Morrison Looking Forward To Ice Time In Washington

from Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post (Friday edition),

Brendan Morrison received a handful of offers when free agency opened earlier this month, including a few that were more lucrative than Washington’s.

The Capitals, though, offered the veteran center three things worth more to him than a bigger paycheck: the chance to play on a team widely expected to contend for a Stanley Cup, no small matter for a player who turns 34 next month; the potential to skate on the second line with Alexander Semin and maybe take some shifts with two-time MVP Alex Ovechkin; and the opportunity to prove his worth to NHL executives in the hope of securing a multiyear deal—if not in Washington, elsewhere—next summer.

Morrison Not Happy With Benching

from Chris Foster of the LA Times,

Brendan Morrison is trying to get off that track, though it is a course change that has been difficult to make. Morrison, who suffered a torn knee ligament in March and signed a $2.75-million contract in July, has two goals and four points.

Morrison did not play against Dallas on Saturday. It was the first time he has been held out of a game as a healthy scratch since Feb. 25, 2000, when he was with the New Jersey Devils.

“It doesn’t sit well,” Morrison said about the benching. “Am I upset about it? Yeah. As an athlete, the day you aren’t upset when you’re not in the lineup is the day you shouldn’t be playing the game.

“I feel I have something to contribute to team. It’s early in the season, but it’s time to get going and start making a difference.”

Ducks Hoping Morrison Adds Offense

from Dan Wood of the OC Register,

One of only four teams to have reached the conference finals twice in the past four seasons, the Ducks took a significant step toward addressing last season’s biggest weakness – goal-scoring – with the summer signing of unrestricted free-agent center Brendan Morrison. While he is coming off April knee surgery and eased into training camp, the former Vancouver stalwart looked strong in the final three exhibition games, recording a goal and four assists.

Morrison is being counted on to team on one scoring line with Selanne, who missed most of last season while on his own hockey sabbatical. Selanne looked nothing like his age, 38, during a scintillating exhibition performance in which he put up five goals and six points in four games.

Morrison Happy With Knee Progress

from the OC Register,

(Brendan) Morrison spoke via cell phone near the Canadian border as he and his family prepared to move from Vancouver to Orange County to start a new phase of his career with a surgically repaired right knee.

The 11-year veteran has begun a skating program and said he should be ready for the start of training camp Sept.20. Actually, Morrison knows he won’t truly be ready until he gets that first taste of contact.

But he is pleased with his recovery from season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL on April 7.

“I’m in as good a shape as I can be with my knee,” he said. “I’ve got a little ways to go — I’m not going to fool anybody. But my doctor did as good a job as possible to get me ready.”

Morrison May Make Decision Next Week

from Russo’s Rants,

As I’ve been reporting since July 1, the Wild has an offer in on the Vancouver Canucks unrestricted free agent (Brendan Morrison). The two sides have talked a lot.

He is expected to make a decision early next week, and I can tell you, the Wild has no clue which way he’s leaning. The offer is there. It’s up to him.

Morrison Wants To Stay In Vancouver

from the Vancouver Province,

It’s hard to imagine that after 513 franchise games, the last image of Morrison as a Canuck could be him hobbling off the ice instead of lifting his team to victory.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Morrison said Thursday. “If it does happen to be this way, it won’t be a very fun way to go out. Does it enter your mind? Sure it does. Hypothetically, it sucks.

“But again, I don’t have any intentions of leaving. I don’t know how it’s going to play out here, but we’ll address it at the end of the year and see what the team wants to do.”

Morrison Hopes To Return This Week

from the Vancouver Province via the National Post,

While Morrison hopes to play during a four-game road trip this week, he couldn’t commit to whether that would occur Monday in Los Angeles, Wednesday in Anaheim, Thursday in Phoenix or Saturday in Dallas.

It’s not that Morrison can’t manage pain. He struggled through a hip-flexor injury before needing off-season surgery in 2006 and needed an operation to cure a sports hernia last summer.

Morrison doesn’t want to just play, he wants to make a difference.

“Pain to me is not the issue - I can deal with pain,” he added. “I’m not going to feel 100 per cent and I understand that and the team understands that.
