TORONTO (April 23, 2009) - Calgary Flames’ forward Andre Roy has been suspended for one game and fined $2,500 (the maximum allowed under the CBA) as a result of an incident in the pregame warm-up last night when he initiated contact with Chicago Blackhawks’ defenseman Aaron Johnson.

When Fighting Is Roughing

from Jean Lefebvre of the Calgary Herald,
Oh, how Andre Roy tried his darnedest to collect a fighting major Tuesday....
After emerging from the sin bin 120 seconds later, the antagonists quickly found each other again, once more rid themselves of the mittens and gave it another go. In Round 2, punches were thrown and punches were landed, with the last two shots being Roy lefts that stung Semenov.
“They’ll get five minutes for this one,” said Sportsnet analyst John Garrett with confidence.
Ah, but no, roughing minors were again assessed.
“When I saw the two minutes,” said Roy. “I started laughing. Is he kidding me? I don’t know, man. If that’s a roughing, I’ll take a lot more of that. I’ve seen some way (less violent) fights than that were called for five minutes.”
read on and watch the roughing penalty call below…

The Tension Breaker

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Puck drop for the Calgary Flames game in Detroit was a couple of hours away.
As players milled around preparing to face the Red Wings, the tension in the dressing room was palpable.
Then Andre Roy raced through.
With an elastic serving as a head band, his T-shirt tied in the front “like a bar beer-tub girl” and his shorts pulled up in a manner that would make Daisy Duke blush, the Flames enforcer went through the room in a flash.
He then reappeared moments later as if nothing had happened....
Off the ice, the 33-year-old right-winger relishes his job to make his teammates laugh.
It’s been that way since he was a youngster, getting kicked out of class for disrupting.

Andre Roy Feels Calgary Is A Perfect Fit
by Paul on 07/21/08 at 07:38 AM ET

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
“Right away I told my agent it was a great fit,” said the 33-year-old veteran yesterday.
Actually, it is a solid match. The Flames were in need of a tough guy with Eric Godard moving on to the Pittsburgh Penguins, especially in a division loaded with heavyweights—Derek Boogaard in Minnesota, Scott Parker in Colorado, Darcy Hordichuk in Vancouver and Zach Stortini in Edmonton.
“Every team has somebody who falls into that job—except the Red Wings,” said Roy, from his off-season home in Montreal. “Calgary—it’s a tough, physical team, and that’s a perfect fit for me.”

Back From Exile

From Erik Erlendsson at the Tampa Tribune,
Roy, however, remains on thin ice following a blow-up during the third period of a game at Philadelphia on March 6 that led to a 10-day exile from the team. He returned to practice Monday at the Ice Sports Forum - word is his teammates stepped up to defend Roy - but whether he gets into any of the remaining 10 games or how the situation affects his possible return next season remains unclear.
“Don’t ask me any questions about Andre,” said Lightning coach John Tortorella, refusing to address the subject.
Roy didn’t want to talk about the team’s actions Monday, but he did discuss the actions that led to his banishment.

Roy Sent Back To Tampa

from Lightning Strikes,
It didn’t take long for the fallout from Thursday night’s game to be revealed as Lightning enforcer Andre Roy was sent home Friday as the team prepared for tonight’s game against the Devils. Team spokesman Bill Wickett said Roy would not rejoin the team on the road trip which finishes up Sunday in Columbus.
Roy apparently will not be suspended by the league for his antics on the bench in the third period of the 3-2 loss to the Flyers, when he jawed with Riley Cote on the Flyers bench, pointed fingers and made a throat-slashing motion.
