Yankee Stadium Still In The Winter Classic Picture

from John Dellapina of the NY Daily News,
With desperation setting in, the three parties who must work out the complex logistics associated with the event - the NHL, the Yankees and the Mayor’s Office - plan to sit down next week for a Stadium hockey summit.
“This is not dead yet,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Daily News yesterday.
Although reports yesterday stated that the NHL will play its 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field - with the Detroit Red Wings visiting the Blackhawks - the preferred option is to have the Rangers play host to the Boston Bruins in what would be the final sporting event at the current Yankee Stadium.
“The only two options at this point are Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field,” Daly said. “Wrigley Field is not done.”

For once, accept that the entire middle of the country isn’t just “flyover states” and do something that doesn’t cater just to the East Coast.
Detroit - Chicago would be a better game than Rangers - Boston because of the styles of the two teams. The atmosphere in Wrigley would be incredible - and there would be a greater chance of a January blizzard in Chicago than in New York!

And for a league that whines incessantly about how much money it’s losing, spending all those extra millions to winterize the stadium for one even seems like an extravagance.
The state of New York had the outdoor game last year - they will have others in the future. Give Chicago a chance to show off their young stars for a change, since they actually have a hockey team worth watching for the first time in years.

I’m all for another outdoor game, but I don’t understand the use of baseball stadiums to host them. The geometries are wrong for the rink (some fans will be much farther away than others) and the capacities are far below those of football fields.
Why not have Wings VS Hawks at Soldier Field? The tickets sales would be higher, the rink setup would be easier and they wouldn’t risk causing PR conflicts with conservative baseball fans who don’t want to see their hallowed halls (Yankee Stadium and Wrigley being way up there with Fenway) sullied by other sports.

As someone who has been to Yankee Stadium I can say it would work there. Haven’t been to Wrigley so I can’t comment. Yankee Stadium is also bigger and will be torn down next year. Wrigley isn’t going anywhere. That can be next year’s game. Personally, I think the Meadowlands would be better than Yankee Stadium actually....I’ve also seen enough of the Red Wings on the big stage while the Blackhawks should actually make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years before they start getting swelled heads.

if they are going to do this every year do it right.
they should have a double header playing at a neutral site that will be good for these conditions to hold the game.
Rangers vs Bruins.....Jan 1 2009...I’m there! Get it done!
seriously, outside of boston, who really cares for bruins? you cant sell that team tv audience. atleast flyers have well known checker past and it’s a bigger tv market.
it should be a rivalry teams involved, like flyers vs rangers.
as for the game at wrigley field. are the boards going to covered in ivy? (it should be played at soilder field)

Considering Dellapina’s the same “journalist” who reported Sean Avery’s clinical death (and strongly suggested a coverup on the team’s part when Avery was confirmed to be not dead), I’m taking his reporting about as seriously as that of Weekly World News.
