Your Daily Bouwmeester Talk

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Local agent Byron Baltimore has talked to Calgary general manager Darryl Sutter twice in the last two days and he is expected to make Bouwmeester an offer before Wednesday’s 10 a.m. MDT opening of the free-agent marketplace. The Flames acquired Bouwmeester’s negotiating rights from the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
If they want to sign Bouwmeester, 25, the youngest and arguably biggest free agent prize out there, the Flames appear to be restricted in how much money they can pay the Edmonton-born defenceman.
That’s because Flames captain Jarome Iginla, one of the top-10 players in the league, took a hometown discount when he signed his latest deal with Calgary for five years at $7 million per year. The optics of paying Bouwmeester more than Iginla would not be good.
So does that put the Flames out of the running for the smooth skating defenceman?
Not necessarily.
