Wings/Stars Morning Notes

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Turco’s Stars’ teammate, Steve Ott, is from Windsor, Ont. and naturally, grew up as a Red Wings’ fan. Ott, an agitator along the lines of Sean Avery, another ex-Detroiter, but it wasn’t him, or the Grind Liners that he followed. It was Steve Yzerman.

“Being so close to Detroit and especially in their heyday, when they won three Cups there and became a very successful team, I was a huge fan,” said Ott. “All my friends are still Detroit Red Wings fans to this day, so it’s quite the controversy. My buddies are cheering for us and them at the same time. They were just such a fun team to watch.”

Here’s hoping that he gets to have lots of “fun” watching the Wings win this series (and another Cup too)!

“The way we feel about Detroit is, they finished first, but we matched them pretty much all season long. We were just on their heels until a bad March.

Not really, Steve. On a game-by-game basis, your Stars were never within five points of the Red Wings after game 24. While you seemed to be three points back on March 1st (February being by far your best month, and the Wings’ worst), Detroit had two games in hand, both of which they won. So the gap was actually seven points.

The average gap between the two teams over the last fifty games was 14.1. I wouldn’t call that “matching” by any stretch of the imagination.

Want another enlightening stat? The Stars’ top three scorers (Ribeiro, Morrow, Modano) combined for one goal, one assist, and a -16 against the Wings this season. Can you blame that on Turco?
