Canucks Could Have Used Asham

via Mike Halford & Jason Brough of the Vancouver Province,

- The Pittsburgh Penguins signed winger Arron Asham to a one-year, $700,000-US deal on Friday. Pretty good bargain for a tough guy who scored four goals in 23 playoff games for the Flyers last spring. Asham would’ve been a fine fit for the Canucks, who could really use some ferocity on the forecheck, but evidently he wanted to stay in the East.

- Memo to Mike Gillis: Mikael Samuelsson led all Canucks forwards in hits last postseason, which isn’t ideal if you hope to intimidate your opponent. Steve Bernier was second, and his checks can punish, but he’s gone now. After that, it went Alex Burrows, Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen, in that order. Are you shaking in your skates, NHL defence-men? Yeah, didn’t think so. Tanner Glass (7 hits in 4 games) and Rick Rypien (9 hits in 7 games) combined for just five more hits than Kyle Wellwood (11 hits in 12 games) during the playoffs. To be fair, Glass and Rypien barely saw the ice in the postseason. Though they both saw more than Darcy Hordichuk, who didn’t play at all and will earn slightly more than Asham this season.

- On the bright side: Victor Oreskovich, the big winger the Canucks acquired from the Panthers this summer, finished sixth on Florida last season with 99 hits, and he only played 50 games with limited ice time. Then again: Oreskovich finished last on the Panthers with a minus-8 rating.

Asham Has Eyes On The Cup In Philly

“I’m there to win a cup — that’s the most important thing on my mind,” said Asham. “Last year with the Devils, we came up short in the first round and that’s definitely disappointing, but this is a new start and I think we have the guts to do it.”

“I think it’s going to be good, I think Philly definitely fits my game. They’re a rough-tough hockey team. I’m definitely going there excited. They had a great run last year in the playoffs and my goal right now is to win a Stanley Cup before my career is over, and I’m running out of years. I think Philly is my best chance.”
