Wrong Call On Ohlund

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

But we care not what Koivu did. You want to suspend Koivu for the elbow? Go ahead. Of course, it’s a moot point given that he has a broken leg.

Did we mention that? A broken leg. In the mind of NHL czar of discipline Colin Campbell, that equals four games or a paltry 5 percent of the season.

Given that Campbell went all soft on Randy Jones a couple of weeks ago by giving the Philadelphia defenseman just two games for a hit from behind that may have ended Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron’s season, four games seems just about right on the NHL’s sliding scale of mayhem.

that is why they need to have a minimum amount of time for any intent to injure penalties

Yeah right, good thing the NHL takes care of those headshots…err wait.

I dont mind the Ohlund suspension, he acted stupid and now he has to live with the suspension. However, i dont get why those intentional elbows by Gaborik and Koivu apperantly are not suspension worthy. Kesler and Ohlund got lucky they dont have a concussion.

What we learn from it, headshots are ok as long as the other player doesnt get injured.

Given that I read that he’ll miss a week with this injury, how is that so grave? I wouldn’t mind Ohlund suspended for more games, but the words “broken leg” do not magically mean he’s crippled.

what a whiner fest.
everyone is crying rivers now for suspensions over any little thing. “yeah this… but what about THAT! Wah wah wah”

take hitting COMPLETELY out of hockey then so its all finesse, scoring and power plays. basketball on ice so ESPN can eat it up again for 2 years and realize its never going to catch on with mainstream “sports fans”

just end the whining already

Gaboriks elbow to Keslers head was about as bad as Ive seen this season, and not a mention of a suspension, yet Koivu elbows Ohlund and he takes a slash to his brittle little leg, and now he gets suspended for 4 games, with an appatent cracked bone… I have yet to see the Wild say that he has a broken leg…
Gaborik’s head shot should have been a suspension, it was as clear as clear can be intent to injure.

Unless the NHL stops taking into account the severity of injuries which result from altercations, regardless of who started it or how it was started, the Ohlunds of the world will almost always be the ones suspended or fined.

The NHL seems to believe that as long as it addresses one of the intent-to-injure plays in a game where more than one such infraction takes place, it’s done the right thing, and that’s not necessarily true.
