You Make The Call

Wings had a goal disallowed last night because a Wings player (Dan Cleary) was in the crease and as the ref said, “The Wing player was in the crease and the goaltender could not do his job.”

Worst call I’ve seen this season…

Buffalo Sabres fans want to know when in the last 10 years the rules changed again.

Bull-Shit call. The Wings have been getting dicked over pretty good this year on calls like this. They all have come on goals that could have been momentum changers
That was one of two goals called back on the Wings last night.

when things happen against the wings, this is the typical response. but it was the grey area in the playoffs that Wings swore by when Zetterberg covered the puck twice in the crease in consecutive games…
probably should have been a goal, but live by the sword, die by the sword.

Wow. What the hell? Didn’t this rule get “changed” 10 years ago? Goals like this have been scored against everyone from Brodeur to Lehtonen to Legace and back again countless times, and this one time is when this penalty gets called?
Look, NHL. It’s high time you folks up there in Toronto do something about the officiating in this league. The officials will not change their ways unless you start firing warning shots (and officials). This sort of thing is absurd.

The second worst call, have you seen the Brad May no call? Horrible.

Every team at some point has an instance of a goal counting that shouldn’t, but this no-goal call combined with the Brady May one this year, and we are only 1/4 into the season, is just cause for Wings fans to be upset with the standard of officiating. And this “typical response” would come from a fan of any team that got screwed. If not, then you obviously don’t care enough about your team and are just a casual, cheer for your team when they are winning fans (ie - most of the Penguins faithful).

This is ridiculous. Its these arbitrary, horrible calls that have been responsible for how inconsistent and underacheiving the wings have been thus far this season.

The deciding factor for me is that Kiprusoff has no reaction to the goal being scored. If he thought there had been interference, he would have had an instant reaction. There was none.
Kiprusoff does something that a lot of goalies seem to do against the Wings (especially against Homer). He moves out to the very edge of the crease and tries to make contact with the guy in front. That way, if he stops the puck, great. If he doesn’t, he can claim he was interfered with. Pretty crafty tactic. Crappy for the Wings, but crafty nonetheless.

The worst thing about all of these - and yes, they do happen to every team, but that doesn’t make it better - is that each person who just ACCEPTS this level of officiating as “just the way it is” implies that they feel the NHL is not CAPABLE of anything better. Only a third-rate league - at best - would tolerate such hideously bad and inconsistent officiating and shrug it off, claiming that it’s the best they can do. Other sports - that is, truly professional sports - see if an aspect of the game is damaging their product and their credibility, and act to change it. The NHL talks incessantly about how well they are doing - they are a multi-billion-dollar business that has facilities in two countries and from one North American coast to the other. Stop acting like a god-damn old boy’s club and actually function as a competent business enterprise for a change, morons. (Or at least try to.)
Technology is used widely by fans to watch hockey because that’s the only way they can find the games sometimes; it’s about damn time the league started using technology to improve the consistency and accuracy of it’s on-ice product.
And for a league that claims they want and need more goal-scoring, they are pretty damn fast to call goals back.

Kipper wasn’t even really screened by Cleary on this play. He flat out missed it all by himself.
That’s a load of bull jive right there.

Good call. Cleary went in the crease and stayed there.

Then you must have missed the whole LaRue/Cleary-Goal fiasco. Now that was bad.

No, that would be the injuries and their own inconsistent play. This is just another example of the officials mucking up the play. As I sit here typing, I am watching some of the reaction to a disallowed goal in the Islanders/Devils game. It’s happening a lot this season. I just think the the calls against the Red Wings have been a bit more egregious. The explanations given to not justify the call made on the ice. I am pretty sure Kiprusoff was able to do his job there, he just didn’t. I am also pretty sure that his admitted whining to the refs before the game to watch out for interference, had an impact on the play.

Goalies are selling it by going to the top blue area or outside of blue area and selling it. another example how bad this league is run.

he blew similar call before on three different games this year.
Posted by FlyersFan on 11/28/09 at 03:26 PM ET
It was the correct call; if you look closely Cleary’s skate clearly interferes with Kipper’s stick as the shot is coming in which prevents him from making the save. Pretty easy call actually.

Has anyone else signed the petition to fire bettman??

Doesn’t the very definition of a goal mean that the goalie is prevented of doing his job stopping the puck?
Posted by Snatcher from Windsor, ON on 11/28/09 at 04:22 PM ET
hey charlie did you just start watching hockey last night or are you a penguin fan?? figure those would be the most common reason for a bad opinion
Posted by Jimm on 11/28/09 at 04:23 PM ET
Damn jimm, touchy, touchy..did you not look at the replay again? Cleary’s not only in the crease, he also, like I said, interferes with Kipper’s attempt at the save. It’s not really an opinion, just my interpretation of what I saw. No need to personally attack me, just remember to cherish the memories you had of the Red Wings great run they’ve had these past few years; that should take away from the sting of this LIFE-ALTERING no goal call. And no I’m not a Penguins fan…

you must not watch the same nhl i do because in the nhl i have watched all year poeple have been on top of goalies and running the nets but no one else gets called when there is actually deliberate contact. So you think that goal in dallas that was taken from detroit was a good call too. Funny that you never see things like this happen to other teams OVER and OVER again. I dont know if you watched hockey in the past but this is a common theme when detroit even go in the crease its no goal yet we have had 100 of goals against where the goalie was interfere with intentionally. Its not just detroit either. Earlier in the year brodeur had a guy stand on him in the crease and slash him 5 times while trying to cover the puck then shoots it in the net…. Sign the petition to fire bettman or next time it will be your team then you will care.

Buckets stepped on his stick after the puck had gone by both of them. This was a blown call by the ref. It really is as simple as that.
Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids on 11/28/09 at 05:54 PM ET
I dunno, i kind of agree with the refs on this one. Cleary is not supposed to be in the bluepaint and the was no defenseman pushing him there. I don’t think players can just go and setup shop in front of the goalie within the crease.
Had Cleary been a foot and a half further forward it would have been fine but I think you have to let the goalie come out to the top of his crease unimpeded.
It’s a close call but i don’t think its the worst call we’ve seen this year. I think the disallowed Brad May goal against Dallas about a week ago was worse.
