matt Cullen was railroaded by Colton Orr last Boxing Day. Cullen was concussed and hasn’t truly had a full recovery yet.
Orr knew that he would be able to get away with his violent hit because the Canes had the well-publicized “don’t fight, don’t retaliate” rule. Later in the game, when things got chippy, Sean Avery suckerpunched Andrew Ladd while Ladd was being restrained by linesman.
In that one game alone, two players were needlessly injured because the team didn’t believe in fighting and they didn’t have anyone who was capable of seeking retributive justice.
I wish it wasn’t necessary to carry and dress a tough guy every night, but the reality is that other teams will prey upon teams who don’t.
After that day, Carolina did a 180 on that issue, brought in some toughness, and voila… teams stopped taking cheap shots at the Canes.

The Wings need people to step up if & when teams try to hurt Hank, Pav, Hossa, Nick, et al.
Maybe that guy is Kopecky, or Lilja, or Cleary.
Unfortunately, the time will come.
