Yzerman Ready For A GM Position

from Dana Wakiji at FoxSports Detroit,

Wings general manager Ken Holland addressed that topic among others at a meeting of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association Monday at Hockeytown Cafe in Detroit.

“I think, at some point in time, Steve wants to run his own team,” Holland said. “Certainly, he’s ready. He retired in 2006 and he’s been in our front office four years. He’s run Canada’s World Championship two years. He managed Canada’s Olympic team to gold. He’s ready to go.”...

“At some point in time, the Beatles broke up. Some people are going to go in different directions.”

The Steve Yzerman part of me wants to shake the mans hand and wish him good luck, god knows he deserves all of the success he has earned and will earn.  The Red Wings fan in me just threw up a little in my mouth.

But…he can return after Holland retires with experience and…hopefully…success.  I think it’ll be good for him, we all know he’ll eventually return.

I thought Holland said he was retiring when Lidstrom retired.  Unfortunately I do think Yzerman would have to go somewhere else even if Holland retires soon if he wants to be a GM.  It seems like Jim Nill has been hanging around because he knows he’s next in line.

Really, Paul? You had to throw this our way after that devastating shitshow of a performance on Sunday? That’s just dangerous. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go drink until I can’t feel feelings anymore.

Seriously, Detroit has Holland, Nill, and Yzerman in their front office, so they have three competent (assuming Yzerman really is ready to run a team on his own) GMs in one organization. Some teams don’t even have ONE competent GM in their front office, so the Red Wings have been very lucky.

In Yzerman’s favor is the fact that he is young, likes where he is, and has a position as long as he wants it. He has no desperate need for another job, so he can pick and choose. If he were desperate for a job then he’d jump at anything no matter how much of a circus the organization was. Since he can bide his time, he can wait until a position opens up where he will have a stable ownership, relatively non-dysfunctional management, some quality players, a minor-league system that is capable of drafting and developing good youngsters, and a place where he and his family will be happy.

He can wait until a spot is open where he will have an opportunity to succeed as a GM instead of having to fight against high odds of failure. It’s a tough enough job to do well in as it is; no need for him to try to succeed with additional obstacles.

He probably will leave to get the opportunity to run his own team but it won’t be right away. And I’ll be sad to see him leave, but excited to see him get such an opportunity and hopeful that he will do very very well.

That’s what I’m thinking, too, and I’d like to see him there as well.

As everyone knows, Yzerman grew up in Nepean, (an Ottawa subrub) and played Junior A for the Nepean Raiders and Major Junior for the Peterborough Petes.

Is he really in any hurry to leave.  Don’t forget leaving would also mean moving his family and he has young children in school so that will play a role in his decision making.

I don’t see him in any rush to leave the team as he is happy in the position he is in, plus it allows him to be involved in team Canada opportunties as well.

It would be tough seeing him with another organization if/when he goes, lets just hope he isn’t like Bowman and jumps to one of our closests rivals (unless he plans to sabatoge from within)
