New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has exercised its right to walk away from the arbitrator’s award to Nikolai Zherdev, thereby allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.
“With the additions we’ve been able to make this summer, we feel we’ve been able to add scoring and offense from the wing position,” stated Sather. “Following the arbitration process and subsequent award given, we feel it is in our best interest to walk away and continue to explore all available options to improve our roster.”

haha, no. I actually think he’ll be staying in North America. I think Zherdev still thinks he can be an NHL star, and I think he probably could be. He’s already shown he doesn’t want to play pointless games for a bad team (Sorry BJ’s) but he also wants to be paid. Montreal could give him important games, a top 6 position, and a 3+ million salary.

Why would Montreal sign a player who takes shifts and nights off, when they just let go a player who takes shifts and nights off?

Because Gainey’s an idiot? Anyway, its just a guess. Honestly, he could end playing for no one, and I wouldn’t really care. I’m just sitting around bored waiting to leave for my tee time.

Didn’t Montreal just get rid of a russian who’s very talented but comes to play maybe 3 out of 5 games at best ?

No cap space in Montreal. I hope the Leafs get him (snicker)!

One player that really actually should just go back to Russia, right here…

Montreal? Why not...they’re already half way on their way to becoming the Montreal Rangers.
Gomez, Mara & now Zherdev

Lang is not Russian.
This is probably the best move the rangers have made in the past 2 years. I like Zherdev a lot but no way is he worth that amount of money.
Does the team that signs him have to pay him the amount he was awarded, or can they negotiate a new amount?

Any amount. He’s now a UFA and can sign with anyone, same as any other UFA.

(And the comment about Lang was in respect to taking shifts off from time to time, as Kovalev was wont to do, not in being Russian as Kovalev and Zherdev are.)

I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that he lands in Montreal.
