Brian Campbell Talks Chicago & Wings In Winter Classic

Brian Campbell participated in a tele-conference today… Q. As David mentioned, Chicago is greatly improved on the power play this year.  I think you are seventh in the league; whereas, they have not been in the top 20 in several years.  Could you talk about the effectiveness of the first unit, and talk about how the coaches worked in other partners with you on the point and what’s been working the best.

BRIAN CAMPBELL:  Well, we struggled out of the gate the first couple of games on the power play.  And I think even until we found the right mix, it took a while.  So over the last, probably 15 games maybe, we started to click pretty good.

Obviously it helps when Patty Kane is a year older and Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Sharp has his confidence going.  And obviously on the point, I’ve worked with—we found to get on the right sides and everything with Cam Barker and myself on the one unit that we are using right now.

So, you know, I think for us, we have been finding knowing our areas where to go and finding holes and we know all of our options out there, I think that’s the biggest thing about a power play is to know where your options are at all times.  For us, I don’t even have to look in a lot of instances and I know where guys are going to be in what areas.

You know, it’s good.  You need that to be a playoff team.  You need to be up there in special teams in those areas.

It Started In Strathroy For Brian Campbell

from Brett Ballantini at ChicagoBlackhawks.com,

It’s easy to imagine the grunt from a hard check into a snow bank. Pass a garage, and you’d swear there was the loud thwack! of a tennis ball against the door. And if you listen hard enough, you can hear an argument between brothers over who gets the first half-hour in the basement, practicing slap shots and wristers.

It’s here that the town’s first and only NHL player, Brian Campbell, learned how to outhustle bigger boys, outsmart older players and outhit slower ones.

Strathroy offers a pastoral setting to newcomers. Its vast blue skies, fields blooming with soybeans, corn and wheat, and pastures brimming with cattle, mirror the smaller towns you’ll find on the outskirts of Chicago.

Morning Line

“I’m really excited about what this club can do,” (Brian) Campbell said. “The main thing for me was going to a place that loves hockey and sells out their building and wants to win. I think the [Hawks] organization has proven that.

“This town is going to embrace us. I can’t wait for that [and] I can’t wait to show my personality to my teammates … to the fans and the media and get the excitement going in the city for the Blackhawks.”

From RDS (French) Brian Campbell is said to have signed with the Blackhawks.

Bob McKenzie on TSN states that the deal is still being finalized.

Note: RDS was originally reporting it’s for 8 years, $7.1 million per.  That information is uncertain.

5:45pm ET: Sportsnet’s tracker confirms the signing and the above salary.
5:47pm ET: TSN has a story up.

Brian Campbell Rumors

From Michael Russo at Russo’s Rants in the Star-Tribune, a rather vague report:

A player just told me Atlanta offered Brian Campbell a contract worth $60 million. Not sure of years, but I think seven.

Make of that what you will.

Update 2:10pm ET: Bruce Garrioch throws the Blackhawks into the mix:

Campbell to Chicago?
That’s the talk. The hawks are being aggressive and are moving towards a deal.

The Atlanta Plan

from Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

His first priority? A veteran defenseman. The Thrashers ranked worst in the league last season in shots allowed and tied for worst in goals allowed. But the team won’t necessarily go after a stay-at-home defenseman.

“You can argue both sides of that,” Waddell said, adding that an offensive defenseman can help prevent shots by helping keep the puck in the other team’s zone.

The Ottawa Sun reported the Thrashers want former San Jose Sharks player Brian Campbell and could offer the 29-year-old offensive defenseman more than $7 million.

Waddell laughed when asked about that, saying he couldn’t discuss individual players and “I haven’t told anybody what we’re going to spend.”

Many Teams Want Campbell

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Sources say the Senators believe they have a good shot at landing Campbell and he will be their No. 1 target tomorrow.

There’s talk Campbell would like to return from San Jose to the Eastern Conference—and Ottawa would be on his list.

“That’s definitely a team I’d consider,” said Campbell, enjoying the holiday weekend at his home near Strathroy. “You hear a lot of rumours and speculation about (the Senators) being interested. I know that city as well as I know Buffalo and probably better than San Jose."…

The indications are the Rangers, Thrashers, Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Bruins and Blackhawks are all going to make a pitch. And the Sharks can’t be ruled out because Campbell feels a certain amount of loyalty toward them.

A league source said Atlanta GM Don Waddell is so determined to bring Campbell into the fold that the Thrashers might be willing to table a five-year, $42-million US deal (that’s $8.4 million a season).

Morning Line

“People are lying if they’re saying money’s not a part of it, but it’s not all ‘let’s go to the highest bidder.’ It’s also a case of going somewhere where you’re happy, where you want to be and where they’re committed.”

Campbell Still Interested In Sharks

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,

I talked with Larry Kelly a few minutes ago. While he would not get into specifics, he did acknowledge that Campbell is being tugged in two directions as the July 1 opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent nears. And that family matters are indeed a factor.

“He loved his teammates and he really enjoyed the city,” Kelly said of Campbell’s time with the Sharks. “The biggest issue for him is to balance his own preference with something that may dictate that he be closer to home. That’s still evolving as we speak.

“We continue to talk to Doug” Wilson, Kelly added, “and we continue to talk seriously about a return to San Jose.”

Sharks Still Talking To Campbell

from Working the Corners at the Mercury News,

Wilson said he has more conversations scheduled over the next couple days with Brian Campbell’s agent, Larry Kelly. And, yes, he said, any reports that say that Campbell has told the Sharks he will not return continue to be inaccurate — “outside speculation.”

So with nothing really to write about for tomorrow’s print edition, let me just say I was delighted when Wayne Gretzky used the 28th pick to select Viktor Tikhonov — who grew up in Los Gatos when his father, Vasily, was with the Sharks as an assistant coach and in other capacities between 1993 and 1995.

Suddenly I had a different angle, even it was only tangentially Sharks-related.

Report: Brian Campbell Heading to UFA

From Bruce Garrioch in Off the Post,

Defenceman Brian Campbell will be going to the unrestricted free agent market. [...]

Campbell has informed the Sharks he won’t be back.

read on... for updates on Shean Donovan and the Sens

Mind you, I’ve not been Garrioch’s biggest fan today.

Update 4:28pm ET: I’ve changed the title of this post to add “Report.” According to David Pollak at the Mercury News Sharks blog, GM Doug Wilson is meeting with Campbell’s agent this afternoon.

Update 9:05pm ET: Pollak updated his blog post with this comment:

Doug Wilson is totally denying the report on the Ottawa Sun blog site that Brian Campbell has told the Sharks he will not be returning. Wilson said he talked with Campbell today and is having dinner with agent Larry Kelly tonight, and that negotiations are continuing.

“Tremendously false,” Wilson called the report that Campbell had told the Sharks he would not re-sign with them. “The accurate report is that we’ve got a scheduled discussion on this negotiation tonight and tomorrow. Nothing has changed that.”

Quite the day Garrioch is having today…

Deadline Moves

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

So we will wait to annoint Brian Campbell as the second-coming of Paul Coffey in San Jose until we see how far the 106-point Sharks go this spring. But right now the former Buffalo Sabres defenceman is clearly the best addition any team made on Feb. 26 or in the leadup to the deadline.

You can make a case for goalie Cristobal Huet in Washington (8-2, 1.83 average) and Joe Corvo (18 points in 20 games, plus-6) in Carolina, too, but Campbell has given the NHL’s hottest team exactly what they needed—a blueliner who could easily transport the puck up ice and run the power play.

He’s got 16 points in 17 games which gives him 59 points on the year, third most for defencemen after Nicklas Lidstrom’s 66 and Sergei Gonchar’s 62, and is also plus-10 in San Jose

Campbell Could Cash In

from Lyle Richardson at the Hockey News,

Now that he’s with the Sharks and a pending UFA, Campbell’s contract value certainly rise above the $25-million deal he reportedly sought from the Sabres. It has been speculated Wilson could get Campbell signed to a five-year, $30-million deal. Elsewhere, Campbell might command a $7 million per season offer.

The New York Rangers, Chicago, Atlanta, Carolina, Colorado, New Jersey and Los Angeles could be interested in Campbell and all have the available cap space to bid for his services.

Campbell Just Thinking Hockey

from Ross McKeon at Yahoo Sports,

“This season is going to get played out,” said Campbell, who appeared in his 400th game Friday. “It’s nothing against nobody; I just need to be in the best frame of mind to play my best hockey, and by leaving that on the back burner is the best for me.

“It bothered me a lot in Buffalo – it just got to me so much that it affected my play,” he added. “There’s too much at stake, too much on the line, and it’s not fair to me or the guys in the locker room probably. I haven’t heard anything anyway.”

He hasn’t heard anything from the Sharks, but in this case actions speak louder than words. San Jose has had success keeping talent from wandering off.

Sharks Have Cap Room For Campbell

from Victor Chi of the Sporting News via Yahoo,

The Sharks should be able to offer Campbell the two most important enticements for a free agent: Money and success. They have the salary-cap space to accommodate him, and the team is positioned to be competitive for several seasons --- Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo are signed through 2011.

San Jose’s ace, though, might be the Ottawa connection. Campbell and GM Doug Wilson both played junior hockey under legendary Ottawa 67s coach Brian Kilrea. Wilson often cites Kilrea as one of the most important influences in his life, and the alumni network of 67s is tight. He believes in the way Kilrea develops hockey skills and character, and his track record with the Sharks is a reflection of that.

Promoting Campbell

from Brian Milner of the Globe and Mail,

While the Sharks’ general manager was making a big splash with his acquisition of all-star defenceman Brian Campbell from the Buffalo Sabres, Malcolm Bordelon, the executive vice-president of business operations, was working behind the scenes to set in motion a marketing strategy for the team’s newest prized asset.

Within hours, the team had replica jerseys in its store and was ready with a few T-shirts and player pucks, Bordelon said between meetings after the big trade.

The team website also featured a photo montage of Campbell in action (as a Sabre and an all-star), as well as backup goaltender Brian Boucher, the team’s less illustrious acquisition on trade day.

Campbell Has One Last Request

from Sabres Edge at the Buffalo News,

Brian Campbell’s last message to Sabres fans was a simple one, and it came from the heart.

“Don’t boo me when I come back,” the defenseman said this afternoon shortly after being traded to the San Jose Sharks.

Campbell fought back tears but also chuckled with reporters as he discussed the trade. He was sent to San Jose along with a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for 22-year-old right wing Steve Bernier and a first-round pick.

“It’s life changing,” Campbell said in HSBC Arena.

Campbell Hopes To Be Involved In Sabres Playoff Push

from the Buffalo News,

The Buffalo Sabres defenseman skated with his teammates in the Amherst Pepsi Center this morning, two days before the NHL trade deadline. Campbell was optimistic the deadline will come and he won’t go.

“Yeah, that’s the only way I can look at it, though,"he said. “I can’t look at it any other way. I think we’re still in a playoff spot or we’re close, and we’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s not going to be easy, and I hope I can be around for that.”

Campbell also said, “We’ll see what happens over the next couple months,” meaning from his standpoint, the trade deadline is not a contract deadline. He will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Sabres Latest Offer To Campbell May Not Be Enough

from TSN,

The Buffalo Sabres and defenceman Brian Campbell are still a ways apart on a new contract, as the veteran defenceman and his agent Larry Kelly are expected to turn down the team’s latest multi-year offer.

Sources told TSN that the deal, offered Wednesday, is a three-year contract averaging less than $6 million a season.

Sabres Keep Working To Sign Campbell

from the Buffalo News,

Regier said discussions remain open between the Sabres and Larry Kelly, Campbell’s Ottawa- based agent.

“We continue to communicate, have spoken over the last couple of days and I expect we will again over the next few days,” Regier said. “Money and terms have been discussed.”

Asked if he felt it’s still possible to work out a deal instead of trading Campbell, Regier said, “Too early to tell, believe it or not. We’ll just keep working on it. I am hopeful because that’s what I should be. I should be hopeful and hopefully it works out.”

Decision Time Nearing

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Atlanta GM Don Waddell has to deal with the Marian Hossa situation.

Buffalo GM Darcy Regier has to deal with the Bryan Campbell situation.

And the situations are close to identical.

Both GMs are holding out hope, albeit faint, of signing those players before the trade deadline on Feb. 26 or even the July 1 date when they both are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.

But, while neither can or will say this publicly, the sense in Atlanta and Buffalo is both players are not going to sign before the trade deadline.

Campbell Wants To Stay In Buffalo

from the Buffalo News,

Defenseman Brian Campbell reiterated today that he hopes the Buffalo Sabres do not move him before the NHL trade deadline and, in fact, said he’s still hopeful of working out a new contract with the team.

Asked after the team’s pregame skate in Scotiabank Place if he expects to be with the Sabres next year, Campbell’s answer was, “That’s what I fully expect.”

Sabres Trying To Sign Campbell

from the AP via Sports Illustrated,

General manager Darcy Regier said Friday he’s had regular discussions with agent Larry Kelly in hopes of getting contract talks restarted involving Campbell, the Sabres top defenseman, who’s in the final year of his deal.

“I wouldn’t call it full-blown negotiations, we’re just keeping the lines of communication open to see where it goes,” Regier told The Associated Press during the first intermission of Buffalo’s home game against Boston. “We’ve had conversations. We never really stopped.”

Get Something For Campbell

from Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News,

Darcy Regier, the Sabres’ GM, has conceded that trading Campbell is an option. But knowing Regier, he’ll fiddle around until the trade deadline, fretting and waiting for the perfect deal. There’s also the chance that management will grow reluctant to deal their top defenseman if the Sabres get hot and position themselves as a likely playoff team.

Regier shouldn’t let the team’s performance get in the way. Sure, the Sabres could get hot and slip into the playoffs, reviving title hopes among the team’s more gullible supporters. But Regier’s main concern has to be getting something for Campbell. If another star walks away for nothing, it’ll be an outrage.

Sabres Handling Campbell Correctly

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

Brian Campbell is a good defenseman and, by all accounts, a very good citizen, too.

So why are the Buffalo Sabres playing games where his contract extension is concerned?

Because they’re smart, that’s why.

It would be very easy for the slumping Sabres to cave into Campbell’s salary demands; you know, give the locals something to smile about as the team’s losses continue to mount.

Desperate Times In Buffalo

from the Buffalo News,

Twenty minutes after the loss, Brian Campbell was storming from side to side in front of his locker, grabbing equipment and shoving it angrily into a bag. I’d never seen Campbell quite this emotional. He spoke in a quavering voice, as if he might break out in tears at any moment.

“It’s desperate times right now,” Campbell said after the Sabres lost to Ottawa, 5-3, giving up two late goals after coming from three goals down to tie the game. “The whole rest of the season is going to be desperate for us, trying to get points. You don’t gain points in this league in the second half very much, unless you’re on a complete tear.”

Why The Delay In Signing Campbell

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Brian Campbell hasn’t issued a deadline for a contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres, at least not yet. His desire is to stay with the organization that drafted and developed him, a wish he has practically screamed from the mountaintops. Let’s face it, he has an ideal situation in Buffalo.

Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier insisted Thursday that he wants to keep Campbell, but the defenseman wasn’t about to play games with these guys. He can simply finish the final 47 games of his contract, shop his services in the open market and make a pile of dough elsewhere.
