Your 2009-10 SC Champs- The Washington Capitals

from Bill Clement of NBC Sports,
There’s a lot still to play out in free agency, but my early-line pick to win it all is the Capitals. Let’s look at them, and some other teams that should challenge the Penguins for NHL supremacy.
Capitals
The track the Capitals are on is similar to the one taken by the Stanley Cup champion Penguins. Washington, however, is maybe a year behind the Penguins’ progression so next season could be something very special for the Capitals. Washington took a big step last season in learning how to win in the playoffs. That puts the Capitals in terrific position to capture the Stanley Cup next season.

Bingo. Why even bother talking about this right now?

Do all these talking (or typing) heads assume that all sports progressions are inevitably linear in nature just to tick me off? Or are they really not all that grounded in the messiness of reality?

Horrible article. Guy really goes out on a limb there, naming every single legit contender as a serious contender for 2010. The only part where he goes out on a limb is the SC Champ, and that’s entirely nonsensical. Unless of course Clement has some inside info on the Caps plans to bolster their blue line. As long as Budreau’s system is “float OV in the neutral zone and have Green jump every rush for which he’s on the ice” and they don’t play solid defense, the Caps will not win a Cup. The Pens D won the Cup this year, the Wings won it with D last year, Anh with D the year before. It may not be what Bettman and clan loves, but it’s what wins championships.

His good buddies Doc, Eddie O, and Pierre must have forgotten to tell ol’ Cement Head that there was something else going on today.

Uh oh. Has our resident expert seen this?
But even if Hossa lands elsewhere, the Red Wings will still be an elite team.
