Baffling. Consider the remarks from MacLeod regarding McCarty’s, including last nights game:
-- Darren McCarty can still fight. He’s not a heavyweight, but he’s getting the job done and I never would have thought he could when he joined the club last spring. He clearly beat Zack Stortini, Monday night, making it two fights in a row that he’s won. Aaron Downey is a better fighter, but McCarty is a better hockey player, more skilled, more positionally sound. Again, I never would have thought it last spring. McCarty has turned me into a fan
.
Really puzzling move.

It’s only being done so that they have some flexibility regarding goalie injuries. With McCarty having been waived, they can immediately send him down and bring up a goalie. He was put on waivers last month too for the same reason.

The Wings may be looking to make a little cap space for themselves by opening an extra roster spot, or they may be looking to bring another forward up from GR.
Considering Cleary’s out with that eye thing and he may end up being LTIR’able because of it, I suspect the Wings will be calling someone up to replace McCarty.
My guess would be the Wings are looking to give Leino a little bit of an NHL taste, probably for the couple weeks that Cleary’s out.

McCarty will get waived again in a month. This is exactly what they did with Downey all last year and he remained with the team all season.

See A2Y for an update and although I did not beat him with the news, I do wonder how he got it!
