The Latest On Bobby Ryan

from Eric Stephens of the OC Register,

Bobby Ryan is fully aware that he is front and center in the trade rumor mill as the Ducks try to keep their season from going down the drain.

As speculation intensifies that he could be included in a possible blockbuster deal, the perennial 30-goal scorer said that he would not be shocked if the Ducks were to move him.

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” Ryan told the Register on Tuesday. “That’s all I’ll say about that.”...

Asked if Ryan is on the trade market, Ducks general manager Bob Murray would only say “at any time if we get offered a deal on any player that makes this team better, we would have to take a long, hard look at that.”

Make An Offer For Bobby Ryan

from Sportsnet,

The struggling Anaheim Ducks could be looking to make a move.

The Ducks, who have only one win in the month of November, have been shopping forward Bobby Ryan, a NHL executive has told Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

Ryan has been underperforming this season, with only 11 points in 21 games. The three-time 30-goal scorer has just six points and a minus-9 rating in the month of November.

Looking on the Left

We continue our preview of the top players at each position with a look at the left wing. In my auction league with bidding that is taking place all month, I am currently looking for a low-cost left wing option, of which there are plenty. But here are the options that you can reasonably pay top dollar for or feel comfortable drafting with an early-round pick.

Prepare For Ryan/Getzlaf Part 2

from Jeff Miller of the OC Register,

At the NHL awards show Wednesday in Las Vegas, Corey Perry is up for the highest individual honor — the Hart Memorial Trophy. Ray Emery is one of three finalists for the Masterton Trophy, given for perseverance and dedication.

And Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf will be there, too, providing some of the silliness between their teammates’ substance. For the second consecutive year, they will be the comic relief, two Ducks in search of yucks.

Forty-eight hours after their season was ended in the opening round of the playoffs, Getzlaf and Ryan returned to Honda Center to shoot a skit, a sequel to the U.S. vs. Canada bit they did last season.

That video also made its debut at the NHL awards show and then enjoyed a second run as an Internet sensation. In it, Getzlaf taunts Ryan about the Canadians beating the Americans for Olympic gold.

Though sworn to secrecy until the latest video premiers, Ryan does admit he seeks revenge in Episode 2.

Ryan Suspended Two Games

TORONTO (April 16, 2011) – Anaheim Ducks forward Bobby Ryan has been suspended two games for a kicking incident against Nashville Predators defenseman Jonathon Blum in Game #2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series on April 15.

“The actions by Ryan were both reckless and dangerous,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.  “While it was fortunate there was no injury to Blum on the play, the act of using your skate in this manner is unacceptable.”

The incident occurred at 16:35 of the third period.  No penalty was assessed on the play.

Ryan will miss Game 3 and 4 of the series.

Ryan’s Knee Injury Improving

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

Ducks winger Bobby Ryan said he will try to skate Saturday morning and determine at that point if he can play against the San Jose Sharks after suffering a knee injury near the end of Wednesday’s victory over Calgary.

Ryan skated briefly on Friday but came off the ice at the start of practice. The winger was injured when Flames defenseman Mark Giordano stuck out his knee and clipped him in the final moments of a 4-2 win.

“It’s a small test,” said Ryan, who was limping significantly after the Calgary game. ”A little bit of a step forward. The treatment’s going well. A little tight, a little bruised. That’s about it. Try and get better for tomorrow.”

Ducks Need A Productive Ryan

from Eric Stehpens of Ducks Blog,

Bobby Ryan’s numbers for the Ducks to date – 14 goals and 27 points – are respectable enough but look beneath the surface and you’ll find a winger who has come up dry in December.

Ryan has just two goals and three assists with just four days left in the month, facts are which Ducks coach Randy Carlyle readily pointed out Sunday in a clear attempt to get his two-time 30-goal scorer going.

“Bobby Ryan is, I would say, in a slump,” Carlyle said. “[He] has got to take some responsibility in providing some offense too. He’s got over 20 minutes a game played and bottom line is we need more than what he’s given.”

The sharp critique of his play didn’t blindside Ryan as he said he’s heard it straight from the coach’s mouth. And it is something that he has no issue with.

“I’ve had a horrific month and I think it comes from me just getting away from the things that have made me successful,” Ryan said following a 4-1 loss to the Kings. “I know it’s there. I know I’m better than I’ve been playing and it’s been addressed obviously.

“I need to take a day here. Look at yourself in the mirror and come back at it.”

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/27/10

Raise a glass to the top performers of last night’s NHL action. It’s the latest edition of JJ’s Three Cheers:

***Cheers to Calgary’s Brendan Morrison, who potted a pair of goals in a 5-4 shootout decision over Edmonton for the 6-3-0 Flames.  With their play of late, Calgary is doing all they can to make me look bad after my unflattering opinion as to how they’d fare this season. Morrison struck in the first on the power play and added a shorthanded marker in the second period before the Oilers rallied to tie the game at 4-4. Twisting the knife in my back, none other than Alex Tanguay’s shootout goal was the deciding factor, sending the home crowd to the exits happy.

Morning Line

When you play in the Western Conference, the connectivity with the fans is very minimal compared to other places. I thought it would be a good way to connect and build … We just don’t get the fans. It’s not to say the sport isn’t big, don’t get me wrong, but we don’t get the fans that they get in the Eastern Conference. It’s never quite taken off the way is has on the East Coast. I thought this would be a way for people to connect with us.

Bobby Ryan Learning A New Position

from Randy Youngman of the OC Register,

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle made it clear in the first week of camp that Ryan will have to fail miserably to change his mind about the position change. And if the move is successful, the Ducks will have three quality centers – Getzlaf, Ryan and Saku Koivu – on their top three lines. Teams with three effective scoring lines historically go deep in the playoffs.

To his credit, Ryan has embraced the change from his first faceoff, though conceding it is on-the-job training in its essence.

“There’s a learning curve,” Ryan said. “Any time they move you to a new spot you’re not used to, there’s trial and error. It’s different, so I’m just trying to figure things out and learn where I need to be defensively. There’s still some areas I’m confused about, but I take the video home, watch it, assess it and go from there.”

Ryan, who signed a five-year, $25.5 million contract right before training camp, certainly likes getting to handle the puck more in the middle. He also likes that Carlyle is taking a look at him at the point on the power play.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Bobby Ryan to a five-year contract, running through the 2014-15 season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

“We’re pleased to have come to an agreement with Bobby before training camp,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “Bobby is already a proven NHL goal scorer at the age of 23 and certainly has his best years ahead of him.”

Ducks, Ryan Will Talk This Week

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

Don Meehan, one of Ryan’s Newport Sports Management agents, told the Register in an e-mail that there are plans to meet with Ducks management as the club’s reigning top goal scorer remains unsigned with training camp less than three weeks away.

Previous discussions have been fruitless until now with the Ducks trying to get their 23-year-old sniper signed to a long-term deal and Ryan hesitant to commit to anything more than three years. Ryan, whose 35 goals ranked 10th in the NHL last season, turned down a five-year, $25-million offer at the end of June.

Perhaps the specter of camp looming around the corner is getting some other notable restricted free agents to come to terms with their teams.

Bobby Ryan Wants To Remain With Anaheim

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

Bobby Ryan was careful with his words as he spoke, understandably so given that his contract negotiations with the Ducks have the appearance of two stubborn sides trying to see which one will blink first.

But the goal-scoring winger had this clear message that he wanted to convey. He doesn’t want to be traded, he isn’t seeking a trade and his goal is to be at training camp when it opens on Sept. 18 at Anaheim Ice.

“I don’t want a trade,” Ryan told the Register on Monday following a workout. “I’m not asking for a trade. Iwant to be here in Anaheim. This is where I want to be.

“If it comes to a situation where there’s heads butting, then I guess it would be best. But I am not looking for a trade. I have no intentions of being traded. I love it here and want to remain a Duck.”

Bobby Ryan Wants A Shorter Deal

from Randy Youngman of Ducks Blog,

Contract length appears to be the major stumbling block in stalled negotiations between the Ducks and winger Bobby Ryan, a restricted free agent.

The Ducks have offered him a five-year, $25 million deal, slightly less than $5.3 million average salaries in the contracts signed previously by linemates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. The money is fine, but Ryan apparently believes he’ll be worth more in the final years of that proposal so he would prefer a shorter term deal.

Ducks Finding It Difficult To Sign Bobby Ryan

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

In a conference call to announce the signings of center Saku Koivu and defenseman Toni Lydman, Murray revealed that he sweeten his previous offer to a flat five-year deal worth $25 million and said it was rejected.

“We went to five years at $5 million a year, thinking that after what I heard him say last week that it would be very close,” Murray said. “We offered him a four-year deal at a lower number and they flat out turned that down as quick as you can say whatever you want to say.”

Murray had previously offered five years at an amount between $20-25 million. Ryan, who led the Ducks with 35 goals last season, told the Register that he wasn’t seeking to be paid as much as top point producers Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

When asked to characterize the situation going forward, Murray said, “Basically, that situation is nowhere.”

“As you recall, Bobby said he would like to be just under Getzlaf and Perry,” he added. ”Well five and five is just under those two guys.”

Talking Bobby Ryan Contract

Would The Ducks Move Bobby Ryan For A Dman?

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

Signing Ryan to a contract extension will also be on the front burner but if this becomes a Phil Kessel situation, would the Ducks used him as trade bait to land a young defenseman with high-end potential like Schenn?

So do you go the extra mile to keep Ryan, already a two-time 30-goal scorer who just turned 23? Or do you dangle Ryan as an attractive piece to beef up a problem area if he and the Ducks can’t hammer out a deal? The club doesn’t have to be rash as Ryan is a pending restricted free agent but the big winger will get a raise this summer. A big one.

The Ducks want to keep him. How much they’re willing to pay to do so will be the question? Just food for thought.

Ducks Lose Koivu To Sprained Knee, Ryan Suspension Unlikely

from Curtis Zupke of the OC Register,

The Ducks have lost a star Finnish player to injury for the second time in as many days.

Center Saku Koivu suffered a sprained knee Thursday night, the team said late Friday. A timetable for his return was not immediately known, but recovery from a sprained knee can typically take 2-6 weeks, depending on the severity….

A suspension appears unlikely for Bobby Ryan for his hit on Kings forward Oscar Moller late in Thursday’s game.

Ryan did not have a disciplinary hearing with NHL officials Friday morning. Such hearings usually take place if a player is going to be suspended, but the league is not believed to be reviewing the play.

Disciplinary Action May Be Facing Bobby Ryan

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

The NHL may take a further look at a hit Ducks winger Bobby Ryan made on Kings forward Oscar Moller in the late stages of the Kings’ 4-0 win Thursday and determine whether Ryan be disciplined.

Ryan could face a suspension for taking a run at Moller and ramming him into the glass behind the Ducks’ net with 7.1 seconds left in the game. He was given a minor penalty for roughing, a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct.

After the game, Ryan said he expects the league will look at the hit but doesn’t believe he will be disciplined.

“I’d be very surprised,” Ryan said.  ”I coasted for 10 feet before I hit him. I did definitely take some strides in that direction. But I came in and watched what I did right away. Everything was down, my hands. It was a clean hit. He had his head down. It’s part of the game.”

Bobby Ryan Contract Talks Have Stopped

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,

Negotiations on a contract extension between the Ducks and winger Bobby Ryan have broken down and won’t resume in the immediate future, Ryan’s agent told the Register today in a phone conversation.

Mark Guy, who represents Ryan, confirmed an ESPN.com report over the weekend that the two sides did talk last month and exchanged proposals but are some distance apart in terms of an agreement.

“We have had some discussions and I think both sides kind of decided that we’re going to let things progress a little bit during the season and get a better picture of where things are going,” Guy said. “We made some proposals that we think were within what Bobby’s looking at but I think it became fairly clear that there were some discrepancies that we weren’t able to get past.”

Trying To Establish The Value Of Bobby Ryan

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

The Ducks are dealing with a shaky present following a bad home loss to St. Louis but at some point this season or afterward they’ll have to address their future with Bobby Ryan.

ryanart1Ryan is making $765,000 in the final year of his original three-year entry level contract. There have not been any discussions between the winger and Ducks management but Ryan’s agent, Mark Guy, said his client is open to getting an extension done during the season.

“I don’t know if there’s any kind of imminent time line to it,” Guy said.

The 22-year-old Ryan can become a restricted free agent in July if a deal isn’t worked out before then. Naturally this season is important as the Ducks wonder if he can follow up his 31-goal, 57-point rookie campaign that made him a Calder Trophy finalist.

General Manager Bob Murray would not comment on any contract discussions with Ryan, though he did say that he wants to see what the big winger does in his second full season.

Two Ducks Get A Taste Of A Real Battle

from Marcia C. Smith of the OC Register,

An intense explosion rocked the observation bridge where Ducks forwards George Parros and Bobby Ryan stood a week ago among Army soldiers. Startled, their bodies shook. Talking about hockey halted as soon as the battlefield simulation began.

Smoke billowed from between cinderblock buildings in this fictional Iraqi village of Medina Wasl, which was erected as the situational training ground for “The Worst Day” a soldier will see during combat.

No one was safe from this insurgents’ ambush scenario that was staged in the marketplace below. The local vendors, who were dressed in authentic Iraqi garb and who moments earlier had been selling everything from flowers and ladies’ purses to old stereos and appliances outside their stucco storefronts, ran screaming through the street in horror and fear, searching for cover.

They had to step over lifeless bodies soaking in pools of blood. They ducked to dodge live artillery fire. An Iraqi man pulled a woman from a taxi, her arm severed and leaving a trail of blood that stained the asphalt.

The New ‘Lemieux’

from Al Balderas of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

The Ducks created a lot of memorable moments during their six-game series victory over the San Jose Sharks but not many of them stood out more than the first goal scored by Bobby Ryan in Game 4.

Ryan took a pass from Ryan Getzlaf, skated into the slot and faked out Jonathan Cheechoo before beating goalie Evgeni Nobokov to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

“It’s so awesome to watch,” said Ryan’s teammate Teemu Selanne. “And I have the best seat in the house from the bench. I just need a beer.”...

Selanne compared Ryan, at this stage of his career, with Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. Lemieux scored 690 goals and had more than 1,000 assists during his 17-year NHL career.

“He reminds of me Mario, when Mario came into the league,” Selanne said. “You can’t take the puck away from him. He’s so big and strong, and his reach is so good. And then you add all the skills that he has.”

Ryan Now #9 In Honor Of Modano

from Curtis Zupke of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

There was symbolism when Bobby Ryan scored his highlight-reel goal in the third period against Dallas on Friday.

Ryan was playing his first game wearing jersey No. 9. The Ducks gave it to him per club tradition for players who have established themselves. Ryan also happened to have worn the number as a kid in homage to his favorite player: Modano.

The 38-year-old future Hall of Famer smiled when told that last tidbit.

“It gives you an idea of how long you’ve been around,” Modano said. “It’s kind of neat to see that he did that.

“He’s going to be a fun kid to watch. It seems like he’s going to have a great career. Great skill, great hands. Obviously, on that second goal he made a great move. It lets you know you’re kind of getting up there.”

Bobby Ryan Talks Kyle Turris

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

“I’ve played against Kyle numerous times and I’ve seen him play, he’s going to have a heck of a career,” Anaheim Ducks rookie Bobby Ryan told ESPN.com. “Depending on how long he’s down there, he’s going to be able to learn to be a pro in a less stressful environment and that’s certainly going to do nothing but good things for him.”

Ryan, who has exploded with a huge rookie season since his mid-November call-up from the AHL, understands how Turris may be feeling right now, given the high expectations. Turris went third overall in the 2007 NHL draft, while Ryan went second overall in 2005. Be patient, Ryan’s advice was to Turris.

“I think it’s a very important step to take, to spend some time in the minor leagues,” continued Ryan, who turns 22 next month. “You learn a little bit about yourself and you learn a little bit about yourself as a player. There’s ups and downs with that. It’s emotional. You want to play at the highest level, but there is a time frame that you spend down there [in the AHL] and you get to breathe a little easier and certainly progress.”

Bobby Ryan Enjoying The Season In Anaheim

from Bobby Ryan at AnaheimDucks.com,

I’m having a blast. Outside of the success I’ve had this year, you still get to come to the rink every day and play hockey. You’re playing a game every day. That’s pretty incredible.

I’ve gotten a little bit of everything from the fans since I’ve been here. There have been phone numbers handed to me at events. I’ve had fans wait at the hotel for me after games, because they know all the rookies are staying there. One girl wrote me a poem that she made me read out loud back to her. It’s flattering and it’s nice to be noticed. It’s been fun spending time with our fans and they’re second to none.

Bobby Ryan Finally Settling In

from Chuck Gormley at NHL.com,

When Bobby Ryan was taken by the Anaheim Ducks with the second pick of the 2005 Entry Draft, he never dreamed he’d spend the next three years splitting time between Anaheim, Portland, Iowa and Bakersfield.

He never dreamed he’d be living in a hotel room while his truck was parked in a driveway hundreds of miles away.

He never dreamed he’d ask the team that drafted him to find a roster spot for him or find another team that would.

“It’s been a roller coaster, to say the least,” said Ryan, a talented 21-year-old forward who is finally realizing his potential after switching from right wing to left wing.

Bobby Ryan Making An Impression

from Matt Vevoda of AnaheimDucks.com,

Thrust onto the Finnish Flash’s spot on the second forward line and on the first power play unit, Ryan was given the burden of trying to emulate Selanne, who at the time of his injury was the team leader in goals and league leader in power play tallies.

The 21-year-old rookie has not disappointed. In the five games without Selanne (including the game against the Oilers, in which Selanne skated only one shift), Ryan has been on the scoresheet in each contest while netting two goals (both with the man advantage) and eight points. His current five-game point streak is the longest yet of his promising career. Also with his recent surge, Ryan has vaulted into a tie for sixth place among rookie scorers in the league despite playing at least 10 games fewer than anybody else in the top 10.

This from the Stat Wizards at the Elias Sports Bureau…

Rookie Bobby Ryan assisted on the tying goal in the third period and scored the winning goal for the Ducks in their 4-3 victory in St. Louis last night. Ryan, who played 23 games for Anaheim last season but did not play his first game this season until Nov. 16, has scored 18 points (6 goals, 12 assists) in 19 games) since being recalled from the American Hockey League—the highest point total over that span among all NHL rookies. Chicago’s Kris Versteeg is second with 16 points.

Ducks Depend On Ryan

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

But the intriguing aspect Wednesday was the fact that Bobby Ryan, without even teeing it up for the Ducks in the playoffs, has apparently become entrenched as the other second-line wing.

“Our coach (Randy Carlyle) doesn’t just give people jobs,” General Manager Brian Burke said. But Burke also praised Ryan’s work in the American Hockey League playoffs last year.

There were none of the usual qualifications about Ryan. He clearly will get that chance now and presumably will be allowed to play through a few mistakes.

Ryan Hoping To Make Ducks Roster

from the OC Register,

Anaheim Ducks rookie hopeful Bobby Ryan wasn’t planning to take any chances after collecting four assists to spark Sunday night’s 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the club’s NHL exhibition finale at Honda Center.

“The cell phone will be shut off and the room phone will be unplugged,” Ryan said.

The last thing Ryan wants to receive is word that he won’t be aboard tonight’s charter flight that will carry the Ducks to London for this weekend’s regular season-opening, two-game set against the Kings.
