Aaron Downey Trying To Get Kids On The Ice

from Chris Halliday of The Orangeville Banner,
Known inside certain National Hockey League (NHL) circles as Aaron ‘one punch and he’s Downey’, the Honeywood native is doing anything but knocking kids off their skates.
In fact, Downey, his brother Trevor Downey and friend Shawn Kilshaw of Montreal are trying to place as many youth into Canada’s minor hockey system as possible. Three years ago, the group founded the House9 Hockey Foundation, a charity which aims to help underprivileged youth pay for minor hockey registration fees and equipment.
“Hockey is an expensive sport and what a privilege it is to play. But many don’t have the opportunity,” Aaron said. “We’ve always wanted to do something, a way to put kids into hockey and House9 is what we came up with.”

via the Grand Rapids Press,
Grand Rapids Griffins forwards Ville Leino and Aaron Downey were recalled by the parent club Detroit Red Wings on Thursday morning.
The Red Wings were able to create salary cap space by placing defenseman Brad Stuart (ribs) on long-term injured reserve.

from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press,
Forward Aaron Downey will sign a two-way contract to remain with the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.
AdvertisementThe NHL Players Association web site no longer lists Downey as unsigned. The web site lists Downey as a Wing with compensation of $575,000 for the 2008-08 season.
I spoke to Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill shortly before noon and he said “we’re very close” to signing Downey to a one-year, two-way contract.

Could Aaron Downey Make The Wings
by Paul on 09/15/07 at 03:46 PM ET

fromm Red Wings Corner,
Babcock has been bringing an edge to the Red Wings, wanting to make his team more difficult to play against. That means better defense, tighter checking and more hitting. It’s also difficult to play against a team with an enforcer.
Bringing in a fighter—and one like Downey, who probably won’t cost much more than $500,000—wouldn’t make the Red Wings a tough team, but it would push them slightly towards mediocre on the toughness scale.
Downey’s play in camp has been adequate. On Saturday, he was irritable (challenging Tomas Kopecky after one whistle and Brad Ference after another) and that’s what the Red Wings want.
Downey’s roster competition comes from his training camp linemate, Russian Igor Grigorenko, who won’t fight, but is supposed to be able to put the puck in the net. The problem is Grigorenko hasn’t shown offensive flash in training camp.
