Some local hockey fans were holding their breath because of the unstable situation of the Pittsburgh Penguins, while others were doing so to get a hearty workout.
Every Tuesday night, some extreme hockey fans gather at the Pine-Richland pool to partake in a friendly, yet exhilarating game of underwater hockey.
The premise of the game is much like its on ice counterpart. Teams of three to six players try to hit a puck made of brass and teflon across the bottom of the deep end (12 feet) of the pool into one of the two of the 1.5 foot goals on either end of the deep part. The goals are made of weighted angle iron, but sometimes get jostled around during the action according to long-time player Deb Rammage.

NEW YORK—The National Hockey League’s exciting countdown to the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues tonight with 13 games featuring 16 of the 20 playoff-eligible clubs. Among the honors still to be determined with just six days remaining in the regular season: all six division titles, both conference titles, the Presidents’ Trophy as the League’s top regular-season club, all 16 playoff seeds and four playoff berths.
Six clubs could clinch division titles and/or playoff berths tonight:

Buffalo can clinch the Northeast Division and Eastern Conference tonight:
* If they beat Pittsburgh.

NY Rangers can clinch an Eastern Conference playoff berth tonight:
* If they beat the Islanders
or
* They get one point and Carolina gets one or no points against Tampa Bay and Toronto gets no points against Philadelphia.

If misery loves company, Turco runs with a fast crowd. With the playoffs starting next week, several elite players are at a juncture at which another inconsequential postseason might define their careers. Those on the hot seat are hardly ingenues. They are old enough (in their late 20s or 30s), playoff-tested enough and significant enough that they should be able to carry a team for a week, a series, maybe even two months. “Expectations are so high,” Turco says, referring to himself and the other top players under scrutiny, “but obviously there’s a reason people expect a lot.”

The albums do not hint at Rick’s battles with mental illness, battles that have tested the family’s mettle and helped define the paths each family member has and will follow.
The images, static and one-dimensional, certainly cannot begin to suggest how one set of circumstances might have led to the other, and how they might continue to coexist long into the future.
“He’s probably been the best he’s been now,” Kyle Wellwood said of his father in a recent interview. “There were always times when he’d be doing good and he’d have a relapse or something would happen. The bad times are rare and don’t last too long, a couple of days.”

All Eyes On The East

Tuesday could be a crucial day in determining the playoff picture as all six teams chasing a post-season berth are in action.
All eyes will be on Montreal (home to the Boston Bruins) and Toronto (hosting the Philadelphia Flyers) to see who, if anyone, blinks first in the ultimate high-stakes game of chicken.
Also on Tuesday, the Rangers and Islanders clash in Long Island while the Hurricanes pay a visit to the Lightning in Tampa Bay.

A judge ruled the four-ton ice rink-grooming machines aren’t motor vehicles because they aren’t useable on highways and can’t carry passengers.

Avs/Flames Meet Up

“This is the game we’ve been waiting for all year,” said Tony Amonte yesterday after a spirited practice full of laughs.
“It’s nice to hold your own destiny in your hand.”
Since the foes last met in mid-March, the Avalanche have gone 6-0-1 to keep the pressure on the eighth seed.
The Flames have strung together six straight wins to go 6-2 in response.
Although this will be their first head-to-head battle in three weeks, it seems their names have been linked the entire time.
“We haven’t been playing against them a lot but it feels like we’ve been playing against them, fighting to get in playoff position,” said Amonte.

Sources tell TSN that Team Canada will announce its coaching staff today for the upcoming World Hockey Championship in Russia.
St Louis Blues coach Andy Murray has accepted the position of head coach and will be joined on Canada’s bench by Los Angeles Kings associate coach Mike Johnston and former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Gerard Gallant.

Shoot The Puck Todd

Detroit Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi, with his size and strength, will create space for his new linemates, Robert Lang and Kyle Calder. He can also generate scoring opportunities with his soft-touch passes.
But, coach Mike Babcock doesn’t want Bertuzzi to be too unselfish.
“Bert likes to pass the puck,’’ Babcock said. “Forget that. Langer will pass the puck, you (Bertuzzi) shoot the puck and take it to the net and Calder will be there.’’
