from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen,
After a year in which another coach got fired, the team missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons, and the team’s star goal scorer demanded a trade, Murray’s hoping this season allows him to show his face in public a little more without getting a pie thrown at it.
On the eve of the season, he sat down with The Citizen to talk about a number of issues. Here is an edited version of that conversation....
Q: What would qualify as a successful year?
A: That’s a tough question.
No. 1, you have to make the playoffs, very definitely. No. 2, you have to be competitive in the playoffs.
Do you have to win every round? I don’t know.
Our plan is to try to win the Stanley Cup, without a question. That has to be a given. But we have to get back to playing at a kind of level where we get respect in this town, and we have to show the fans as a team that we really compete every night and that we really care about playing here....

Ottawa Blame Game

From TSN:
According to the Camden Courier-Post, [former coach John] Paddock feels general manager Bryan Murray should be in the crosshairs if Senators owner Eugene Melnyk hands out any more pink slips.
“I think now he’s next in line,” Paddock told the Courier-Post. “We were 14 games over .500 when I was fired. They’re seven under now. Somebody needs to take responsibility for that. Whether the coaches he hired and fired were good or not, they’re his players and they’re either not playing good or can’t play, one or the other.”
But Paddock, who is currently the head coach of the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, doesn’t think coaching is the issue in the nation’s capital.
“The players are not very good, that’s the problem,” Paddock told the Courier-Post.

From the CP via TSN,
The Ottawa Senators are soon hoping to hire a new head coach but reports Wednesday that they had found their man were premature.
“I haven’t hired anybody at this point in time,” Senators GM Bryan Murray told The Canadian Press on Wednesday morning.
Reports surfaced Wednesday that Murray had hired highly touted junior coach Peter DeBoer from the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.
“We’ve had conversations but nothing has been determined at this point in time,” said Murray.
Reports in question include Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Sun today.
Update 12:16pm ET: Adam Proteau at The Hockey News posted a similar report this morning.

by Alanah McGinley on 04/18/08 at 01:19 PM ET

From TSN,
According to Ottawa Senators General Manager and head coach Bryan Murray, Ray Emery’s tenure in the Nation’s capital is likely over.
The Senator’s top brass met with the media Friday to wrap up what turned out to be a disappointing season. When the subject of Emery was raised, Murray made his position clear.
“My plan is not to have him back,” Murray told reporters.
Team owner Eugene Melnyk, who was part of the press conference refused to comment on the Emery situation.
Update 5:05pm ET -- Updates added to that TSN story link:
Murray also said he was not about to trade Jason Spezza or Dany Heatley, saying the team made a commitment to those players being part of the team’s core group. He acknowledged that both had poor playoffs and were spoken to about it on Thursday, but added, “I’m not going to discard players like these two people.”

via Don Brennan at the Ottawa Sun,
Bryan Murray made light of the struggles of Mike Commodore yesterday, saying that while the big defenceman has brought much of what he was expected to bring to the table, the coach would like to see No. 44 improve his puck skills. “I’m going to loan him my stick,” said Murray. “I think the hands go with it.” Across the hall a few minutes later, Commodore was in no chuckling mood. “Fourteen games, no points, minus-6

from the Ottawa Sun,
Bryan Murray could be facing suspension after being ejected from Monday night’s 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks for protesting a referee’s call....
“I just kept telling (referee Wes McCauley) it was a bull---t call. ‘That’s a bull---t call you made. He said, ‘Say it again and you’re gone,’ so I said it again,” said Murray.

Sens Need To Win And Forget About Stats

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
“I don’t know if there’s anything specific at the moment. I’ve told teams we need to get healthy. We’ve said all along that it would be nice to have another forward who can score goals. But there doesn’t seem to be that person available right now. We’re just trying to find out what is out there.”
Murray said the answers mostly have to come from within.
“I’m not sure that trades do very much,” said Murray. “You may scare a person. You may eliminate a person or two from your lineup. I think we have a pretty good hockey team. You don’t want to make a change just for the sake of making a change. If that’s what it takes to stimulate this group, then I’d be pretty disappointed.
“We’ve got a good group here. We’ve obviously gotten away from our game. We’ve got too many guys worried about statistics rather than winning.”

For all of you waiting for trades to happen…
via the Ottawa Sun,
“Having an extra Top 6 forward allows for injuries and allows for a lot of things that happen like (Eaves and Alfredsson) being out,” Murray told the Sun. “That’s always the ideal scenario to be able to do that and we’re going to pursue that, without a doubt.
“However, we know full well that until teams are eliminated from the playoffs, we’re probably not going to be able to make many deals for that quality of a player.”
