Wisniewski Hit On Seabrook Tonight

via Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,

What a cheap shot by Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski on Brent Seabrook in the second period on Wednesday night.

A high-stick/elbow/charge to Seabrook’s face, and all he got was a minor penalty for charging. Gutless no-call by referees Paul Devorski and Ian Walsh.

Wisniewski’s head shot knocked Seabrook out and he retired to the dressing room. The Hawks later announced that Seabrook wouldn’t be returning to the game.

watch two videos of the hit below… the first from the Ducks crew and the second is a bit raw and from the Chicago crew…

The hit on Seabrook could be seen as on-ice justice; Seabrook hits Perry in the head from behind into the boards, and then Wisniewski goes after Seabrook when the refs don’t do anything about it.  Seabrook doesn’t get hit if the refs blow the play dead on his original hit against Perry, and if there was a rule against blows to the head they could.  Seems like the same story over and over again, ad infinitum.

I’m pretty sure Seabrook was selling it like many other players would.  He did have the presence of mind to break his fall with his elbow, so I’m not buying his whole close-my-eyes-to-feign-losing-consciousness-before-I-fall bit.

Paul:

Sorry to hear.  But, if Colin Campbell is responsible for delegating punishment, you should be unconcerned.  ‘Cause my goodness he’s awful….let me tell how MANY times he’s failed to blah blah blah blah blah….

Agreed on the hit, Paul. Cheap shot. And to make matters even worse, Ducks TV color commmentator Brian Hayward’s first comment about the hit was to question whether or not Seabrook was faking an injury.

Regardless of whether Seabrook was injured or not, there’s no way anyone could’ve known at that time. As such, in that case, the comment was entirely inappropriate, whether Seabrook was hurt or not.

Bush league comment by Hayward. Totally uncalled for and highly unprofessiional. Like Wisniewski, Hayward should be disciplined too.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from watching NHL center ice, it’s that the ducks have some of the worst play by play guys in the league.  I dread getting anaheim feeds.  They’re so boring to listen to and would rather banter with each other than actually call the game.

I downloaded a ducks/wings torrent a while back that had the audio drift so that it didn’t match up to the video.  I didn’t even realize it for half a period because they weren’t actually calling the game they were watching

Posted by DetroitNick on 03/17/10 at 11:44 PM ET

Moocat, you may have seen a different replay than I did.  But on the video feed from Anaheim, it sure looked to me like Perry came around behind the net and turned to play the puck, at which point Seabrook hit him high from behind, which drove his head down into the boards.  I’m referring here specifically to the first three seconds of the video.  Didn’t look overtly dirty, but could have been a penalty for boarding or something similar.  If the refs had made that call, they could have pre-empted everything that came afterwards.  Doesn’t justify what Wisniewski did, of course, but if the league won’t do anything about these types of hits they’re just begging for vigilantiism.

If you watched the end of the first period Wiz was jawing with Seabrook then. The whole point of the play was Wiz gave a premediatated head shot to Seabrook, he left the blueline, left his skates, left his elbows up, and hit a defenseless player. The play is stand alone like all head shots should be. Seabrook ‘s hit on Perry was clean and Perry had the puck, what came after was a hack play and is gutless.

that hit was SOOOOOOO much dirtier than ovechkin’s baby push. absolutely intent to injure. vicious. doesn’t matter what instigated it, doesn’t matter who did it and it doesn’t matter what the result was… despite the fact that the NHL usually bases their punitive judgments more on these things than on the simple act in and of itself. that was NOT a hockey play. if the players feel the need to “police” because the refs aren’t doing it, you challenge the dude to a showdown. that’s exactly why fighting is still allowed in the NHL, to prevent gutless BS plays like this. typical duck.

and i have to concur that the Ducks announcers are truly HORRIBLE. i have learned the hard way through my center ice package which feeds to avoid. the ducks are definitely up there.

Both hits were gutless and seabrook’s hit was just as bad because perry had his back to him and he shoved him head first into the boards.

Seabrook was totally selling the hit as he stands up and is fine afterwards. Players leaving the game doesnt mean anything seeing as how that is a tactic some teams use to make the incident worse than it really is in hopes of the player getting in more serious trouble.

Johnny…I’m sorry but I repeatedly watched that replay and Seabrook’s hit was shoulder to shoulder right from the side.  Perry gets the puck, takes it behind the net, skating backwards, just as he passes the puck up the boards and Seabrook comes in and hits him with his shoulders.  He was in Perry’s side view.  Dude…that’s a good hit…it was just a lot of power that threw him off.

There was no way Seabrook was selling that.  If you look at anyone’s face when they get knocked out they all look like that and fall limp.  Maybe he was only unconscious for a second…but he definitely was.

I watched the video a couple of times and was pretty sure it was a dirty hit, but I just watched Wiz’s video reaction on the ocregister.com website and he said that it was their heads that collided.

At 1:10 of the video you can actually see their faces collide. I am pretty sure it was Wiz’s helmet/visor that knocked out Seabrook and not an elbow to the head.

If you call Wisniewski’s hit an intent to injure, the same could be called for Seabrook’s hit on Perry. I don’t believe that Seabrook was selling anything, I believe that Wisniewski was trying to protect the important player on his team. If you watch your own teammate get hit from behind like that, it looks good to step up and make the opponent pay. Unfortunately, Wiz’s hit was in the head and I cannot deny that it was dangerous. Things like this happen in hockey and Seabrook’s hit on Perry could have easily done the same damage. The hit was from behind AFTER Perry has lost the puck and gone in the opposite direction as the puck. He had turned his back to Seabrook, Seabrook then hit him near the head toward the boards. In my opinion, Wiz should get a minor suspension to show other players that they need to be more careful. There is no need to call this a “cheap shot” or a “gutless” play.
For those who say that the Hayward is unprofessional, in his words he never said “he is/was selling it.” He specifically said “there he looks hurt,” and only questioned the idea about selling the penalty. Unfortunately, people have been caught many times trying to sell a penalty and it’s not unusual for anyone to question it. Apparently, we find out that Seabrook was not selling it, but at the moment it could have been a possibility.

How is anyone surprised? This is the DUCKS we’re talking about. This is the Western Conference’s answer to the Flyers. Seabrook likely drew some retribution for taking out Perry, but the headshots have to stop.

It really is hard for me to get upset about these injuries except in the abstract principle of the matter. Brian Campbell and Steve Seabrook are two players I really dislike. If only Steve Ott were among the injured. No, wait. Classless. I can think it, but not say it. I take it back.

Seabrook’s hit on Perry was borderline dirty, Wisniewski’s hit was a payback shot for Seabrook’s and was a definite Charge, but Seabrook Laimbeer’d it quite a bit, too.

Then again, as has been mentioned, these are the Ducks.  Anaheim’s probably one of the few teams in the NHL that is absolutely willing to stab you if you punch them, or shoot you if you stab them.  They have plenty of guys who are more than willing to go the extra mile to extract on-ice vengeance for anything, real or perceived.

Yes, I could see how the Blackhawks would keep their 2nd best defender off the ice for the remainder of the game in hopes of getting James Wisniewski suspended.  I mean, the Ducks and Hawks are in such a tight race, this is sure to make a difference.  Genius move by Seabrook and Quenneville to have number 7 fake it and then take the rest of the night off.

Perry saw Seabrook coming and turned away from that contact.  I’m not saying Seabrook’s hit was completely clean, but if Perry had such a huge problem with it, he’s the kind of guy who would have gone after Seabrook himself.

To say that Seabrook was selling the hit or faking is ludicrous.  He was KO’d on his feet and fell to the ice accordingly.  It’s hard to see with skates, but I bet his toes were pointed too.  Punch someone in the jaw like that really hard, and that’s how they will fall when KO’s standing up.

Do we need to threaten to make NHL hockey illegal, like cockfighting and dogfighting, in order to knock some sense into people’s heads about why this kind of hit should earn a suspension?

Probably so.
The league is run, and played, by idiots.
Only the NHL could shoot itself in the foot (or check itself to the brain) after coming out of such an awesome Olympic tournament.

The PA and league should both be taken to task for allowing the game to turn into what it is. It’s never been more dangerous to play hockey - especially in the NHL.

What are the 5 players on the competition committee waiting for? All they have to do is sign off on the head-hits rule and it goes in place immediately. It will save careers and maybe even a life.

And the NHL needs a kick in the pants too. How about it grows a pair and actually hand out a stiff penalty for these kinds of transgressions. 20 games to Wiznewski is a good start. Then again, Downie’s suspension didn’t do anything to stop the insanity that plagues the NHL these days.

I love my hockey rough and tumble. But there’s a clear difference between rough and dangerous.

As expected, Hawk fan reaction so far in other places has been one of trying to defend Seabrook’s hit as clean.

Funny how much a fuss they made over Ovechkin’s hit, but when Seabrook is the one making that hit, it suddenly is absolutely fine.

Wisniewski will probably get hit hard.  He’s not a marquee player after all…  I bet Seabrook gets nothing.  Because he *is* a marquee player for a team the league desperately wants to win this season…

The hit by Seabrook on Perry looked okay to me, and it looked more dramatic than it was due to Perry’s movement. Perhaps not entirely textbook, but hardly a vicious assault. Wisniewski’s retaliation on the contrary is as moronic as they come, which should result in a lengthy suspension if justice is to be served.

NHL’s current version of toughness is staged fighting, blindside hits, fighting after clean hits, and targeting unsuspecting players as retalition. North American (or probably Neanderthal Canadian) hockey at its finest. No one takes responsibility for anything and talk endlessly on about keeping the game physical. Who gives a toss about respect and fairness as long as there’s body contact and the exciting promise of injury. Let’s keep appealing to the lowest denominator, because we don’t want to lose the most simpleminded part of the hockey audience.

No wonder the Olympics are out of favour. It illuminates all the shortcomings of the league product in full HD. I’m just tired of celebrating stupidity in hockey.

Wiz should be suspended at least 5 days. There is nothing there to defend him against charges that there was a total intent to injure and nothing else. He clearly telegraphed him across the ice, charged him, went airborne, stuffed his elbows against seabrook’s face and drove him headfirst into the boards. He broke about every rule there is and could be sentenced with 2 game suspensions for at least 2 or 3 of the infractions - taken as a whole, he needs to be made an example of. And likely will be given the recent bad PR the NHL has gotten themselves.

Also, the Ducks are the dirtiest team of the past ten years and their announcers are classless homers who clearly don’t get what HOCKEY is about, they’ve been warped by watching their goons commit cheapshots for the past decade.

You can’t be serious. You do know Seabrook left the game and did not return, don’t you?

If Seabrook was actually hurt, I retract my statement. But that looked like a flop the first time I saw it. And this is the same type of play where Ovechkin hits a guy and then fakes injury to avoid retaliation, so it is understandable to be skeptical.

As for whoever said AO just made a little push, that person has obviously never been on skates. It doesn’t take much to send a guy flying when Campbell was moving at that speed.
