Your NHL ASG Starting Lineup

From an NHL press release today:

If the puck were dropped today, the first shift of the 57th NHL All-Star Game would look a lot like a Montreal Canadiens home game—or a latter-day version of the early All-Star games that pitted the defending Stanley Cup champs (often the Canadiens) against a team of luminaries from the rest of the League.

One major difference: Should current voting trends ultimately prevail, the Canadiens would become the first team in the history of NHL All-Star fan balloting to ice an entire starting lineup when the NHL All-Star Game faces off in Montreal’s Bell Centre Jan 25.

So the current starting lineup is: Alex Kovalev, Saku Koivu, Alex Tanguay, Andrei Markov, Mike Komisarek and Carey Price.

Below is the complete list of Eastern Conference nominees and their current voting numbers:

if this is the starting lineup, im not watching… im all for fan contribution, but this is ridiculous… Montreal fans are essentially taking spots away from more deserving players.. which is unfair…

my starting line up would be as follows:
FORWARDS:
Semin - Crosby - Malkin >> who wouldn’t want to see this line, after all that has gone on between semin and crosby… this would create such a buzz around the game
DEFENSE:
Markov/Chara - Green >> how is gonchar 4th in voting??
GOALIE:
Tim Thomas - another intriguing story that would create a buzz around the NHL. He should be the starter, and the NHL should take advantage of his rags to riches story… someone should do a human interest story on him.

This is crazy, I can’t imagine such a scenario ever playing out in the NBA all-star game. I think it would be better to let people vote on who gets into the All-Star game, and then an independent panel of coaches determines who makes the starting lineup.

The all-Canadiens line-up issue aside, there are other mistakes I see from the current standings. For one, Shea Weber has been an outstanding defensive presence for Nashville this season, but he isn’t even close to making it (assuming only the top 6 players are selected).

If the Habs fan (aka robo-voter) wants to kill the All Star Game once and for all, this is definitely the way to do it. Start that lineup and I’ll be joining the legions of others who won’t waste their time on that farce! And by “farce”, I mean robo-voter’s script that has made Rafalski the #3 D-Man and Ozzie the #2 goalie.

Once again, we have living proof that Lil’ Gary has absolutely no control over this league.

I can’t believe the NHL is going to allow the ballot-stuffing to go through… it’s an obvious mis-use of the system and should be against their Terms of Service.

Just goes to show you what a joke the All-Star Game is… the lineup of nominated voters had some serious head-scratchers to begin with, and they left off deserving players. And now with the voting process, they’re going to lose fans from all over the place (aside from “la belle province”) if they let this travesty proceed.

Bleh. I won’t be watching it this year, even if Luongo makes it in.

Err, I meant nominated players, not voters. Carry on.

how can Gonchar and Whitney get votes.  The Habs thing is bad enough but voting for guys that are not even playing…

A lot of the votes for Gonch and Whitney come from people texting in their votes. When you text in for the Penguins players, it votes for all 5 of the pens players on the list. My question is, why even have them on the ballot? I mean, the NHL knows they are going to be out for a long time and never play the 20 games necessary to be in the ASG, and there are other penguins defenseman that are deserving of at least being on the ballot.

As far as Montreal goes, why is the NHL allowing their votes to count when they can simply look at the votes, see that half the Montreal votes are from the same IP adresses, and not count them? It is a proven fact that the Montreal fans, or at least a couple fans, cheated before there was a captcha by using a script to vote tons of times.  I mean, even if the cheap Montreal votes weren’t counted, the real ones would still probably have all 5 of them in the game, but not starting.

Anyway, there shouldn’t even be fan voting for the ASG because simply speaking, most fans are dumb. I mean, 90% of people are going to just vote for all 5 of the guys from their team, so it just becomes a popularity contest. There are always a lot of people who end up getting left out that deserve to be there. For instance, Simon Gagne has 48,000 votes even though hes having a great season. Jeff Carter, tied for the league lead in goals, 4184 votes. Don’t ask me why i chose 2 flyers players, they are just who came to mind, and there are tons more deserving than who’s on the list.

Its just sad that the best Habs player has 8 goals, 17 points, and they are leading ASG voting.
