Trying To Establish The Value Of Bobby Ryan

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

The Ducks are dealing with a shaky present following a bad home loss to St. Louis but at some point this season or afterward they’ll have to address their future with Bobby Ryan.

ryanart1Ryan is making $765,000 in the final year of his original three-year entry level contract. There have not been any discussions between the winger and Ducks management but Ryan’s agent, Mark Guy, said his client is open to getting an extension done during the season.

“I don’t know if there’s any kind of imminent time line to it,” Guy said.

The 22-year-old Ryan can become a restricted free agent in July if a deal isn’t worked out before then. Naturally this season is important as the Ducks wonder if he can follow up his 31-goal, 57-point rookie campaign that made him a Calder Trophy finalist.

General Manager Bob Murray would not comment on any contract discussions with Ryan, though he did say that he wants to see what the big winger does in his second full season.

Two Ducks Get A Taste Of A Real Battle

from Marcia C. Smith of the OC Register,

An intense explosion rocked the observation bridge where Ducks forwards George Parros and Bobby Ryan stood a week ago among Army soldiers. Startled, their bodies shook. Talking about hockey halted as soon as the battlefield simulation began.

Smoke billowed from between cinderblock buildings in this fictional Iraqi village of Medina Wasl, which was erected as the situational training ground for “The Worst Day” a soldier will see during combat.

No one was safe from this insurgents’ ambush scenario that was staged in the marketplace below. The local vendors, who were dressed in authentic Iraqi garb and who moments earlier had been selling everything from flowers and ladies’ purses to old stereos and appliances outside their stucco storefronts, ran screaming through the street in horror and fear, searching for cover.

They had to step over lifeless bodies soaking in pools of blood. They ducked to dodge live artillery fire. An Iraqi man pulled a woman from a taxi, her arm severed and leaving a trail of blood that stained the asphalt.

The New ‘Lemieux’

from Al Balderas of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

The Ducks created a lot of memorable moments during their six-game series victory over the San Jose Sharks but not many of them stood out more than the first goal scored by Bobby Ryan in Game 4.

Ryan took a pass from Ryan Getzlaf, skated into the slot and faked out Jonathan Cheechoo before beating goalie Evgeni Nobokov to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

“It’s so awesome to watch,” said Ryan’s teammate Teemu Selanne. “And I have the best seat in the house from the bench. I just need a beer.”…

Selanne compared Ryan, at this stage of his career, with Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. Lemieux scored 690 goals and had more than 1,000 assists during his 17-year NHL career.

“He reminds of me Mario, when Mario came into the league,” Selanne said. “You can’t take the puck away from him. He’s so big and strong, and his reach is so good. And then you add all the skills that he has.”

Ryan Now #9 In Honor Of Modano

from Curtis Zupke of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

There was symbolism when Bobby Ryan scored his highlight-reel goal in the third period against Dallas on Friday.

Ryan was playing his first game wearing jersey No. 9. The Ducks gave it to him per club tradition for players who have established themselves. Ryan also happened to have worn the number as a kid in homage to his favorite player: Modano.

The 38-year-old future Hall of Famer smiled when told that last tidbit.

“It gives you an idea of how long you’ve been around,” Modano said. “It’s kind of neat to see that he did that.

“He’s going to be a fun kid to watch. It seems like he’s going to have a great career. Great skill, great hands. Obviously, on that second goal he made a great move. It lets you know you’re kind of getting up there.”

Bobby Ryan Talks Kyle Turris

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

“I’ve played against Kyle numerous times and I’ve seen him play, he’s going to have a heck of a career,” Anaheim Ducks rookie Bobby Ryan told ESPN.com. “Depending on how long he’s down there, he’s going to be able to learn to be a pro in a less stressful environment and that’s certainly going to do nothing but good things for him.”

Ryan, who has exploded with a huge rookie season since his mid-November call-up from the AHL, understands how Turris may be feeling right now, given the high expectations. Turris went third overall in the 2007 NHL draft, while Ryan went second overall in 2005. Be patient, Ryan’s advice was to Turris.

“I think it’s a very important step to take, to spend some time in the minor leagues,” continued Ryan, who turns 22 next month. “You learn a little bit about yourself and you learn a little bit about yourself as a player. There’s ups and downs with that. It’s emotional. You want to play at the highest level, but there is a time frame that you spend down there [in the AHL] and you get to breathe a little easier and certainly progress.”

Bobby Ryan Enjoying The Season In Anaheim

from Bobby Ryan at AnaheimDucks.com,

I’m having a blast. Outside of the success I’ve had this year, you still get to come to the rink every day and play hockey. You’re playing a game every day. That’s pretty incredible.

I’ve gotten a little bit of everything from the fans since I’ve been here. There have been phone numbers handed to me at events. I’ve had fans wait at the hotel for me after games, because they know all the rookies are staying there. One girl wrote me a poem that she made me read out loud back to her. It’s flattering and it’s nice to be noticed. It’s been fun spending time with our fans and they’re second to none.

Hot Bobby Ryan

A few weeks ago I wrote in my NHL.com weekly feature Bobby Ryan needed to start playing on a regular shift.  Since that time, 6 goals, 5 helpers in 8 games.  You see, the Ducks listened to me!

Ryan with the hat trick last night, and the 3rd goal was special.

Bobby Ryan Finally Settling In

from Chuck Gormley at NHL.com,

When Bobby Ryan was taken by the Anaheim Ducks with the second pick of the 2005 Entry Draft, he never dreamed he’d spend the next three years splitting time between Anaheim, Portland, Iowa and Bakersfield.

He never dreamed he’d be living in a hotel room while his truck was parked in a driveway hundreds of miles away.

He never dreamed he’d ask the team that drafted him to find a roster spot for him or find another team that would.

“It’s been a roller coaster, to say the least,” said Ryan, a talented 21-year-old forward who is finally realizing his potential after switching from right wing to left wing.

Bobby Ryan Making An Impression

from Matt Vevoda of AnaheimDucks.com,

Thrust onto the Finnish Flash’s spot on the second forward line and on the first power play unit, Ryan was given the burden of trying to emulate Selanne, who at the time of his injury was the team leader in goals and league leader in power play tallies.

The 21-year-old rookie has not disappointed. In the five games without Selanne (including the game against the Oilers, in which Selanne skated only one shift), Ryan has been on the scoresheet in each contest while netting two goals (both with the man advantage) and eight points. His current five-game point streak is the longest yet of his promising career. Also with his recent surge, Ryan has vaulted into a tie for sixth place among rookie scorers in the league despite playing at least 10 games fewer than anybody else in the top 10.

This from the Stat Wizards at the Elias Sports Bureau…

Rookie Bobby Ryan assisted on the tying goal in the third period and scored the winning goal for the Ducks in their 4-3 victory in St. Louis last night. Ryan, who played 23 games for Anaheim last season but did not play his first game this season until Nov. 16, has scored 18 points (6 goals, 12 assists) in 19 games) since being recalled from the American Hockey League—the highest point total over that span among all NHL rookies. Chicago’s Kris Versteeg is second with 16 points.

via the Anaheim Ducks,

In addition, the Ducks announced that left wing Joakim Lindstrom has been claimed on waivers by Chicago.

Ducks Depend On Ryan

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

But the intriguing aspect Wednesday was the fact that Bobby Ryan, without even teeing it up for the Ducks in the playoffs, has apparently become entrenched as the other second-line wing.

“Our coach (Randy Carlyle) doesn’t just give people jobs,” General Manager Brian Burke said. But Burke also praised Ryan’s work in the American Hockey League playoffs last year.

There were none of the usual qualifications about Ryan. The No. 2 pick in the 2005 draft (behind you-know-who) has gone through his initiation process and will be one of Anaheim’s top six forwards, although he still hasn’t shown he can handle it on the NHL level. He clearly will get that chance now and presumably will be allowed to play through a few mistakes.

Ryan Hoping To Make Ducks Roster

from the OC Register,

Anaheim Ducks rookie hopeful Bobby Ryan wasn’t planning to take any chances after collecting four assists to spark Sunday night’s 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the club’s NHL exhibition finale at Honda Center.

“The cell phone will be shut off and the room phone will be unplugged,” Ryan said.

The last thing Ryan wants to receive is word that he won’t be aboard tonight’s charter flight that will carry the Ducks to London for this weekend’s regular season-opening, two-game set against the Kings.
