Wrong Decision By Ron Wilson

from Bruce Garrioch of Off The Posts,

This guy really is something. This great man.

He has no clue that there’s something called selling the game of hockey.

How does he not play Martin Gerber tonight?

What is Wilson afraid of? Is Wilson afraid Gerber is going to get nailed by the Senators?

This is just ridiculous. Actually, it’s a joke. Wilson claims to not care about the media and then says he thinks the media in Ottawa is looking for mock Gerber.

a bit more...

I have never understood the hate the Ottawa media has for Gerber.  Been nothing but a Pro during his time on Ottawa, and lets be honest, he was NOT the problem there.

I think not playing him is the better choice, from a Leafs standpoint - to avoid the hoopla from the Ottawa media.

Either way, if the Sens don’t win tonight it will be a surprise…

I have stood by Gerber through thick and thin, but I too would like to see him play tonight. Let him exorcise any demons he has, let him show the Senators just how well he knew them; no goalie in the League knows the Sens as well as he (he even knows Comrie from his last stint with Ottawa).

The only piece of Toronto in his equipment bag is the jersey; he’s still Ottawa on every other piece. He was a class act through all the harsh times and realities. He deserves to play, and win or lose, he deserves the fans’ respect. This morning, the Sun had a poll, and around 9am around 85% of respondents felt he should be cheered, rather than booed, when he came.

Let him play.

While I’m not a fan of Ron Wilson, take anything Bruce Garrioch says about Ron Wilson with a grain of salt.  Garrioch hates Wilson and never passes up an opportunity to rip him.

Good comment. Agree entirely.

It’s too bad, as I would have watched the game if Gerber was playing. Now—not so much.

Hey, maybe Cujo will get shelled and Gerber can ride dramatically to the rescue for his new team while stuffing it up the arse of his old one.

Why? Is Wilson insufficiently deferential to the press or something?

Garrioch is a loudmouth, like most columnists these days… Random soundbites like this that he knows are going to be controversial is the only way to ensure that he remains a talking point.  Buffoonery aside, it doesn’t validate Gerber’s performance the past couple of years, though (nor mean that Wilson isn’t playing Gerber for anything but the obvious reasons).  As much as I wanted to see Gerbs succeed, he was ridiculously soft. Slow movement in the crease, poor at smothering the puck, and a penchant for letting in both very early and very late goals. And yeah, I don’t think he has the psychological makeup to deal with an aggressive press contingent.

Regardless, I wish Gerbs the best wherever his career takes him, something I definitely don’t wish Garrioch.
