Aaron Ward Has Connections At U of M

from Mary Caton of the Windsor Star,

Located near the player’s entrance, the party swells to as many as 60 at times and they’ve enjoyed drop-in visits from members of the Detroit Tigers’ baseball team, golfer Jack Nicklaus and numerous U of M alumni.

Persichilli gives full credit for their strategic locale to fellow U of M grad and Wind-sor native, Aaron Ward.

An NHL veteran now playing for the Carolina Hurricanes, Ward is Erica’s cousin.

While hockey doesn’t allow Ward to particpate in many pigskin parties at the moment, he plans to grill hot dogs and sausages right alongside Persichilli when he retires.

“He’s the one who got us to the location we’re at now,” Persichilli said. “We owe it to him.”

“With this trade, our defense really takes shape,” said Rutherford. “Aaron played very well during his time in Carolina and had maintained that consistency with New York and Boston. We envision him complementing Joni Pitkanen well as a defensive pairing.”

The Stories Of Aaron Ward

from James Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen,

...you talk to Aaron Ward because, unlike most of the players in this league, Ward actually talks. And he does so without spewing a single cliché or ducking a question, which is a rather religious experience in this column business.

And when a player has three Stanley Cup rings, has been to five finals, was almost destroyed by Scotty Bowman, and once nearly scrapped with teammate Jaromir Jagr on the bench, there is plenty to talk about....

“One night in Chicago, I blocked a shot with my mouth and from the lip to the nose, I was gushing blood everywhere. As I headed to the room, Scotty yelled ‘If you’re not back in five, you don’t play another shift.’ Our doctor was about 80, so I knew there wasn’t a chance that the stitches were going in that fast!” Another night in Colorado, Forsberg and Sakic stepped on the ice, and Detroit assistant Dave Lewis sent Ward and his partner out.

“Scotty came running down the bench, yelling ‘Jesus Dave are you trying to make us lose the game!?!’ I was halfway across the ice, but I could hear it so clearly, I decided to save my career so I did a 180 and went back to the bench.” Ward would leave Detroit with two rings—and zero fear.

All Aaron Ward

Aaron Ward chatted with fans today at the Bruins website…

Hailey_Dodge: what is the most difficult part of the playoffs?
Aaron Ward: Maintaining your focus. SO MANY distractions… media, friends and family looking for tix, euphoria in the city…

beproud42: How do you respond to everyone who feels that this is going to be a (fairly) easy sweep for the Habs?
Aaron Ward: Games are played on the ice, not in the newspapers, on TV, or on computer screens.  Playoffs have a different flavor.

Ward Out With Bad Foot

from the Bruins Blog at the Boston Globe,

Bruins top four defenseman Aaron Ward showed up on crutches for today’s morning skate on Causeway Street, which meant he wasn’t skating, and which also meant he won’t be in uniform tonight when the Bruins face the Panthers at the Garden.

Initial indication: a deep bruise, possibly on the bone. But it could be worse.

The Bruins are awaiting results of X-rays taken at Mass. General this morning.

Ward Suffers Throat Injury

from the CP via TSN,

(Aaron) Ward was not bleeding when he left the ice and did not leave on a stretcher, but coach Claude Julien said following Boston’s 2-1 win that Ward coughed up some blood before leaving the ice.

The 35-year-old Ward was skating toward Penguins defenceman Sergei Gonchar near the end boards when Gonchar got either his forearm or his stick up and accidentally struck Ward in the neck.

‘’I got there and he was making a choking sound, holding his throat and gasping for air,’’ teammate Zdeno Chara said.

Morning Line

from the Boston Herald, Aaron Ward talking about the Bruins 3-1 loss to the Wings on Saturday,

“We should have won,” said defenseman Aaron Ward. “No one asked me, ‘Do you think you guys should have won this game?’ But, yeah, we should have. And that’s a big positive to come out of a game with.

“There’s not a guy in this locker room who doesn’t believe we should have won the game. Not to diminish what (the Red Wings) accomplished, but we should have won, plain and simple. And that is a good sign.”

Line Of The Day

via the Boston Globe,

Aaron Ward, who missed his first game last night after suffering a concussion against Montreal, has passed two of the tests that are required for players who have sustained head injuries, and believes he can play on Thursday against Toronto.

Despite his recovery, Ward’s still not happy that defenseman Francis Bouillon, who delivered the hit, was not disciplined.

“In my past dealings with the National Hockey League, I’ve learned to set my expectations low. They met them,” said Ward. “It was a cheap hit. I’ve seen the video. The puck is 140 feet away. It’s not even in the zone. It’s inexplicable. But I’ll deal with it and move on.”

Bruins Starting Okay

From Fluto Shinzawa at the Boston Globe,

Aaron Ward, more than most of his teammates, has been steamed ever since the preseason by the league-wide crystal-ballers who have pegged the Bruins for yet another rotten season.

“Most people,” said Ward about the season-opening five-game swing, “would have predicted that we’d be lucky to get 2 [points].”

Instead, the Bruins finally flew east - they had been on the road for 10 days - late Saturday night as owners of 6 hard-won points, probably more than any Black-and-Gold homer would have predicted for the West Coast trip.

“We’re struggling for attention in the city of Boston,” said Ward. “We’re kind of the redheaded stepchild out of the four teams.”

Aaron Ward Not Too Happy

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

Another day, another story on The Hockey News’ pre-season predictions – and the fury they generate in some people and players.

This time, it’s Boston defenseman Aaron Ward whose UnderArmor is in a twist. Apparently, he’s none too pleased we picked the Bruins to finish last in the Eastern Conference this season.

“There’s a reason why (those writers) are not putting skates on,” said Ward, employing the incomparably lame “Youse-guys-ain’t-NHLers-and-therefore-can’t-comment-on-nuthin’ ” argument. “And if (writers) really knew what they were doing, they wouldn’t be writing in Toronto or Montreal or New York. They’d be in Vegas, putting their money where their mouth is.”

Proteau responds and a bit on Ozolinsh too…
