Wings Talking Contracts

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Holland’s top priority is signing No. 4 defenseman Brad Stuart. He earned $3.5 million this past season and could get more money on the open market. But to remain in Detroit, he undoubtedly would have to take less. Andreas Lilja is another defenseman who must decide whether it is best to take less to stay or get a better deal elsewhere....

Holland has made qualifying offers to five restricted free agents: forwards Valtteri Filppula and Ryan Oulahen, defensemen Kyle Quincey and Jonathan Ericsson, and goaltender Jimmy Howard. Filppula, who turned down an offer of a long-term deal earlier this season, could be a prime candidate to receive an offer sheet from another club after July 1, which the Red Wings more than likely would match.

Stuart’s wife didn’t like living in Boston. She’s a Cali girl. That’s why Stuart ended up in L.A. I don’t think she is going to like Detroit any better than Boston. At least we have an ocean here but I guess you have a lake. Anyway, its way too cold for this princess so I can’t see Stuart signing with Detroit unless no one else wants him this side of Canada.

As I said in another thread, it’s more his loss than ours if he doesn’t stay. It would be good to have him, but if his family won’t be happy here, there are other alternatives both within and outside the Red Wings system.

Well it’s a little more complicated than that, kevin. Mrs. Stuart has children from a previous marriage, whose custody status would be altered were she to move out of state (I’m no lawyer and, no, I don’t get it either) So a whole bunch of legal wrangling would have to occur before they could uproot and move to Detroit. I’m sure that’s all being worked on even as his contract is being negotiated.

I’d love to see Stuart come back, but we shall see. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up back in SJ though.

Aaaah, the plot thickens. I’ve even heard of cases where the custodial parent can’t move outside a certain radius within the same state. I think the basic idea is that moving the children outside of the proscribed area would limit/restrict the non-custodial parent’s access.

Well seeing as Stuart is a millionaire hockey player I would think he could work something out (ie $$$$$$$) with the kid’s dad. Can’t believe he married somebody else’s problem. Why do I get the feeling she’s an “exotic” dancer type.......

Kevin:

Sometimes money has nothing to do with it - it’s the state Child Protective Services Department (or whatever name a state uses for it), and even if the custodial parent would agree to visitation, payment or no payment, he would be breaking the law if he permitted contact.  What the adults involved might agree to is irrelevant where the state’s interest in the welfare of the children is concerned.

And every woman who has children from a previous relationship isn’t a “problem.” Don’t be a donkey.
