Winter Classic Should Be Boston/Washington

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
...You’d expect, then, that the NHL would have finally gotten around to inviting Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to perform on such a stage wouldn’t you?
Ah. No.
Instead, the NHL and broadcast partner NBC have settled on the Philadelphia Flyers, a compromise decision according to multiple sources.
No offense to Simon Gagne, new Flyer Chris Pronger and repatriated bad-boy netminder Ray Emery, but the decision to have the Flyers face off against the Bruins, announced at a press conference in Boston Wednesday afternoon, is a decision that simply flies in the face of logic.
If the point of the Winter Classic is to showcase the game’s greatest talents on a grand and unusual stage, to appeal to an audience that might not otherwise tune in to NHL games, then it behooves the NHL to do it right. It behooves the NHL not to compromise on a product that has proven to achieve those lofty goals.

i dont even care who plays these games anymore. if there isnt a fight in this years, im not even bothering with the hype anymore. keep those hands warm Carcillo and Lucic, because if there isnt a throw down on national TV outside - the novelty of bad ice, drunks and Costas are TOAST.

You know we can do this all day, LeBrun: who should be playing in the Winter Classic and why. It’s settled and Ovechkin’s time in the WC will come later. Jeez…

IMO, the 2010 Winter Classic should be re-dubbed the Crony Bowl. Jeremy Jacobs and Ed Snider are two of Bettman’s “boyz” from way back.

Seconded. That would be as much of a blast as the Detroit and Chicago game was.

Third. Habs v. Bruins. That is Classic. (And, we might get to see some fighting! haha!)

I think bickering about who should play who in the Winter Classic is the wrong way to go about things. What’s most important is that the NHL finally did something right and found a great way to commemorate and promote the game, provide some great entertainment and establish something that should be a tradition for years to come. Football fans have their big holidays, it’s nice for us to finally have one.
