Wings Show Interest In Laperriere

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

You can take this one to the bank - the ones that aren’t soon to be run by the government, too: The Detroit Red Wings are interested in Ian Laperriere as a deadline rental.

Lappy hoisting the Cup in a Wings uniform this June - how does that sound, Av-Ahaholics?

I don’t think Wings fans would stand for it, and I don’t think Holland is stupid enough to.

Dater is obviously desperate for something to write about aside from how horrible the Dive are.

Dater is getting as bad with trade rumors as certain anonymous bloggers we won’t mention.  Anything to draw attention to his writing, sell his book, or get hits on the company website, a company he is worried will fail.  Obviously, it is working.

It doesn’t surprise me that he’s interested - but there is a difference in talking what would be needed to make a trade and casual kicking-the-tires inquiries.

Lappy would be a great addition to the team.  And at the very least it would eliminate the possibility of him running Lidstrom again. smile

But there’s no room, unless someone is traded.  Some people don’t like Kopecky but he’s basically playing for free (for professional athlete standards).  That makes him valuable.

Are you kidding? Maybe a small percentage of blind homer fans would hate it… maybe. There is no rivalry anymore, and Lapperriere was a King when there actually was. There is no bad blood there. And the hit on Lidstrom? It wasn’t overly dirty, Lidstrom said he even put himself in a bad position, and Laperrierestood up paid the piper to Downey (and then turtled, but that’s not the point). It’s over and done with in hockey circles.

And a player like Lappy, or Tucker, or Neil is desperately needed on this team.

That would be the best thing about it.  smile

But seriously, what would the trade be for?  I have no idea what Colorado has, so I don’t know what they would be looking for in a rental - especially since he might just sign with Colorado again after the season (although I gather the contract negotiations haven’t been going all that well).

So explain to me why the Wings would be trade for Lapp when we already have Downey and don’t play him or even let him come up from Grand Rapids?

I don’t think its that desperate. We don’t need a tough, an aggravator who takes stupid penalties, or more of this magical grit. What we need is more effort from the lines we’ve got. And it’s coming around. A little extra speed and pursuit on the forecheck in the form of Helm, Leino and a rejuvenated Draper/Maltby after their benching has made a big difference.

I love Downey and hate the fact that this team refuses to carry an enforcer this year. I’ve always stated that Downey absolutely should be up. But that’s really the “enforcer” issue.

But this is about the playoffs, and despite Downey’s heart and major hustle, he lacks the hockey skills needed when rolling 4 lines in a playoff series. The bottom line is that Laperriere is a much better hockey player than Kopecky or the shells of McCarty and Maltby. Someone would have to go and others would have to sit, but grit and depth are going to be key again this year… that’s where a player like him comes in.

Without touching on the subject of fans being homers, I have to disagree with you.  It’s not just that we couldn’t see a member of the Dive become a Wing - hell we’ve learned to tolerate, then love, then tolerate again, Chris Chelios. It’s that we also value our prospects more than anything that Lappy could bring as a short-term rental...and the thought of sending one or more of them to Colorado is nauseating.  Not just because we still hear the echos of a once great rivalry, but also because Colorado is the worst team in the Western Conference...it’s where promising hockey players go to ruin their careers.

Am I a homer fan for saying that?  You’re damned right I am.

Also draft picks.  The pick that became Mike Green went to Washington for Robert Lang.

Not much to add here- on account of Gabriel saying everything I’d want to say, better.
