Sugden Still Trying To Reach His Goal

from Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun,
This is the story of Brandon “Sugar” Sugden and his dad, Travis.
You may recall last year how the 6-foot-4, 233-pound tough guy tried out for the New York Islanders. He didn’t make it but still went to the AHL and played for the Hartford Wolfpack.
Spoke to his dad last night, who told me the former St. Mike’s Buzzer is leaving next week to try out for the Washington Capitals—and has signed with their AHL team, the Hershey Bears.
“He’s 31 years old and still trying to get there,” says a proud Travis, who’s also battling his terminal cancer to hang around to see their mutual dream of seeing Brandon play at least one regular-season NHL game.

From David Singer at HockeyFights.com,
I just got a call from Brandon Sugden. Bill Daly called him earlier tonight and said he spoke with the teams that were blocking his removal from the retirement list and that they’ve all agreed to unblock him.
When I asked him how he felt, Sugar said it’s a huge weight off of his shoulders and he’s looking forward to attending Islanders training camp, which starts Thursday in Moncton, New Brunswick. He added that he has every intention on making the team and he feels he can help the Islanders.

Finding A Way To Play

from Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star,
Former hockey enforcer Brandon Sugden will take his fight on the road – if he has to – to get a retirement rule altered so he can return to the league.
“I’ve got a call in to (NHL deputy commissioner) Bill Daly and I hope to talk to him, but if I can’t I’m going to drive to New York and talk to him in person,” Sugden said yesterday.
Sugden says he will hop into his truck Monday morning and head to New York if his reinstatement bid continues to stall through the weekend.
I heard the NHLPA’s Glenn Healy on Toronto radio yesterday and he was asked what the NHLPA can do about this, Healy responded basically nothing. the five teams preventing him from attending the NYI camp would have to change their minds.

NHLPA Investing Sugden Situation

from Lindsay Kramer at Syracuse.com,
Former Syracuse Crunch enforcer Brandon Sugden is getting closer to finding out which teams are keeping him from getting a chance at the NHL.
Sugden said Monday the NHLPA is working the case for him. And it turns out four teams actually said no to his return, not three. Two votes came in after the deadline, one was no and one was no comment. I love that no comment one.
Sugden was going to try out for the Islanders this preseason. But before he can sign a deal with an NHL component he has to get approval from all 30 teams. That’s because when he left the Crunch two seasons ago he termed it a retirement. He then immediately joined the Quebec League.
This is a follow-up story that appeared on August 27th.

NHL Teams Block Sugden

From HockeyFights.com:
Brandon Sugden‘s dream of getting one more shot at making it into the NHL has suddenly come crashing to a halt.
After scoring an invitation to attend training camp with the New York Islanders, all that was left in Sugden’s way was the approval of all 30 NHL teams. Because Sugden retired from hockey in December 2006 only to suit up in the LNAH months later, the league must grant Sudgen an unofficial reinstatement in the aforementioned form.
Unfortunately for “Sugar”, three different teams gave a thumbs down…
read on for more on why Sugden wanted to try one more time
