At Peace With The Cup
by Paul on 11/19/09 at 08:38 AM ET

from Larry Wigge at the Sporting News,
It’s a warm and humid Saturday afternoon in early August 1997 in Toronto. The sky is cloudy. Weathermen are talking about the possibility of thunderstorms. But for Brendan Shanahan, it is the most peaceful time he has spent in months.
The fun-loving Red Wings left winger has relived the team’s first Stanley Cup since 1955 every day in some way since Detroit swept Philadelphia on June 7 that year. Each player gets to spend time with the Cup—and the loquacious Shanahan celebrates the championship with friends and acquaintances, raising it above his head in front of hundreds of people.
But that’s just window dressing. Shanahan saves a special time for himself, the Cup and his father, Donal, who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 1990. After arriving at his father’s grave Aug. 9, Shanahan chokes on his words, he’s so overcome with emotion:
“Dad, look what I’ve got.”

Shanahan was one of the few players willing to buck the Pollyanna flow and actually say what was on his mind – to his ever-lasting credit. He will be missed, not just by the scribblers who enjoyed crowding around his locker to exchange views about the state of the game, but by anyone who could appreciate his rare combination of skill and physicality.

Shanahan Retires
by Paul on 11/17/09 at 03:20 PM ET
Comments (10)
from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
Brendan Shanahan, who scored big on and off the ice during his 21 NHL seasons, Tuesday announced his retirement.
Shanahan leaves the game with 656 goals and 1,354 points in 1,524 games. He’s 11th all-time in goals and 23rd in points. He’s also the only player in NHL history with at least 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.
He won three Stanley Cups, an Olympic gold medal and played in eight NHL All-Star Games, but Shanahan’s ultimate legacy will be how he helped lead the game coming out of the labor stoppage that forced the cancellation of the 2004-05 season.
added 3:28pm, This just added to the same story as above…
“I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League,” Shanahan said. “I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I’ve had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career. While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can’t honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I’d be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream.”

Shanahan Should Be A Leaf
by Paul on 10/19/09 at 08:19 AM ET

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
If the Maple Leafs are smart, they might want to get to Brendan Shanahan before the NHL Players’ Association does.
Could Shanahan fix all that ails the Leafs? No, not even close, unless he’s got a mask and some pads lying around his garage that he knows how to use.
But even after 21 seasons, with a lot of miles on his chassis, Shanahan surely could add something as an early-season pickup.
Can’t believe a lot of fans wouldn’t like seeing a boy from Mimico take his last meaningful strides with the team of his boyhood daydreams. It’d be a lot better than organizing tributes for ex-Leafs skating for other teams.

It Was All About Paying Shanahan
by Paul on 10/12/09 at 08:12 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Mark Everson of the NY Post, In order to avoid paying Brendan Shanahan his $1 million salary, and to wipe it off their books for salary cap purposes, the Devils assigned the NHL’s leading active goal-scorer to the minors, The Post has learned.
When Shanahan, who has never played a game in the minors in 21 pro seasons, did not report, the Devils were free to terminate the deal they signed with him Aug. 5. The Devils essentially cut the 40-year-old right wing on the eve of the season, making room on the 23-man roster for a rookie forward.

I know nothing can be done about it, the current CBA basically forced this option, but the words, “Shanahan on Waivers” and “Shanahan Clears Waivers” got to me.
A player with Shanahan’s credentials should not be associated with the word ‘waiver’, ever!
Hopefully things workout for Brendan and he, and he alone, makes the final decision on his next move.

Your Next Exec. Dir. Of The NHLPA Should Be Shanahan
by Paul on 10/04/09 at 08:10 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
The idea of naming a player—an athlete without a college degree, no less—to direct a union rather than selecting a labor lawyer or a Fortune 500 corporate attorney or board member, may seem naive, but no one is better educated in the history between the NHL and NHLPA than Shanahan, who has endured one strike and two lockouts through a career that commenced in 1987.
There isn’t a soul who would be on the players’ side who understands the mentality of Gary Bettman and the Board of Governors more acutely than Shanahan, who played a key role in the talks that ended both the 1994-95 deadlock and the 2004-05 stalemate after being invited into the negotiations both times by Bob Goodenow.
Understand, Shanahan has not officially retired. He most certainly has not thrown his hat into the ring for the vacancy at the top of the union. When I asked him on Thursday whether he would consider joining the NHLPA in an executive capacity, Shanahan responded by text, “Haven’t had time to consider anything.”

Shanahan & The Devils Situation
by Paul on 10/01/09 at 07:59 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Was Shanahan cut or did he leave the team? Shanahan is still on the Devils’ roster, so, technically, he has not been cut. It’s clear, however, that Shanahan was at least urged out the door when Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello and head coach Jacques Lemaire told him during their Wednesday meeting that there was no room for him on the top three lines and that they intended to go with younger players. Shanahan is 40. Although Lamoriello would not discuss whether he wanted Shanahan to stay as a fourth-liner, a source told me today that Shanahan was no interested in a fourth line role.
If Shanahan is still on the roster, does his $1 million salary count against the Devils’ salary cap? Yes. As Lamoriello said, today, if a player is on the roster, his salary counts against the cap.
Is Shanahan being paid? Lamoriello did not want to discuss this. There apparently is some way the Devils would not have to pay him, but I don’t know for sure. Because the regular season begins today, I believe this was the first day players began being paid their NHL salaries
When will Shanahan be removed from the roster? Lamoriello said that would probably happen when Illka Pikkarainen is ready to come off injured reserve.
Does Shanahan have to be placed on waivers to come off the roster? Lamoriello said, “not necessarily.

Shanahan Done In New Jersey
by Paul on 10/01/09 at 12:02 PM ET
Comments (3)
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Future Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan has left the Devils and will not be on the team this season.
Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Shanahan remains on the team’s 23-player roster for now, but a decision will be made on that later today.
Lamoriello said that because of the emergence of young players on the team such as Niclas Bergfors, Matt Halischuk. Rod Pelley and Ilkka Pikkarainen, there was no place for Shanahan on the team’s top three lines, which was a role that Shanahan desired. Lamoriello didn’t rule out completely that Shanahan won’t return to the team at some point this season, but it appears highly unlikely.

from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,
It will be Brendan Shanahan’s call.
The Devils want the veteran winger, but general manager Lou Lamoriello told me on Thursday that Shanahan will make the decision as to whether he will re-sign with the club. An unrestricted free agent with interest from other teams, Shanahan is expected to make his decision by the end of next week.
So what is the holdup?
“I wouldn’t say it’s financial,” Lamoriello explained. “I want to make sure this is what he wants. He has other opportunities. Brendan is very meticulous, very professional. He has other opportunities and he’ll make the decision.”

There is enough interest around the league in Brendan Shanahan that the veteran winger is already looking forward to training camp and his 22nd NHL season.
But agent Rick Curran wouldn’t say on Monday if Shanahan and the Devils were getting close to a deal. Shanahan, 40, is an unrestricted free agent....
Curran said he didn’t know if a decision on Shanahan’s future would happen in the next few days or weeks, but said the future Hall of Famer would be reporting to an NHL training camp. He will not have to wait until mid-season before being signed, as he did last season.

Brendan Shanahan seemed to be leaning in this direction since the Devils’ season ended on April 28, but his agent Rick Curran confirmed today that the 40-year-old winger intends to play at least one more season in the NHL. It would be his 23rd season in the league.
That said, there have been no conversations so far between Curran and Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello about re-signing Shanahan, who is slated to become an unrestricted free on July 1—now only one week away. .
“I can’t say that I’ve had any conversations with any club, but Brendan is definitely going to play hockey next year,” Curran told me today.

Shanahan played 18 shifts for 13:59 in ice time and fired a team-high six shots on goal. He made it clear that he’s out to prove those who said he was finished wrong and did so for at least one night.
“I think from what I’ve read and what I’ve hard, I genuinely believed I’m better than other people did,” he said, laughing. “It’s just a funny way of saying that in spite of some things I’ve heard, I believe I can still play. But sometimes if you’re not seen for a while, you’re sort of forgotten about. I don’t think you would do what I did - not as far as the signing or tonight or the past week—I don’t think you could do what I did since July until the day Lou (Lamoriello) signed me if you didn’t believe you could contribute because it really (stunk) in a lot of ways. Driving to the rink every night and getting offered jobs in other areas of life and telling people through surprised looks that you’re actually still intending on playing, So, it might be false confidence, but it’s useful.”

Shanahan vs. Sundin
by Paul on 01/17/09 at 09:00 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
Brendan Shanahan’s signing with the New Jersey Devils received barely a fraction of the ink that Mats Sundin got when he became a Vancouver Canuck, but one could argue that Shanahan might mean as much to his new team in the stretch run and into the playoffs....
Shanahan will take three Stanley Cup rings into the Devils dressing room, a cache that Sundin can only dream about. That kind of winning brings instant credibility, but in the case of Sundin, it’s something that still has to be earned. Shanahan won’t be looked upon as a saviour with the Devils, but more as a piece of the overall puzzle that could get the Devils deep into the playoffs. Sundin? Well, he has been treated as the second coming in Vancouver.

from TSN,
Brendan Shanahan is a New Jersey Devil—sort of.
Sources says the unrestricted free agent winger is joining the team, but has yet to agree to terms on a contract and it isn’t clear at this point when that will happen or when he will be ready to play a game with them.
But sources say Shanahan will start skating in New Jersey today and the details of him officially becoming part of the team will be worked out in the days to come. The Devils are in Los Angeles starting a six-game road trip.
added 4:47pm, via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
The Devils have brought left wing Brendan Shanahan back to the organization, signing the 39-year-old left wing today to what is believed to be a one-year contract. There is no timetable yet for when Shanahan will join the team and begin playing in games.
“Brendan Shanahan has agreed in principle to join the New Jersey Devils,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. “He will begin skating on his own. Brendan will join the team at a date to be determined.”
added 5:12pm, from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,
Although there has been contact with Shanahan since September, Lamoriello said he had no intention of signing Shanahan until the team’s recent struggles.
“No. We had spoken to him, like a lot of other people, in September and throughout the year,” Lamoriello said. “We met face to face (Friday) and we spoke again today....”

Shanahan Talk

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
While there are some eastern conference teams that are seriously interested in Shanahan, they would have to make deals or clear cap space or get permission from ownership to increase the budget and the truth of the matter is those things are not easily done in today’s game.
So while Shanahan realizes he may have no other choice at some point but to play in the West if he wants to play, he has not yet exhausted all his Eastern Conference possibilities and if it means waiting an extra day or week or whatever to get the right fit closer to home, that apparently is the route he is going to take.

from Spector at Fox Sports,
Most NHL teams have already committed most of their available cap space for this season, leaving considerably little room for these two. Still, that hasn’t prevented pundits from guessing where Sundin and Shanahan will eventually sign.
Recent reports suggest the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks could have varying degrees of interest in Sundin.
The Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues — as well as the Blackhawks, Canadiens and Flyers — are rumored pursuing Shanahan.

And that decision-making process has apparently begun for Shanahan. Sources tell TSN Shanahan is in Philadelphia today to meet with Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren. It is far too early in the process to declare this a good fit. Philadelphia is close to New York but it’s not New York so if Shanahan were to play there and maintain his existing residence, there would still be some significant commuting involved.

Brendan Shanahan wants to play this season and he wants it to be with the New York Rangers. All that’s missing now is a contract.
The 39-year-old free agent has been skating with members of the Rangers over the past week but remains without a contract. There has been interest from other teams but Shanahan wants to re-sign with the Rangers.
“We’re continuing to have discussions with the Rangers with the hope of Brendan being able to play there,” Shanahan’s agent Rick Curran told ESPN.com on Tuesday evening. “Unless and until that changes we’re not interested in talking to anybody else right now.”

“My priority remains signing with the Rangers and finishing the job I came here to do two years ago. I’ve spoken with Tom [Renney] and have told him that I’m willing to accept whatever role he thinks is best for the team.
“I want to stay in New York because I believe I can contribute, but if that door closes, I’ll have some other interesting options to consider.”
The most interesting of which might be the opportunity for the 39-year-old winger to move west and join the Ducks. It is believed that Anaheim general manager Brian Burke reached out last week to Shanahan, the Rangers’ third-leading goal-scorer with 23 last season behind 25-goal-scoring co-leaders Jaromir Jagr and Chris Drury.

Mats Sundin may be getting all the ink, but he is not the only established, prominent NHL player unsure of his plans for the coming season.
Without nearly the same interest or fanfare, three of his contemporaries — Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne and Brendan Shanahan — are all facing a similar predicament.
Call them the 4-S club, a quartet of future Hall of Famers pondering what a life without hockey might be like and not sure whether the time is right to walk away.
How dramatic would their departures be? Consider that with Jaromir Jagr shuffling off to Russia, that group represents four of the NHL’s top six active-points leaders. All, except Sundin, have won the Stanley Cup.

On the assumption that Jaromir Jagr will NOT be a Ranger next season, Shanahan must be invited back for another term.
However, if management learns in a reasonable amount of time that Jagr wants to be back on Broadway for 2008-09, then Shanny must be given a fair “adieu.” No more, no less.
As far as The Maven is concerned, there’s no room on an invigorated—and, yes, it WILL be invigorated by younger aces—roster for two elder statesmen. One is enough.

Shanahan’s Avery Impersonation

From David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail blog,
Don’t look now, but a New York Ranger was spotted in the opposition’s goal crease, holding up his arms and waving like a marooned sailor on a desert island.
No, it wasn’t the attention-starved Sean Avery this time but the allegedly classy veteran Brendan Shanahan. His technique was different than Avery’s but the intent seemed to be the same, to block Pittsburgh Penguin goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury’s view of the puck. [...]
Avery’s tactics drew a vow from the NHL that any further antics would result in an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty but Shanahan did not get whistled down. However, the Penguins professed no alarm about this because, they said, the referees told them if the Rangers scored a goal it would have been disallowed.

via Rangers Report,
When I asked Shanahan about the rekindling of the bitter Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry, of which he played a major part while in Detroit, the veteran laughed.
“I thought it was pretty interesting, especially the fact that they went and got (Adam) Foote and (Peter) Forsberg back. I thought maybe Detroit would maybe try to swing a deal for me and Larry Murphy,” he said.
“I’ll watch a little bit, but it’s kind of in the past and I don’t really focus on that anymore. What everybody forgets about our rivalry with the Avalanche 10 years ago is that we were usually No. 1 and 2 in the league. Everybody talked about how much we hated each other and how dirty the games were and that was all true. But what made it most interesting was it was the two best teams in the league trying to do that to each other.”

Playoff Flashback

From Ian Winwood at The Guardian,
Brendan Shanahan tells a great story about the attitude of hockey players when it comes to the play-offs. The gritty superstar (translation: a goalscorer also capable of beating someone up) was talking about the time the Detroit Red Wings, for whom Shanahan then played, reached the Stanley Cup Finals. The year was 1998, and the Wings - who just a decade previously were dubbed ‘The Dead Things’, so awful was their play - were on their way to capturing their second consecutive championship, sweeping the Washington Capitals in four straight games. Every game was crucial; every player wanted to play.
One player in particular - Martin LaPointe, if memory serves - wanted to play very badly indeed. The physical (translation: homicidal) winger, however, was injured, and rather badly at that; the muscles in his groin were shredded like so much beef jerky.

From Sam Weinman at Rangers Report,
When Brendan Shanahan walked off the ice and saw a large group of media around his locker today, he correctly guessed that the conversation around the team had changed.
“Let me guess: today you’re not going to ask when a good time is to start resting everybody,” he said.

via Blue Notes at Newsday,
Brendan Shanahan agreed that the reason for the parity in the East was the point available in regulation ties, overtime and shootout losses. “The negative is that teams may play for the point in the last four or five minutes of regulation,” he said. “Teams in most markets---the Floridas, Toronto---are still in it. And fans enjoy the four-on-four overtime. Overall, the positives supercede the negatives---for now.”

Brendan Shanahan after losing to the Bruins today, via Rangers Report,
“Right now the biggest enemy is ourselves,” Shanahan said. “We repeat the same mistakes and it’s no one else’s fault. You don’t have to be Scotty Bowman to figure out what’s wrong with our team. We beat ourselves. So we have to fix it ourselves, and we can. It’s tough to be positive after a game like this. But it’s not like we’re playing our best hockey and we just can’t win. We’re playing as bad hockey since I’ve been here.”

Ruff Upset With Shanahan Cross-Check
by Paul on 01/17/08 at 07:26 AM ET

from the Buffalo News,
As Lundqvist made the save, however, Rangers veteran Brendan Shanahan cross-checked Clarke MacArthur into the goalpost. That dislodged the net and caused a faceoff. It also raised the ire of Sabres coach Lindy Ruff.
“There should probably be a suspension on that last play,” Ruff said after the 2-1 loss in Madison Square Garden. “The league definitely has to look at it. That was a definite intent to try to hurt somebody. He could have a broken neck, he could have a broken shoulder, he could have a broken back, he could have a number of things....”
“It was harder than I would have wanted,” said Shanahan. “It certainly warranted a penalty. I’m glad the kid didn’t get hurt....”

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
“Whatever rules you put in, you can’t unteach coaches what they’ve learned (to stop guys from scoring),” said Shanahan, who, like most people, feels many coaches are so under the gun to win, they preach defence, defence, defence.
He can see where they’re coming from; that’s the most effective way to win games, but how exciting is it?
“I had a coach tell me at the summit (session in Toronto), every coach should have a guaranteed, minimum four-year contract so they’d coach the way the fans want them to coach. Right now, they’re all in survival mode. It (the coach’s idea) didn’t make it out of the meeting in our top 10 list (of things to do). It was 11, though,” joked Shanahan,…

NHL Is No Longer New

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
For Brendan Shanahan, one of the architects of change, the view from ice level, two-and-half-years after the lockout, looks pretty good. Not perfect, but considering where the NHL was in the not-too-distant past, not bad at all.
“What I like most is people don’t call it the new NHL anymore, they’re used to it now,” Shanahan was saying Wednesday morning, as his New York Rangers began a swing through Western Canada. “Every once in a while you’ll see an old playoff series on that hockey channel. You just sit and watch that now and it’s ‘oh my god, look at that hook, look at that guy getting mobbed or held.’

Brendan Shanahan speaking to Darren Eliot at Sports Illustrated,
“The referees seem to be letting a little more go in the way of physical battles in the corners and in front of the net,” he noted. “So it is tough to score goals.”
These weren’t gripes. “Look, every night is a tough game,” he said. “If you’re off just a little, you won’t win. That’s why you can’t press in tight situations. Detroit is so experienced that they have patience to play their style no matter what the score is. When you get away from that, teams capitalize.”

Funny Shanny

from Men’s Vogue,
The interviewer, Gary Thorne, pressed Shanahan about the cottage in Ireland and running with the bulls. Finally, he brought up the Canadian Jazz Festival. To Shanahan’s dismay, he handed him a saxophone. “So, Shanny,” he said, a trifle smugly, “we wanted to have the opportunity to hear you do it.”
Shanahan, cornered, stood the saxophone on his thigh. He turned strangely calm, and he spoke without hesitating. “I would,” he said earnestly, “except the coach says, ‘No sax before a game.’ ” Such suave aplomb is only one reason I admire Shanahan.
