Would A Goalie Actually Play Without A Mask?

from Bob McCown at Fadoo,

In the National Hockey League, can a player go on the ice without a helmet? Of course not, there is a rule which states that all players must wear helmets.

Can a goaltender play without wearing a mask. Don’t be ridiculous! Of course goaltenders must wear…hey, wait a minute! Is it possible that a goalie could actually go “old school” like Johnny Bower and Glenn Hall and start flopping around bare-faced?

You might be surprised to know that there is absolutely nothing in the NHL rule book that says they can’t!

Except for the rule that stops play if the golatender loses his mask. Therefore the ref would have to blow the whistle immediatley after dropping the puck.

Yeah, but technically, the play stoppage rule only applies to goaltenders who wear a mask. If there is no mask to lose, the rule wouldn’t apply. Not that I don’t think this whole article is dumb, since there’s no way the league would allow a goaltender to play without a mask. It’s like those people who like to cite old laws that no one follows but are technically on the books, like no chewing gum while wearing sandals on a Sunday in Cade County, Illinois, or whatever.
