Rangers Get An Offensive Boost

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The Rangers upgraded their offensive capabilities yesterday by signing left wing Alexander Frolov to a one-year, $3 million deal that is not only cap-friendly but should serve as motivation for a player looking to build leverage in the market.

There is nothing negative about the signing of the 28-year-old winger whose personally disappointing 51-point season (19-32) in Los Angeles would have made him the Rangers’ third-leading scorer and whose contract leaves general manager Glen Sather enough cap space with which to maneuver.

The Blueshirts currently have approximately $6.7 million of space under the summer cap with which to sign restricted free agent Marc Staal and perhaps another defenseman.

Rangers Make Frolov Signing Official

from the New York Rangers,

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Alexander Frolov.

Frolov has surpassed the 20-goal plateau in five of his seven NHL campaigns, including two 30-goal seasons in 2006-07 and 2008-09. Frolov, 28, has skated in 536 career regular season contests with the Los Angeles Kings, registering 168 goals and 213 assists for 381 points, along with 210 penalty minutes. He has recorded 24 multi-goal games in his career, including three career hat-tricks.

“Alex is a highly skilled player who we feel will play a key role in improving our offense and play in all situations,” stated Sather.  “He is strong competitor and has the ability to play either wing position.”

Report- Frolov Signing With The Rangers

Thanks to a Jay Gold tweet, I found this translated report from SovSport stating Alexander Frolov is signing with the New York Rangers.

Of course, most of us have dealt with Russian reports before, so let’s wait to see where this goes.

added 6:11pm, via Craig Custance tweet,

Was told Rangers and Alexander Frolov are “in discussions” but deal isn’t done just yet.

added 6:43pm, from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

The New York Rangers are on the verge of signing unrestricted free agent winger Alexander Frolov, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com Monday evening.

The two sides were close to a deal Monday evening with the term of the contract still yet to be agreed upon by the two sides, the source said.

Frolov made $4 million last season and his salary cap hit was $2.9 million.

Frolov May Head To KHL If Not Signed This Week

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

If UFA winger Alexander Frolov doesn’t land with an NHL team this week, don’t be surprised if he ends up going to the KHL, where there’s interest. He’s only 28 years old and is a two-time 30-goal scorer. Sure, he only scored 19 goals last season amid a benching from the Kings, but those 19 goals were scored from a third-line role. If I was an NHL GM needing some offense, I’d be all over this guy.

Frolov Looking For More Money Than The Kings Want To Pay

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Dean Lombardi did an interview this morning with a friend of mine, Dustin Nielson, who does the morning show for 1260-AM in Edmonton. Some of the interview covered some familiar ground, but at one point Lombardi was asked about the future of Alexander Frolov, and whether he saw Frolov returning to the Kings or whether it was time to move on….

He’s a good player. I guess at times, like you say, you think he’s capable of more, but he’s still a productive player. But you still now have to really be astute in how you attach a price tag to that, or you’re going to get yourself in trouble down the road, and then all this building we’ve done makes no sense if we can’t keep these young players that have come through our system. So I’m not too optimistic, given what he’s looking for. The other thing we’re confronting here, don’t forget, is the KHL, and they’re offering an awful lot of money…

Kings Plan To Keep Frolov This Season

Rich Hammond lf LAKings Insider has a Q & A with GM Dean Lombardi,

Question: If, over the next few weeks, it seems unlikely that anything will happen there (Frolov contract), does that influence what you do with him?

LOMBARDI: “No. This is the other thing too, another sign that you’re getting better. Certainly, in the first three years, it was very clear. It was all about getting draft picks. That’s the crappy part about building. You’re essentially making your team worse, immediately, and all you’re doing is getting picks. I don’t see us doing anything like that with a player of his caliber, to say, `OK, we’re going to lose him, so let’s get a second-round pick, or a first-rounder.’ I don’t see us taking good players out of our lineup at this stage.

Moving Frolov Now May Not Make Fiscal Sense

from Spector at Fox Sports,

Sure, Frolov has value given his previous production and the fact that at 27 he’s now considered in his playing prime. That’s not why he’ll be tough to move in the autumn.

Frolov is being paid $4 million for this season, a number which most NHL teams would have trouble swallowing at this time of year. Not only does the return have to make sense for the Kings but the salary numbers have to fit for the club acquiring him.

If the Kings decide to put him on the trade block it’ll likely happen between January 1st and the NHL’s March 3rd trade deadline, excluding the two weeks in February when the league will shut down for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Morning Line

If you want to think along cynical lines—and cynicism is the birthright of every Kings fan—benching Frolov can be seen as a way to reduce his value as he nears the end of his contract and heads toward free agency. Lower production could be support an argument for a lower salary, though a team that starved for goals last season has little to gain by stifling any scoring source.

Frolov After Practice Today

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Question: What were your feelings about being sat out like that? Obviously it’s not a pleasant experience…

FROLOV: “No, obviously not. Nobody likes to be scratched and be in the locker room and see guys play. It’s pretty frustrating. I didn’t have such an experience for a long, long time. I guess, as I said before, it’s the head coach’s decision and you have to respect it.”

Question: He has said that when he talks to you, he doesn’t really get a response from you. Is that accurate? Do you feel like when he asked you questions, you responded appropriately?

FROLOV: “Well, I don’t know. I mean, everyone has different personalities. I don’t know. It’s hard to tell. Maybe, but no matter what happened, it’s not pleasant. You have to move on. I’m back in the lineup and I’m going to do my best and try as hard as I can.”

Frolov Responds To Being A Healthy Scratch

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Question: Did the coaches give you a clear understanding of why you’re not playing tonight?

FROLOV: “Well, it was Terry’s decision. He told me I’m out of the lineup tonight, I guess because I didn’t play well in the last games.’’...

Question: Did you have a reaction to that at all?

FROLOV: “Well, there’s nobody that wants to be scratched, but it was his decision. He’s the head coach and I have to respect it. It doesn’t matter if I agree or disagree with it. It’s just, I have to do my job and work hard and try to do my best.’’

Question: He had said that you didn’t really have a response at all. Is that so? Do you feel comfortable talking to him in those situations?

FROLOV: “I don’t know. It was just his decision for tonight. I think we’re going to talk more later on, tomorrow or later.’’

added 7:00am, from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

“It’s not a player making a physical mistake. It borders on not caring and that’s not tolerable,” Lombardi said by phone Monday.

“And what we’ll do as a team and as a franchise is you get on board or you get a surfboard and go to Hawaii. So that’s it.”

Lombardi said he and Murray had spoken often to the Russian winger, who has one goal, five points and a minus-one defensive rating. He said neither of them saw any discernible reaction from Frolov, who has been playing with Michal Handzus and Wayne Simmonds.

Why Frolov Is Scratched Tonight

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Here’s what Terry Murray said, after today’s morning skate, about Alexander Frolov being scratched. Frolov stayed on the ice (with Trevor Lewis) long after the rest of the players left the ice — typical for scratched players — and stayed after the bus left. I have put in a request to talk with Frolov before tonight’s game. Here are Murray’s quotes…

MURRAY: “Frolov is out. That’s really a hard one. You don’t want to take your best players out of the lineup. That’s how you win games. Your best players have to be the best every night in this game. It’s such a competitive division, a competitive conference, a competitive league, that you just havfe to have your top guys on their ‘A’ game every night in order to give yourself an opportunity to win. It’s a hard thing, but those are the demands that the players have to meet.

continued

added 4:43pm, Hammond had a chance to speak with Kings GM Dean Lombardi,

LOMBARDI: “When you sit a player out, and it’s a player who should be one of your best players, it’s safe to say you’ve probably tried everything. This is not something that was a knee-jerk reaction. That’s the first thing. Then, like I said, you’re worried about the message it sends to the rest of the team, because you want those guys to play hard.

Can You Question BS?

from Spectors’ Hockey,

Mike Kiley posts a Los Angeles blogger is reporting a rumor that has the LA Kings dealing forward Alexander Frolov to the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Kris Versteeg and defenseman Cam Barker. Kiley doubts the Blackhawks would part with Barker without getting a quality defenseman in return.

Agent Allan Walsh (via his Twitter account) said he’s been told the Frolov rumor is “pure fantasy”, adding “people should really be questioning “sources” and wonder how this BS gets started.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I think Walsh’s response pretty much says all we need to know about this. I think the basis for the Frolov rumors is his UFA status next summer. If the Kings are out of the playoff race by the March deadline and if his contract talks aren’t going anywhere with the Kings I could see Frolov getting shopped but not before then.

Frolov Talk Is Just That

from Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

As far as Alexander Frolov goes, he should really run for prime minister in Canada. They’re ready to throw feasts in his honor up there. But it doesn’t make sense for Lombardi to make a move on that front right now, unless it’s an overwhelming offer, something where the Kings give up Frolov and a top pick/prospect to get a mega-star. I just don’t see that mega-star out there right now, at least one that the Kings are interested in. Plus, Frolov’s cap hit next season is $2.9 million, which is a steal.

Frolov Out With Strained Groin

from Inside the Kings,

Alexander Frolov will be out for at least the next two games with a strained groin. You probably remember his strained groin from the end of training camp. Well, this is the other one. It’s always something, isn’t it? So they will shut him down for a few days, perhaps even a week’s worth of games, and see how it goes.

Scott Thornton out too...
