“What we’re trying to do is keep the game of hockey looking like the game of hockey — physical and passionate, but weed out certain hits that have crept into our game that are making it very difficult for players to play and parents enroll their kids in hockey.”

Have The Discipline Decisions Been Inconsistent?

Do you agree with Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters when he states…

Shanahan has made infinite improvements to how the NHL handles discipline. From being far more transparent than his predecessor Colin Campbell to just offering a better understanding on how the sport is played in the 2010s. But sadly, one trait which has carried over from Campbell’s regime is the staggering inconcistency with which Shanahan handles the task.

Evening Line

This is only a partial statement from player agent Allan Walsh regarding his client, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, being suspended for two games…

What message is Brendan Shanahan sending with this unwarranted suspension? All perennial Lady Byng candidates should now be on notice that when an opponent high sticks himself in the mouth, he can expect a minimum suspension of 2 regular season NHL games. This result is a shameful farce for the League.

It gets better, read the rest at Russo’s Rants.

Olczyk Chats with NHL.com

Dave Lozo of NHL.com talks to NBC broadcaster Eddie Olczyk about how Brendan Shanahan’s rulings will be adapted by the players:

Q: Is this like any other new thing in the NHL where players will eventually adjust and learn, like the clutching and grabbing rules after the work stoppage?

Olczyk: I think it’s similar, but I think this is a much longer work in progress. I think those other things are cut and dry. To me, those were black and white—the hooking, the obstruction, the holding. This is a part of the game that’s always been there. The teaching aspect of it, from coaches to players, it’s understanding how to make body contact. I like what the League has done with saying body position and body contact—the center of the body has to be the point of contact.

Now, it may be from 10 feet out and you get to two feet and the guy moves or dives. I’m not sure where it’s going, to be honest with you. I’ve been a lifer in the League, and I’m not sure where it’s going. What I think is going to end up happening is the physical part of the game is going to take a step back. For how long, I don’t know, because guys are starting to understand you could hurt somebody and you could hurt your team because you’re thrown out and or it’s a five-minute penalty and it’s going to cost you money at the end of the day.

Shanahan Explains Non-Suspension Call on Malone

“We felt that this hit was the most challenging one so far in this preseason for the Department of Player Safety to evaluate,” said Shanahan. “In the end, we felt that Malone had committed to the hit when Campoli was upright. However, when the contact was made, Campoli’s head position significantly changed just prior to the hit.

“There are elements about the hit that we don’t like – specifically, the principal point of contact being the head and that it was not a full-body check. But the overriding factor in our judgment was that Campoli’s loss of the puck and subsequent bending forward for it just prior contributed significantly, if not entirely, to those elements.”

Brendan Shanahan via NHL.com

Video footage of the hit previously posted here.

Update 4:41pm ET: via Lightning Strikes, a response from Ryan Malone—

“I already had my mind made up that I was on route to make the hit and he leaned forward a little bit,” Malone said Monday. “I still caught part of his shoulder. ... But that’s a hit you have to make and a guy has his head down. It’s not like I intentionally tried to injure him or anything. It’s a hockey hit. That’s what happened.”

Shanahan On The Future Of Fighting

from CBC,

New National Hockey League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan told the CBC that the NHL may have to examine whether fighting has a place in the game.

Shanahan made the comments Thursday in an interview conducted for the next episode of Mansbridge One on One.

“We’re definitely very serious in making advancements in studying blows to the head, we have to also looking at fighting,” said Shanahan.

“What the final decision is, I can’t tell you now, that’s something we’re obviously going to have to look at, but there’s no way we would ever deny that it’s not something we’re looking at closely,” he added.

All Brendan Shanahan

from Greg Wyshynski of PuckDaddy,

Q. Are you surprised by how well the videos have been received? We’ve had fans and media from other sports tell us how impressed they’ve been with them.

SHANAHAN: Well, I appreciate that, but it doesn’t make me happy.

I appreciate that people like that we’re pulling back the drapes and letting them see what we said, and all the pieces of evidence that we considered. But I didn’t start doing this to make good videos. I’ll consider it a big success when I haven’t made a video in two months.

Has anyone called B.S. on you yet for your rulings, behind the scenes?

[Laughs] I’m all about transparency, but that would remain private.

Shanahan Off to a Good Start

From Ray Ratto at CBS Sports:

Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s new bad cop/bad cop on the beat, was, in the immortal words of the noted hockey fan of yore Richard Pryor, “handing out time like it’s lunch” on Monday.

And good. Even if he’s overreacting, good. Especially if he’s overreacting.

Five players have lost 14 games of regular-season time and all the preseason games they have left for head shots, boarding and general mischief well beyond the pale, and more to the point, Shanahan has been explaining their crimes in exhausting detail and with repeated showings of the crimes and transgressors on video.

So it’s a start.

The NHL has taken the step the other sports still won’t—punishing perps and the teams that pay them for the dirty plays that occasionally pop up in a contest of sport.

The New Sheriff In Town

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

If recent history is any indicator , every decision will still set off a raging controversy. Some will last mere days but many, like the uproar when Campbell did not suspend Matt Cooke for a hit in March 2010 that left Marc Savard concussed and still unable to play, will boil for months and years.

(Brian) Burke said when he became the director of hockey operations in 1993, Bettman warned him what to expect. “You think you’re ready. Then the first one happens. The media is screaming at you, both teams are screaming at you. You have no idea how loud the volume gets turned up on the big ones,” Burke said….

“I think it’s important to state that I do love the physical aspect of hockey,” Shanahan said at the time. “It’s a very difficult and fine balance to keep that in the game.

“But I can’t promise you what was once a three [-game suspension] is now a seven. I think that it’s all going to be individual.”

Report- Shanahan The New Head Of Discipline?

via Darren Dreger tweet,

Sources tell TSN Colin Campbell is giving up role as NHL disciplinarian. Brendan Shanahan will likely take over.

Update 3pm ET: From TSN

Campbell will remain a key component in Hockey Operations and as such will continue to oversee such events as future general managers meetings.

Sources tell TSN Brendan Shanahan will likely take over, but there could be somewhat of an overhaul of how supplemental discipline is handled.

Shanahan’s role has continually evolved with the league. He is currently working as the NHL’s point person in dealing with equipment changes in conjunction with Mathieu Schneider and the NHLPA and is the lead man in organizing the league’s Research and Development camps.

Shanny In Charge

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo,

Unlike the Shanahan Summit – the get-together of hockey minds Shanahan hosted during the 2004-05 lockout, leading to transformational rule changes – the RDO Camp was not Shanahan’s idea. It was NHL commissioner Gary Bettman’s.

But it is Shanny’s show.

Bettman said he assigned Shanahan to run the camp with dual purposes in mind: to test ideas for improving the on-ice product at a time when it has never been better, and to give Shanahan a project that would educate him as an executive.

After all, Bettman hired Shanahan with dual purposes in mind: to tap into Shanahan’s passion for hockey and unique expertise, and to give Shanahan an experience that would be “like going to business school for him.”

While working on the game, Shanahan is researching, developing and orientating himself. Not long after he started his new job in December, Shanahan marveled at the logistics required to run a major sports league.

Another Playe From Mimico With The Cup

from Tim Wharnsby of CBC,

The venerable Blue Goose Tavern is in need of a revamping this summer.

The popular century-old watering hole in Mimico, Ont. has adorning its walls several pictures of the neighbourhood’s favourite son, three-time Stanley Cup-champion Brendan Shanahan. There also are a few photos of another Mimico native, Dave Bolland, from his days with the London Knights and winning world junior gold with Canada in 2006.

But now that the 24-year-old Chicago Blackhawks centreman has become a Stanley Cup champion, he expects Blue Goose owner Terry Chemij to make room for a picture of Bolland with the prized trophy.

“There better be,” Bolland said. “If there isn’t I’ll be pretty pissed.”

Shanahan The Head Disciplinarian?

from Jim Kelley of Sportsnet,

You’ve probably heard it by now, scattered reports (from unnamed sources, of course) that the long-time hockey star and executive office newbie is being prepped to replace Colin Campbell as executive vice-president for the NHL’s hockey operations, including taking over Campbell’s role of handing out discipline.

I don’t put a great deal of stock in it for two reasons: 1) Shanahan is woefully inexperienced in the inner workings of the oft-times Byzantine world of the NHL and 2) what person in his right mind wants to be exposed to scathing criticism from both inside and outside the league for rulings that on many occasions King Solomon himself couldn’t cleanly decide.

Official Release Of The Shanahan Hiring

NEW YORK (December 3, 2009)—Brendan Shanahan, one of the most prolific goal scorers in National Hockey League history, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and an Olympic Gold Medal winner, has joined the League as Vice President of Hockey and Business Development, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced today.

On the game side, Shanahan—an original member of the NHL Competition Committee—will work with Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell and his staff, providing insights from a player’s standpoint into trends that have emerged; he also will help anticipate trends that might develop. On the business side, he will work with Chief Operating Officer John Collins and his staff to ensure that the League’s marketing efforts fully integrate and maximize the interests of the game and the players. Shanahan, who additionally will handle special projects as determined by Commissioner Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, will be based in the League’s New York office.

#14 Belongs In The JLA Rafters

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Shanahan arrived early in 1996-97 and by late the following March the Red Wings were beating up the Avalanche in the regular season before beating them in the playoffs a couple of months later. Detroit had twisted history its way to become one of the great teams of the post-expansion era instead of its most underachieving one. No one benefited more from Shanahan than Scotty Bowman in their three-Cup partnership.

He was the NHL’s quintessential power winger, scoring 656 goals while making enemies along the way as does anyone unafraid to express an unpopular opinion and articulate enough to express it well. He is one of the last of the Old Lions of Winter, one of the last originals.

Shanahan will enter the Hall of Fame in three years and when he does so, he will go in because of what he did for the Red Wings and for Detroit, where he surely deserves to see his No. 14 raised to the top of Joe Louis.

At Peace With The Cup

from Larry Wigge at the Sporting News,

It’s a warm and humid Saturday afternoon in early August 1997 in Toronto. The sky is cloudy. Weathermen are talking about the possibility of thunderstorms. But for Brendan Shanahan, it is the most peaceful time he has spent in months.

The fun-loving Red Wings left winger has relived the team’s first Stanley Cup since 1955 every day in some way since Detroit swept Philadelphia on June 7 that year. Each player gets to spend time with the Cup—and the loquacious Shanahan celebrates the championship with friends and acquaintances, raising it above his head in front of hundreds of people.

But that’s just window dressing. Shanahan saves a special time for himself, the Cup and his father, Donal, who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 1990. After arriving at his father’s grave Aug. 9, Shanahan chokes on his words, he’s so overcome with emotion:

“Dad, look what I’ve got.”

Shanahan Retires

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,

Brendan Shanahan, who scored big on and off the ice during his 21 NHL seasons, Tuesday announced his retirement.

Shanahan leaves the game with 656 goals and 1,354 points in 1,524 games. He’s 11th all-time in goals and 23rd in points. He’s also the only player in NHL history with at least 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.

He won three Stanley Cups, an Olympic gold medal and played in eight NHL All-Star Games, but Shanahan’s ultimate legacy will be how he helped lead the game coming out of the labor stoppage that forced the cancellation of the 2004-05 season.

added 3:28pm, This just added to the same story as above…

“I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League,” Shanahan said. “I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I’ve had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career. While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can’t honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I’d be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream.”

Shanahan Should Be A Leaf

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

If the Maple Leafs are smart, they might want to get to Brendan Shanahan before the NHL Players’ Association does.

Could Shanahan fix all that ails the Leafs? No, not even close, unless he’s got a mask and some pads lying around his garage that he knows how to use.

But even after 21 seasons, with a lot of miles on his chassis, Shanahan surely could add something as an early-season pickup.

Can’t believe a lot of fans wouldn’t like seeing a boy from Mimico take his last meaningful strides with the team of his boyhood daydreams. It’d be a lot better than organizing tributes for ex-Leafs skating for other teams.

from Mark Everson of the NY Post, In order to avoid paying Brendan Shanahan his $1 million salary, and to wipe it off their books for salary cap purposes, the Devils assigned the NHL’s leading active goal-scorer to the minors, The Post has learned.

When Shanahan, who has never played a game in the minors in 21 pro seasons, did not report, the Devils were free to terminate the deal they signed with him Aug. 5. The Devils essentially cut the 40-year-old right wing on the eve of the season, making room on the 23-man roster for a rookie forward.

Your Next Exec. Dir. Of The NHLPA Should Be Shanahan

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The idea of naming a player—an athlete without a college degree, no less—to direct a union rather than selecting a labor lawyer or a Fortune 500 corporate attorney or board member, may seem naive, but no one is better educated in the history between the NHL and NHLPA than Shanahan, who has endured one strike and two lockouts through a career that commenced in 1987.

There isn’t a soul who would be on the players’ side who understands the mentality of Gary Bettman and the Board of Governors more acutely than Shanahan, who played a key role in the talks that ended both the 1994-95 deadlock and the 2004-05 stalemate after being invited into the negotiations both times by Bob Goodenow.

Understand, Shanahan has not officially retired. He most certainly has not thrown his hat into the ring for the vacancy at the top of the union. When I asked him on Thursday whether he would consider joining the NHLPA in an executive capacity, Shanahan responded by text, “Haven’t had time to consider anything.”

Shanahan & The Devils Situation

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Was Shanahan cut or did he leave the team? Shanahan is still on the Devils’ roster, so, technically, he has not been cut. It’s clear, however, that Shanahan was at least urged out the door when Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello and head coach Jacques Lemaire told him during their Wednesday meeting that there was no room for him on the top three lines and that they intended to go with younger players. Shanahan is 40. Although Lamoriello would not discuss whether he wanted Shanahan to stay as a fourth-liner, a source told me today that Shanahan was no interested in a fourth line role.

If Shanahan is still on the roster, does his $1 million salary count against the Devils’ salary cap? Yes. As Lamoriello said, today, if a player is on the roster, his salary counts against the cap.

Is Shanahan being paid? Lamoriello did not want to discuss this. There apparently is some way the Devils would not have to pay him, but I don’t know for sure. Because the regular season begins today, I believe this was the first day players began being paid their NHL salaries

When will Shanahan be removed from the roster? Lamoriello said that would probably happen when Illka Pikkarainen is ready to come off injured reserve.

Does Shanahan have to be placed on waivers to come off the roster? Lamoriello said, “not necessarily.

Shanahan Done In New Jersey

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Future Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan has left the Devils and will not be on the team this season.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Shanahan remains on the team’s 23-player roster for now, but a decision will be made on that later today.

Lamoriello said that because of the emergence of young players on the team such as Niclas Bergfors, Matt Halischuk. Rod Pelley and Ilkka Pikkarainen, there was no place for Shanahan on the team’s top three lines, which was a role that Shanahan desired. Lamoriello didn’t rule out completely that Shanahan won’t return to the team at some point this season, but it appears highly unlikely.

Shanahan vs. Sundin

from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,

Brendan Shanahan’s signing with the New Jersey Devils received barely a fraction of the ink that Mats Sundin got when he became a Vancouver Canuck, but one could argue that Shanahan might mean as much to his new team in the stretch run and into the playoffs….

Shanahan will take three Stanley Cup rings into the Devils dressing room, a cache that Sundin can only dream about. That kind of winning brings instant credibility, but in the case of Sundin, it’s something that still has to be earned. Shanahan won’t be looked upon as a saviour with the Devils, but more as a piece of the overall puzzle that could get the Devils deep into the playoffs. Sundin? Well, he has been treated as the second coming in Vancouver.

But sources say Shanahan will start skating in New Jersey today and the details of him officially becoming part of the team will be worked out in the days to come. The Devils are in Los Angeles starting a six-game road trip.

The Devils have brought left wing Brendan Shanahan back to the organization, signing the 39-year-old left wing today to what is believed to be a one-year contract. There is no timetable yet for when Shanahan will join the team and begin playing in games.

“Brendan Shanahan has agreed in principle to join the New Jersey Devils,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. “He will begin skating on his own. Brendan will join the team at a date to be determined.”

added 5:12pm, from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

Although there has been contact with Shanahan since September, Lamoriello said he had no intention of signing Shanahan until the team’s recent struggles.

“No. We had spoken to him, like a lot of other people, in September and throughout the year,” Lamoriello said. “We met face to face (Friday) and we spoke again today….”

Shanahan Talk

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

While there are some eastern conference teams that are seriously interested in Shanahan, they would have to make deals or clear cap space or get permission from ownership to increase the budget and the truth of the matter is those things are not easily done in today’s game.

So while Shanahan realizes he may have no other choice at some point but to play in the West if he wants to play, he has not yet exhausted all his Eastern Conference possibilities and if it means waiting an extra day or week or whatever to get the right fit closer to home, that apparently is the route he is going to take.

Shanahan About To Decide

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,

Free-agent forward Brendan Shanahan will be signing with an NHL team before the end of this week, possibly as soon as Wednesday, his agent told the Courier-Post on Monday….

Curran would not identify the number of teams Shanahan is considering, but the Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks are believed to be the most interested.

“It’s got to be the right fit,” Curran said. “The team has to be competitive and in a desirable geographic location, since Brendan’s family is likely going to stay in New York.”

Sundin & Shanahan Talk

from Spector at Fox Sports,

Most NHL teams have already committed most of their available cap space for this season, leaving considerably little room for these two. Still, that hasn’t prevented pundits from guessing where Sundin and Shanahan will eventually sign.

Recent reports suggest the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks could have varying degrees of interest in Sundin.

The Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues — as well as the Blackhawks, Canadiens and Flyers — are rumored pursuing Shanahan.

Shanny Shopping

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

And that decision-making process has apparently begun for Shanahan. Sources tell TSN Shanahan is in Philadelphia today to meet with Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren. It is far too early in the process to declare this a good fit. Philadelphia is close to New York but it’s not New York so if Shanahan were to play there and maintain his existing residence, there would still be some significant commuting involved.

Who Wants Shanny

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Nearly four months after becoming a free agent, Shanahan is putting himself onto the open market.

“I’ve told Rick [Curran] that I can no longer wait and that it’s time to move on,” Shanahan, referring to his agent, told The Post this afternoon. “Until now, Rick has been under instructions to tell inquiring teams that my focus was on re-signing with the Rangers, and that I was not accepting any other offers.

“That has changed.”

Shanahan Still Waiting

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Shanahan isn’t standing in the way of Dawes or Prucha. The questions - two of a series of questions, quite obviously - are whether Shanahan will be invited to walk through the door, and if so, when?

For the longer Shanahan remains out, the more alien his presence on a team that is enthusiastically embracing its collective identity will become.

Shanahan Close to Signing

On Leafs Lunch at AM640, Darren Dreger commented a few moments ago that Brendan Shanahan’s re-signing in New York is “imminent”, suggesting it could happen even later today.

added 1:08pm, from Rangers Report,

According to Rick Curran, Brendan Shanahan’s agent, the right wing’s return to New York is still very much a possibility after speaking with Glen Sather this week.

The possible hold up? You guessed it. The Rangers have virtually no money under the salary cap.
