Raycroft Signed By Canucks

via Michael DiLorenzo’s Twitter,

Canucks ink Raycroft

added 3:48pm, from Ben Kuzma of The White Towel at the Vancouver Province,

Free-agent goaltender Andrew Raycroft has signed a contract with the Vancouver Canucks. But just where the keeper fits into this crease conundrum will probably play out at training camp, unless general manager Mike Gillis plans on trading prize prospect Cory Schneider.

With backup Jason LaBarbera accepting a two-year, $2 million US free-agent offer last week from the Phoenix Coyotes, the obviously plan was to add franchise depth because Schneider seems ready make a permanent leap to the NHL. The Manitoba Moose goalie was named the AHL’s top stopper last season and told The Province last week he has nothing left to prove at that level.

The Canucks know Schneider’s trade value will only increase next season as the backup to Roberto Luongo — who’s expected to soon sign a long-term contract extension — especially if he gets enough starts behind the Canucks workhorse.

Raycroft With A Great Game, Except For One Play

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Rayzor decides to take a wrist shot up the middle, which we all know is real easy with those big paddle-board sticks, with a catchers’ mitt on one hand and a body full of heavy equipment.

Pass gets knocked down by Horcorff, leading to a chinese fire drill in which Rayzor kicks back out the puck he appeared to have saved between his legs, only to flop around and watch Horcoff slide the puck in for the 3-2 game-winner.

Rayzor makes about 50 saves tonight, many of them great ones. Then loses a game because he decided to act like Moe, Larry or Curly, take your pick.

Raycroft To The Rescue

from Woody Paige of the Denver Post,

He hadn’t won a game since Nov. 9, 2007 and only two games all last season. Two years ago Raycroft had appeared in 72 games, won 37 and lost 25. Last year he dropped to third goalie, fourth, if you count the popcorn salesman.

But the Avs threw him a goalie’s mask, a glove and a life jacket. Their starting goalie at season’s end, Jose Theodore, had moved on to Washington, and backup/ ex-starter Peter Budaj was penciled in as the No. 1 goalie.

Penciled in, not Magic Markered in.

Budaj was burned like a Roman candle in the home opener, then fizzled in the next two.

Enter Raycroft.

“I’ve worked very hard since August with Jeff (Hackett, the Avalanche goalie coach), and I felt like I could come in and play well, but I knew I couldn’t put us in a 0-4 hole,” Raycroft said.

Morning Line

“I’m anxious to get going. I’m excited about coming to Colorado.  I definitely want to show people that I’ve still got some good hockey left in me.”

Andrew Raycroft: “I still have it”

From Adrian Dater at All Things Avs

Raycroft ripped the Toronto media some, for taking comments he made about not watching much hockey away from the rink and branding him as a guy who isn’t dedicated to the game. “I made it to the NHL and have spent the last 20 years of my life dedicated to hockey. I think that shows some commitment,” Raycroft said.

He said he’s looking forward to working with a full-time goalie coach in Jeff Hackett, instead of just a part-timer like the Leafs had, in Bob Essensa. He said he’s working out hard this summer, and is currently in Denver looking for a place for the coming year.

His overall assessment of his future: “I know I still have it.”

Toronto Goalies Hang Together

from the National Post via Canada.com,

They first met two years ago while playing for opposing hockey teams in Finland. But it took a month of sharing the net for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season for Vesa Toskala and Andrew Raycroft to become off-ice friends.

The two goaltenders dine together, swap iPod playlists and cheer for the same Formula One driver. Even their girlfriends seem to be getting along.

“It’s nice to have a guy there that you can relate to and be friends with and cheer for,” Raycroft said. “I want him to do well. Especially, through good times and bad, you can sit there and kind of go through it with someone else.”

Would The Leafs Waive Raycroft

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

The Cloutier demotion makes me wonder why the Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t giving all-but-banished netminder Andrew Raycroft the same treatment.

With second-line center Kyle Wellwood out for a month (at least) thanks to his second sports hernia surgery in nine months, you’d think GM John Ferguson could use Raycroft’s $2 million in salary cap space to help plug the pivot hole.
