Finally Radulov Talks

In his first interview with North American media since he left for Russia during the summer, Alexander Radulov left the door open for a possible return to the NHL and the Predators.
Radulov also said recent comments attributed to him in a letter to Continental Hockey League president Alexander Medvedev — in which Radulov said he was not interested in arbitration and not interested in returning to the NHL — were incorrect.
“I didn’t say that — that letter was a misunderstanding,” Radulov said by phone Wednesday from Ufa, where he is playing for Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the KHL.
Update 1:06pm: (Alanah) Portions of the original letter Radulov supposedly wrote were publicized by the CP (via TSN) yesterday. For context, here are those segments:
“I returned to Russia not so that I could return again to the NHL but rather to offer all of my efforts and professionalism to the betterment of Russian hockey taking it to a new level,” according to a translation of the letter attributed to Radulov and provided by the KHL.
Radulov wrote the letter to KHL president Alexander Medvedev possibly to end some mixed signals on whether he wanted to return to the NHL.
“I have never been, nor am I currently, nor do I intend to hold negotiations with representatives of the National Hockey League or the International Ice Hockey Federation regarding the possibility of having the case of my transfer to the Kontinental Hockey League reviewed by the International Court of Sports Arbitration in Lausanne,” his letter states.

The Radulov Situation

Radulov – caught in the middle of a fight that he couldn’t have anticipated and said to be weighing heavily on him – has, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, hinted that he would like to return to the NHL. That came to light in an interview between Paul Kelly, the NHLPA executive director, and Toronto radio personality Bill Watters on Thursday. What hasn’t been reported yet is Radulov’s preferred timetable – not necessarily now, but by the start of next season. That’s partly because the regular season is under way in the KHL; Radulov has already received substantial bonus monies up front and feels an obligation to play it out in Ufa, for this year anyway.
Ideally, he would like to negotiate some sort of settlement between the Predators and Ufa in the interim that would permit him to do just that - play a year in Russia and then return to the NHL for the start of the 2009-10.

Absolute bombshell dropped by NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly on Bill Watters’s radio show yesterday up on 640am in Toronto (audio): That Alexander Radulov, the former Nashville Predators winger at the center of a very contentious dispute between the NHL and the KHL, wants to leave to leave the new Russian league only a few games into his career there.

The meeting agreed that the unsolved case of Alexander Radulov will go to an applicable court or – if all included parties agree – to arbitration, whose verdict can not be overruled.
The KHL furthermore informed that the league is disputing the signings of the following players by the NHL:

Predators Suspend Radulov

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that Alexander Radulov has been suspended indefinitely without pay for the 2008-09 season....
“We are disappointed Alex will not be with the Predators at the start of this season,” said Poile. “He is a world class player who demonstrated last season, with 26 goals and 58 points, that he is an emerging NHL talent. However, since he has not responded to our recent correspondence, we must move forward with our plans for the coming season.
“At some point, we hope Alex will have a desire to return to the NHL and compete in the best league in the world, with and against the best competition. We will re-visit his status at that time.
“Until then, we are focused on the players who are representing the Predators and providing them the necessary support and guidance. We will not allow Alex’s situation to be a distraction and, as such, will have no further comment on Alex or his situation.”

“We know he signed over in Russia but we are asking him to reconsider and to make a decision to come back,” Poile said. “… We feel Alex is a very, very good young player with a great future ahead of him. We feel he got some bad advice in this situation and hope eventually he will want to return to play with best players in the world in the best league in the world.
“But having said that, we don’t want to force him to come back until he wants to come back. That is not good for Alex or for his teammates. As of Sept. 1, we’re moving on.”

KHL Wants To Pay Compensation For Radulov Contract

The KHL attempts to buy-out the contract of Alexander Radulov, Bill Daly says the NHL will not even consider it in a story from the AP via the Globe and Mail.

The NHL has no choice but to play hardball in the Alexander Radulov case, because of a couple of reasons.
First of all, one of its teams has taken a severe and unexpected hit, faced with the prospect of losing one of the more talented young forwards in the game. Second, the NHL has to fight precedent, because if Radulov is allowed to play in Russia this season, there’s no telling which young European star might next be tempted by a big offer while still under contract.

Let Radulov Walk, He May Want To Come Back

Thus the best compromise is for the Predators to allow him (Radulov) to walk with the understanding that his contract with them, which has one year remaining at $984,200, will be frozen. If or when he decides to return to the NHL, it will be with Nashville under the terms of that remaining year.
Such a move would create some much-needed goodwill with the player, protect the franchise’s investment in that player and eliminate an unwelcome distraction from both the locker room and the board room.
Of course, that assumes both sides are willing to compromise — and at this time, that’s assuming a lot.

KHL Backing Radulov Contract

Despite the fact the NHL and the Kontinental League reached an agreement last week not to poach each other’s players under contract, the KHL has ruled it will uphold the three-year, $13 million contract Alexander Radulov of the Nashville Predators signed with Ufa Salavat.
That means as far as the KHL is concerned, Radulov will play in Russia next season. And that, sources say, will set up a showdown with the NHL that could throw the entire process into chaos and thwart the original agreement, which effectively would make it open season on players playing in both leagues.

Feelings On Radulov

What does it say about a player’s character when he knowingly skips out on a contract that he signed?
But there are more factors to consider.
One, of course, is Radulov’s personality. He is at times full of energy and enthusiasm, but can also be impatient, immature and easily influenced. Sound a little bit like a child? Bingo. It’s easy to see him rushing into a decision he might later regret.
That’s not to say he gets a free pass for turning his back on a commitment to the Predators. He’s 22 years of age, more than old enough to know the responsibility that comes with a signed contract.
The other factor? It’s Radulov’s talent, which is considerable.

Forget that the people who run Ufa don’t seem to have any regard for the sanctity of a contract, they don’t seem to have a very good grasp on hockey talent, either. In Radulov, they had a player who was disgruntled with his contract and his playing situation and wanted to return home, yet Ufa decided to give him $4.33 million a year for the next three seasons.
Who do these guys think they are, the Toronto Maple Leafs?

If Radulov Came Back To Nashville

Would Radulov’s coaches, teammates and fans forgive him for trying to skip out on the final year of his Nashville contract in order to play in Russia, or would they embrace the return of one of the league’s top young offensive talents?
Both Predators Coach Barry Trotz and team captain Jason Arnott say they want Radulov to return for the coming season, but they are aware some baggage might come with him.
“When you back out on your deal and you let your teammates and the whole organization down like that, it’s hard to swallow — no question,’’ Arnott said. “I can’t sugarcoat it any better. It’s disappointing.
“But if he does come back and play with us, hopefully he comes back with a good mind and be ready to play. If he does that, I think guys will forget about it....”

KHL President Not Backing Down

KHL president Alexander Medvedev said yesterday that the “existing gentleman’s agreement” worked out between the NHL, KHL and IIHF in Zurich on Thursday “is not backed by documents,” allowing Alexander Radulov to leave his Nashville contract and go to Salavat Yulaev Ufa because no international agreement had yet been signed when Radulov made his move.
Mevedev said the agreement would be signed “in two or three days, probably Monday,” and that once it is signed, it will “not be retroactive.” Radulov’s move to Salavat is “a situation not subject to dispute,” said Medvedev, who represented the KHL at the Zurich meeting.

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile issued the following statement regarding reports that Alexander Radulov has signed a contract to play in Russia…
“Alex is under contract with the Nashville Predators through the 2008-09 season. We are looking forward to him being here for training camp and being a part of this franchise’s success for years to come.”
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement in response to questions regarding the Alexander Radulov reports:
“It is our understanding, based on the representations made both at our meeting yesterday, but also at an earlier meeting with Mr. Medvedev in May, that the Russian League will not allow a player to play in violation of his contractual obligations in the NHL.”

A Breach Of The Agreement

The new agreement between the NHL and International Ice Hockey Federation to not poach players under contract hasn’t even been put into writing yet, but it has already received its first test with reports that Alexander Radulov has signed with Salavat Ufa of the Continental Hockey League.
IIHF spokesman Szymon Szemberg said neither the IIHF nor the NHL has received any official documentation concerning the Radulov signing and all his organization has to rely on are media reports. But he also said if it is true that Radulov has signed a contract in Russia, it is, “a flagrant breach of the agreement.”
Updated 2:51pm ET (Alanah): Updates to the above story:
The agent for Alexander Radulov wouldn’t say whether or not he approves of his client’s decision to sign a three-year contract with Salavat Ufa in Russia, but he did acknowledge that the Continental Hockey League team offered so much money that it put Radulov in an almost untenable situation.

Despite this contract expires in a year, Alexander decided to swap more than successful career in NHL for a comeback to Russia.
“Salavat Yulaev has been trying to sign me for two years already”, said Radulov to Sport Express. “The club general manager Oleg Gross has been keeping in touch with my agent, so I was aware they wanted to see me wear their uniform.”
“Ufa team offered me a good contract and I decided to put my signature under the contract.”
“I had a brilliant season in Nashville, so I don’t see any reasons to regret that I didn’t move to Ufa last summer.”

News organizations across North America are playing today’s IIHF announcement that the NHL and KHL have agreed to honor each other’s player contracts as if it’s some kind of peace accord, but it sure doesn’t seem that way.
All the two leagues agreed to in Zurich today (Thursday) was to continue the de facto arrangement they made several weeks ago — an arrangement given teeth by IIHF president and International Olympic Committee member Rene Fasel when he said last month that any federation that violated an existing contract would be barred from the Olympics.
