You Should Have Waited Ted

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,
...Hell, Leonsis would have been better as far as his fellow owners were concerned to wait for a team to make an offer to Ovechkin, then match it.
He could then claim he was dragged kicking and screaming into doing such a thing, all the while proclaiming he is delighted to have Alex in the fold. To volunteer this kind of money seems bizarre. And with Ovechkin getting this much money and this much of the cap space, how the hell do you build a team around him?
And if you don’t build a team, how do you bring in fans and stop being a perpetual drain on the other the owners? In short, why are the rich teams putting up with this?

Another Canuck who isn’t happy Ovechkin isn’t playing in a “real hockey town” like Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver. Seems like the 30% increase in attendance since Ovechkin signed his deal might be a sign that Uncle Ted did the right thing, huh?

This analysis is so wrong. In a couple of years, much less a few, much less a dozen, OV’s contract will look like the best deal in sports. When Sid the Kid’s contract ends he will be at the height of his career and worth $15 mil or more. OV at 9 or 10 million in six years from now will be a bargain.

What kind of logic is this? On one hand he is saying that Leonsis should have waited for AO to sign an offer from another team and match it, and on the other he says that AO is taking up too much cap space for Washington to build a team around him.
Does he really think that any team sending an offer to Ovechkin would offer anything less than the league max for a long period of time? If Leonsis is forced to match a contract for 10.8 million a year for the next, say 5 or 6 years, how is that saving any cap space?
Leonsis made a smart move, effectively saving himself over a million a year in cap space. Mr. Gallagher should probably think a little bit before he write such superficial analysis.
