via the AP,
The Detroit Red Wings signed right wing Dan Cleary to a five-year contract on Tuesday, keeping a player who scored 20 goals for a second straight season for them.
update from FSN Detoit, 5 years, $14 million.
added 7:45pm, more from Ansar Khan at Mlive…
added 9:17pm, much more at Red Wings Corner on the signing and it looks like Lilja will have to wait until after the playoffs to talk contract again…

It’s a fair deal for both sides. The Wings get a gritty scorer for less that 3 mil per year. And Charlie Buckets gets a nice fat paycheck for five year from the team that rescued him from the nether regions of “First-rounders Who Were About to Piss Their Careers Away”.

Holland is a “fair market value” thief! This is a steal.

It sounds as if Lilja might be the odd man out, since the Wings have so many defensemen for next year.

Yup and good riddance!
As far as C’buckets… Awesome deal for both sides!

Probably what happens with Lilja depends to some extent on whether or not Detroit can retain Stuart.

KHAN!:
This might be the last signing for the Wings before the end of the season. They offered defenseman Andreas Lilja a two-year deal earlier this season. He turned it down. Maybe they’ll sign him after the playoffs, or maybe they’ll replace him with one of their younger defensemen.
Here is hoping Meech and/or Ericsson gets the Lilja spot!!
As for Cleary, all I can say about that is - -WooHoo!! Good for Cleary, earning some real money; but even better for the Organization, what a deal.
Remember, Homer is at 2.25 for this season and the next two as well. Wings have two 1st line forwards for 5.3 season.
You have to wonder what magic tonic Holland slips into their beverages while they talk numbers. Must be some sort of “contract pillaging drug”.

Bruce “The Highlander” MacLeod has Cleary’s reaction to his new contract:
From Dan Cleary after Tuesday’s game ...
-- Ever since I came to Detroit a few years ago, it’s been a good fit I think for both sides. This is one of the proudest days I’ve ever had other than being married or having a child. I’m really happy about it and really thankful as well.
-- Probably making the team on a tryout was the hardest part. I found a role the first year and I think I tried to expand on it each year.
-- Hard work pays off and I’m really thankful for today.
-- Think about testing the market?—I really never (did). I always felt inside that it would get done. What else can you say? For me being a Red Wing is truly amazing.
Way to Go Dan!!!
