Foote Out Indefinitely With Tricep Injury
by Paul on 01/05/09 at 02:46 PM ET

via Craig Stancher at ColoradoAvalance.com,
The Avalanche will be without a pair of veterans when the club faces Nashville tomorrow, as defenseman Adam Foote and forward Ian Laperriere will not make the trip to Tennessee.
Foote suffered a tricep injury during Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Wild. The blueliner played briefly in the second period before leaving the game. He did not take part in practice Monday and is out indefinitely.
The Avalanche also played the third period of last night’s game without the services of Laperriere. The winger, who has been playing center of late, skated for just 9:03 before leaving the contest with a back injury.
“Adam has a tricep injury and he’s going to be reevaluated in the next few days,” said Avalanche head coach Tony Granato. “Ian should be day-to-day. He’s got a stiff back but won’t make the trip.”

Sakic & Foote Hurting, Season May Be Over For Avs
by Paul on 11/29/08 at 03:48 PM ET

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
The news isn’t good from the Avalanche’s morning skate: Sakic won’t play tonight against Tampa Bay, and his status is now listed as “indefinite.” We could be in the throes of a sad end to No. 19’s brilliant career. One last “clean” in the weight room - one last clean that he said he wasn’t even going to do, but said he did anyway in a kind of “what the heck?” manner - has hijacked Sakic’s and the Avs’ season....
It’s not a good situation, and this, I believe, will sink this listing Avs team for good this year. This team just doesn’t believe in itself, doesn’t have enough passion and - from what I have witnessed - doesn’t have the close kind of chemistry of the last few teams....
Here’s the other news from the skate: Adam Foote has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 22. Former DU defenseman Aaron MacKenzie has been recalled from Lake Erie and will be available tonight (although probably won’t be in the lineup).
Foote’s upper back (neck) is still bothering him, and this mysterious knee injury has also crept into the situation. Injuries like these are what can happen when a
stiff, no-talent, cheap-shot artistforward like John Zeiler runs you from behind.

Zeiler Suspended
by Paul on 11/24/08 at 03:52 PM ET

TORONTO (November 24, 2008) – Los Angeles Kings forward John Zeiler has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of a boarding incident that took place during NHL Game #295, Nov. 22 against the Colorado Avalanche, the National Hockey League announced.
Zeiler was assessed a major penalty for boarding and game misconduct for hitting Colorado defenseman Adam Foote at 6:51 of the second period.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Zeiler will forfeit $8,770.17. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Total Cheap Shot
by Paul on 11/23/08 at 07:31 AM ET

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
Total cheap shot by (John) Zeiler. (Adam) Foote is going to play a puck with Zeiler chasing, and Zeiler throws his right arm and shoves Foote’s head into the boards from behind.
Lappy just challenged Zeiler to drop them and fight, and Zeiler wants no part of it!
(After a few minutes)…They’ve tossed Zeiler from the game, giving him 5 for boarding and a game-misconduct. Probably a smart thing by the referees, although it’s not going to make Lappy happy wanting his pound of flesh in revenge.
Zeiler can definitely count on a suspension by the NHL for this - probably something very severe I bet. The NHL has been taking a lot of heat for the amount of head shots and hits from behind - and now Zeiler lays one of the dirtier hits of this or any other season on Foote.

I come here and act like a child, and I’m going home and I’m telling my kids not to do what I actually did all day — goof around.
“I’m saying, ‘Get in the shower!’ ‘You have to go to bed!’ All I do here is act like they do at home, but that’s what I love about the game. We just act like kids all day long. It’s still fun.”

Just in case you wanted to know what Adam Foote did this summer…
via the Huronia Business Times,
NHL star Adam Foote was a Tottenham Dairy Queen employee on Aug. 7, as part of the company’s annual DQ Miracle Treat Day. All proceeds from the sales of Blizzard treats that day were donated to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Avs Start Contract Talks with Foote, Sauer
by Alanah McGinley on 06/12/08 at 04:59 PM ET

From Rick Sadowski at the Rocky Mountain News,
The agents for defensemen Adam Foote and Kurt Sauer have had preliminary contract talks with the Avalanche and expect to resume discussions shortly before or during the June 20-21 NHL draft.
Foote and Sauer will be eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1.
In other not-particularly-fascinating-but-still-suggestive Avalanche news, Adrian Dater mentioned (in his Denver Post blog yesterday) that Joe Sakic has recently been spotted in a local gym. He added this note:
That has to be a good sign, right? If I had said “Joe Sakic has been seen at the all-you-can-eat Pizza Hut lunch buffet for five days straight”, that wouldn’t be such a good thing, right?

Two Different Styles

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated,
The personalities in this odd coupling could not be more different. Zetterberg, 27, has his own website, complete with his own merchandising line—henrikzetterberg.com is promoted on the Joe Louis Arena scoreboard during the second intermission—while Foote is old school enough to assume MySpace is the area between the face-off dot and the front of his own net. Zetterberg has a Google-able girlfriend, Emma Andersson, who is a pop singer/model/TV host/winner of the Swedish version of Survivor, while Foote has a wife, Jennifer, and two sons. Zetterberg has a GQ face, now adorned by a russet-tinted playoff beard, while Foote’s mogul course of a nose and lived-in features look like something out of a 19th-century daguerreotype.

from the National Post,
Prior to Game 3 in Colorado, the 36-year-old spoke to the Post about the Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry, the lack of original nicknames in the NHL, and possibly replacing Mark Messier as the new spokesman for Lays potato chips.
National Post Is it different playing in Joe Louis Arena as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets than as a Colorado Avalanche?
Adam Foote Yeah. [The Jackets] just didn’t have the history that [the Avalanche] had. That’s probably why. It seemed that both teams approached it the same way. [The Detroit-Colorado rivalry] was fun, it was exciting, it was intense. It was as close as you’re going to get to things like that without getting in trouble by the law. There was some pretty nasty stuff going on. It was a very intense series.

Foote Would Have Stayed In Columbus
by Paul on 03/04/08 at 06:36 AM ET

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Teams make hard financial decisions all the time. I would never begrudge Howson the right to do that here. If the Jackets don’t want Foote at $4 million a year on a two-year deal, so be it.
Everyone moves on and they all live happily ever after.
But to pick up a newspaper or watch Hockey Night in Canada and read and hear an implication that Foote is a fraud who deviously orchestrated his own exit from Columbus, that he never had any intention of re-signing in Columbus, well, that is, at the very least, offside.
At worst, it’s character assassination.
added 7:37pm, from Rob Oller at the Columbus Dispatch,
Just be thankful Foote’s departure didn’t destroy the team’s playoff chances. Honestly, trading him to the Avalanche actually could help the CBJ’s cause.
If true that Foote threatened to quit on his teammates if the franchise didn’t move him before last Tuesday’s trade deadline, then better to be rid of him than risk poisoning the dressing room with his pessimism. Especially during this period of unparalleled optimism.

More Foote Talk

from Adam Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,
According to numerous NHL sources, Foote threatened to be “a bad teammate, a bad captain and a bad player” the rest of the season if he weren’t re-signed or traded to his preferred destination—the Colorado Avalanche, where his best NHL years were spent.
The Blue Jackets made a final plea, urging Foote to consider all that the Blue Jackets’ ownership group, the coaching staff and the fans had done for him the past three seasons.
Again, according to sources, he responded by saying that he “doesn’t owe anybody anything.”

Played By Foote

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,
Thoughts that have remained dormant for years have worked to the front of my brain this week. Wisps of memory have emerged, unbidden, and they’re telling me that we’ve all been played by Adam Foote, that he is not the leader of men that he purported to be, and not just because he quit the Blue Jackets....
Lesson No. 1: Foote said he put his Dublin house on the market last summer because he wanted to “downsize.” What he didn’t say was he was hunting for a smaller house in the greater Denver area.
Lesson No. 2: Foote professed shock that he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche—yet he rigged the game for just this outcome.

The two sides are working on a two-year contract worth between $3 million and $4 million per season.

After meeting with general manager Scott Howson in recent days, Foote has expressed his desire to sign a contract extension with the Blue Jackets rather than risk being traded at Tuesday’s NHL trade deadline.
“I want to be here,” Foote said. “That’s been made clear to Scotty by both me and my agent (Rick Curran). To my understanding, Scott Howson wants me to be here, too. So there we go.”

fromm Puck-rakers,
Howson confirmed Thursday morning he will be talking to Rick Curran either today or Friday about whether the Blue Jackets can afford to re-sign the team captain. Foote, 36, is an unrestricted free agent and is believed to be seeking a two- or three-year deal.
The general manager said he won’t need to talk to Foote again before discussing money with his agent. The Jackets have seven unrestricted free agents and Foote is the only one management is negotiating with, Howson said.

from Puck-rakers,
“I have no intention of trading Adam Foote if we’re in a playoff race,” Howson said. “But I must do what is best for the franchise.”
What constitutes a “playoff race” in Howson’s eyes? He says there is no magic number of points behind or ahead of the final playoff spot when making such a call. Also, he won’t put a hard date on when to make a decision.
The trading deadline is Feb. 26.
Howson spelled out a four-point criteria he will use in determining whether the Jackets are a contender:

Blue Jackets Need Fans Behind Them

from the Columbus Dispatch,
Some boos might have been intended for NHL officials, but the Blue Jackets thought they were at them Wednesday in Nationwide Arena.
Captain Adam Foote even made a plea to fans after the Blue Jackets came back to beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-4.
“I don’t think they should do that,” Foote said. “This is the first year they’ve had a consistent team, a winning team that’s not getting blown out of games. Maybe they’re frustrated from years past? I don’t know, but I don’t think they should do that.”
