Betts Still Unsigned in Philly

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
First-year wingers James van Riemsdyk and Mika Pyorala were on the 22-man roster that the Flyers submitted to the NHL yesterday.
Center Blair Betts was not.
Betts, 29, is trying to make the team on a tryout contract. After yesterday’s practice in Voorhees, general manager Paul Holmgren said he was still negotiating with Betts’ agent, Steve Kotlowitz. The two sides appear to be at a stalemate.
Betts, whose agent did not return phone calls, made $615,000 with the New York Rangers last season. He has excelled on face-offs and on the penalty kill in the preseason.
“We’ll see how it goes over the next day,” Holmgren said of talks with Betts’ agent. He said if a deal isn’t completed by today, “then it’s probably not going to happen.”

TORONTO (April 27, 2009) - Washington Capitals forward Donald Brashear has been suspended for a total of six games as a result of two separate incidents—one prior to and one during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Final series Sunday against the New York Rangers.
Brashear was suspended one game for initiating contact with Rangers forward Colton Orr during the pre-game warm-up. Brashear was suspended for five additional games for a blind-side hit on New York forward Blair Betts at 9:54 of the first period.
“Brashear delivered a shoulder hit to an unsuspecting player,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “It is also my opinion that the hit was delivered late and targeted the head of his opponent, causing significant injury.”
Brashear’s suspension will be served beginning tomorrow night when the Capitals meet the Rangers in Game Seven of the series. The suspension will extend through the Capitals’ next five 2009 playoff games, the 2009-10 regular season, or both, as circumstances warrant.

NY Rangers Expect Drury Back Tonight
by Alanah McGinley on 05/01/08 at 01:06 PM ET

From the Globe & Mail:
Chris Drury is in pain with what is thought to be bruised ribs but the New York Rangers centre expects to play Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But the Rangers will be missing checking centre Blair Betts and winger Sean Avery when they try to avoid elimination from the NHL playoffs Tuesday night at the hands of the Penguins. The Penguins lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final 3-0.
P.S. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume the writer—David Shoalts, I believe—meant “Thursday night.” Tonight.
Update 2:22pm ET: More help for the Blueshirts. From Larry Brooks at the NY Post,
Lauri Korpikoski (center), the 21-year-old out of Finland who was the 19th overall selection in the 2004 Entry Draft, is expected to make his NHL debut tonight vs. Pittsburgh.
