“It’s not right that the best player in the game is not a starter. We want to get the fans involved and they have the right to vote for ever they want. There’s 21,000 fans at every home game in Montreal, and everyone in Montreal is a hockey fan. Everybody who knows hockey, knows that Alex would be in the starting lineup if it went on merit. But he’s not.”
-Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau on Alexander Ovechkin not making the starting lineup of the All-Star roster. A little more from Bruce at Capitals Insider and I agree 100% with Bruce, it makes me question this process going forward.

Boudreau On Semin & Crosby
by Paul on 11/01/08 at 01:46 PM ET

from Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider,
I asked Bruce Boudreau if he had any thoughts on Alexander Semin’s comments about Sidney Crosby.
“I thought that was the biggest comment I’ve seen from him in three years,” Boudreau said. “I’m just glad to see he’s talking. Obviously, you don’t want top give anybody [bulletin board] stuff. But he said it. If it might mean he’s coming out of his shell a little bit, then good for him.”
“Not good for him that those comments were made,” he added. “I think Crosby is unbelievable. I think he is a great player and all of those things. But it was also through an interpreter, so it could have been taken out of context....”

from the Reliable Source at the Washington Post,
Six months ago, Kelly Black ran into the Washington Capitals head coach at Ballston Common Mall—where the team holds public practices—and invited him to join her kids and her best friend for lunch. “Can’t right now,” he told them. “Next time.”
Yesterday, 7-year-old Austin Black attended Caps practice with a hand-held sign: “Coach Boudreau: You promised lunch with me. Today is the day.”

Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau talks about his first day with the team:
“I had to get their respect right off the bat, so I gave Alex [Ovechkin] crap. It was on the first shift of the first practice and he missed a drill. I pulled him aside in front of the guys and told him he couldn’t do that.
“I knew I had to give it to him before anyone. If all I did was give crap to the nine guys I coached in the minors before, then it would be I was just giving crap to the AHL boys.”

Boudreau Goes To Work To Save Money
by Paul on 07/25/08 at 04:16 PM ET

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
Saturday morning, Boudreau will put 48 hockey players through their paces in something called the Hockey Resume Free Agent Camp in Niagara Falls, Ont. Now, the Hockey Resume Free Agent Camp and, let’s say, the first round of the NHL draft should not be confused. Hockey Resume is a company that tries to find jobs in the minor leagues, often the low minors, for players who don’t have contracts....
“I’m basically doing it so my son doesn’t have to pay,” Boudreau said. “They wanted something like 400 bucks (actually $325) for the camp and I said I’d help out with a practice and give their camp some validity if my son could attend for free. I did the same thing at the Roger Neilson Hockey Camp last week for my other son.”

Boudreau’s Success Paved the Way for Anderson

From Mike Brophy at The Hockey News,
John Anderson just may want to send his old pal Bruce Boudreau a thank-you card.
Given Boudreau’s success this season – he was named NHL coach of the year after a lengthy coaching stint in the minors – it made it easy for the Atlanta Thrashers to sign Anderson as their new coach.
Like Boudreau, Anderson has been a great success story in the minors, winning five championships including the American League crown this year with the Chicago Wolves.
And if you really want to get to know John Anderson, you can check out his recent experience getting a makeover. From spa treatments to new suits, it seems Anderson was getting ‘dressed for success’ even before he got tapped for the Thrashers’ job. Video below:

From the Washington Times:
Is [Bruce] Boudreau ready to be an international folk hero?
“I don’t know,” he said. “I just stay in the house. I turn off the TV because if I see myself, like most people, [they] wish they were 30 pounds lighter.”

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
On the day Bruce Boudreau finally became an NHL coach, he wondered if that was what it was like to win the lottery.
After coaching for more than 15 years in places like Muskegon, Miss., Fort Wayne and Lowell, Boudreau’s numbers finally came in at 6:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.
“He kept saying, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ But he was smiling,” Boudreau’s wife, Crystal, said.
Within 30 minutes, Boudreau was out the door and headed toward Washington.
Update: Boudreau did a live question & answer session on the Washington Post website earlier today. [Transcript]

Movie Man

from the D.C. Sports Bog,
Since that dark day, Washington is 7-4-2. They might not be the ‘84 Oilers just yet, but at least the franchise is now located somewhat north of hell. Boudreau, it stands to reason, must have deployed some sort of motivational wizardry, some magic set of words, some sloganeering that snapped this team out of its funk. Where does he get his inspiration?
“Movies, quite frankly,” he told me.
Yup, the Caps’ new boss is a movie fanatic who prefers action and adventure flicks, from crime tales to mobster dramas to historical capers. When he watches movies now, he keeps track of the motivational bits for possible use in the locker room.

A Hockey Man

from the Washington Times,
Boudreau’s life in hockey has taken him to places like Biloxi, Miss.; Muskegon, Mich.; and Iserlohn, Germany. He has been a successful coach in a wide variety of leagues but took nearly a two-decade journey before he finally got his chance in the NHL.
“He is a very passionate hockey guy who lives and breathes the game and has a great way of relating to his players,” said St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray, whom Boudreau considers a mentor from their days together in the Los Angeles Kings organization. “Bruce has a neat way about him, and he is a guy people pull for. It was tough to see another friend of mine [Glen Hanlon] lose his job, but I was happy for Bruce as well.”
added 1:38pm, from Capitals Insider,
My story on interim Coach Bruce Boudreau in today’s Post was relatively short. My interview with him was rather long. Here’s some of the good stuff that didn’t make the paper....
Q: How about your ties and suits? Some folks crack jokes.
A: “I don’t want to be this. I’m trying so hard not to be the Oscar Madison of coaching. But it’s a reputation I’ve had since I was 17 years old. I’ve tried hard to change. But I am who I am. I think I have really nice suits.”

Capitals to Learn Aggression
by Alanah McGinley on 11/30/07 at 05:39 PM ET

From Howard Fendrich at the Sun Herald,
Heading into today’s game at Carolina, the Capitals are 2-1-1 under Boudreau, giving them the same number of points from those four games as they earned in the previous 13.
“That’s what Bruce is trying to preach: Expect to win every night,” goalie Olie Kolzig said.
Boudreau will have to wait until next week, when the Capitals have five days off in a row, to fully implement his system. It calls for aggressive, attacking play, including asking defensemen to press forward, and it was responsible for an AHL championship in 2005-06, his first season with Hershey.

via the Patriot-News,
“Quite honestly,” said Boudreau, elevated Thursday from his position as Hershey’s head coach in the wake of Glen Hanlon’s firing, “I caught myself saying, ‘Ovechkin is up. Ovechkin? Holy smokes.’ That’s what caught me most of all. I was here in front of 20,000 people. It was a good situation.”
