The economy is on the minds of Red Wings players and management a lot these days. Despite a Stanley Cup championship team and a long run of success, the Wings have resorted to price cuts on tickets and other creative ways to get fans in the building. And that was before the “Big Three” Michigan automakers took an even worse turn the past few days, doing a dangerous dance with bankruptcy and federal bailout red tape.
Chelios is the owner of two “Cheli’s Chili Bar” restaurants — one in downtown Detroit and another in Dearborn — and, while not providing precise figures, he said business is down at both spots. And if the Big Three automakers do not receive any emergency federal assistance, Chelios said, he doubts that his and many Michigan businesses would survive long. Even if the bailout money comes, Chelios said many businesses will close, and maybe his.
