From Mike Knobler at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Veteran defenseman Alexei Zhitnik remains in the Thrashers’ plans after a season in which he played only 65 games though he was paid $3.5 million.
Thrashers general manager Don Waddell rejected speculation the team might buy out the final year of Zhitnik’s contract.
“That’s never been talked about,” Waddell said. “We think he’ll be a big part of our future. We expect him to come back and be part of our team.”

If he’s part of ATL’s plans this next season, then they’ve already failed this next season….

How else do you expect Waddell to offload him? It’s either buy him out, waive him, or trade him. Governors meetings this week along with the draft, so this might be an opportunity for Waddell to shop him around.
The bigger question is: What GM would be stupid enough to pick up Zhitnik after the terrible play last season? I think you’d be hard pressed to find a GM anywhere in the world that would take him.
I’m expecting a buyout before the 30 June. And if not, he’ll probably be one of the first players this coming season to hit the waiver wire.
Zhitnik is a $3.5M pylon.
