A Second Look at Goalies
by Ian Gooding on 09/14/11 at 08:00 AM ET

In my previous preview of the top goalies, I had mentioned Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist, Pekka Rinne, and Ryan Miller as my top five options. Upon reflection and much debate, I discovered many other names that could be considered top 5 (or at least top 10). Many goalies are drafted in the early rounds of fantasy drafts, since top-notch starting goalies can be impossible to find on the waiver wire once the season starts. To help you find the right goalie(s), I have provided ten more goaltending options that could legitimately fall into the category of the NHL’s better starting goalies. And I promise that there will be no commercials while you read this.

The Case for Number One in Goal
by Ian Gooding on 08/22/11 at 08:00 AM ET
Comments (2)

Determining a first overall pick in this year’s fantasy hockey drafts is anything but easy, but we probably know this much: the first overall pick won’t be a goalie. Yet a goalie is an important investment to fantasy hockey teams, since only two goalies can be responsible for four out of a team’s ten stat categories in many fantasy hockey leagues. The need for solid goaltending explains why many starting goalies can fly off the board early in fantasy hockey drafts.

The post-season push begins as the deadline approaches
by The Upper Canadien on 01/31/11 at 09:45 PM ET

This is it folks. The all-star game is over, and the back nine starts tomorrow, as the Canadiens face the Washington Capitals in D.C. Many questions await Montreal in their march towards the playoffs, but many have also been answered through the first 50 games of the season. A quick recap on what we know so far.
Can Carey Price pick up where Jaroslav Halak left off? He has done that and more, earning an all-star spot and Vezina chatter in the process. A .920 SVP ain’t bad, especially when you’re on pace to start 74 games (or 73.8, for those who do the math).

Habs have momentum, Price to ASG
by The Upper Canadien on 01/11/11 at 07:06 PM ET
Comments (2)
The Montreal Canadiens have suddenly won 3 of 4, after a poor slate of games that had people wondering whether their first half was a fluke. A solid performance against Pittsburgh, followed by a come from behind thriller against Boston, means Montreal is again within striking distance of the Northeast lead, and has some much needed momentum as they embark on the second half of their season.
Of late, a few players have performed brilliantly. Benoit Pouliot scored the shootout winner against Pittsburgh, and he, Mathieu Darche and recent callup David Desharnais have formed a poor man’s French Connection, playing solid, two way hockey while chipping in offensively. Scott Gomez appears to be back, after about 25 games in the wilderness, and Carey Price is again performing like the star the Canadiens need him to be.

Questions face Habs as game #41 looms
by The Upper Canadien on 01/05/11 at 06:17 PM ET

I’m back from a wonderful vacation to Atlantic Canada, and the Habs are back from their worst road trip in a couple of years. While I wasn’t able to see all the games (hiking Newfoundland took priority - my Lord is it beautiful! Anyone living out there is very, very lucky), I saw enough to know the Canadiens are in trouble. That’s obvious to anyone, as they’ve fallen from the top of the Eastern Conference to eighth, and four points away from losing their playoff spot.
So what’s a General Manager to do?

Montreal looks to get back on track in Dallas
by The Upper Canadien on 12/21/10 at 06:13 PM ET
Comments (1)
A 9 pm puck drop tonight as the Canadiens take on Dallas. Word is that Andrei Kostitsyn and Yanick Weber will be healthy scratches, though you never know anything with Jacques Martin until his lineup card is handed in.
It appears Lars Eller will get a further look on one of the top two lines. I hope to see Pouliot get a bit more ice time as well. It stands to reason that after a solid year thus far, and a lack of production from the top two lines, that Benny deserves a shot. Yet Benny was on the fourth line and the extra man at practice yesterday, so who knows.
As for the defence, PK Subban skated with Hal Gill towards the end of Sunday night’s loss to Colorado. An interesting tandem and perhaps a more natural fit for Subban, as Gill stays back and covers for the young Torontonian. Subban hasn’t looked as confident since his healthy scratch streak two weeks ago. Which Subban will show up tonight?

So it’s not NJ that always beats the Habs, it’s Brodeur
by The Upper Canadien on 12/02/10 at 10:19 PM ET
Comments (3)
New Jersey almost always beats Montreal. It’s a pattern going back over a decade. Tonight, the Habs rolled over the Devils, 5-1, after the Devils beat the Habs just weeks ago. The difference? Marty Brodeur two weeks ago, Johan Hedberg/Mike McKenna tonight. A goal ten seconds in, and another just a minute later. Great play by Lars Eller. Extremely strong play by Yannick Weber. All this depsite a press-box seat for the Habs most talented player (arguably) PK Subban.
Oh, and Carey Price? Bang on. Yet again. Almost got a shut-out. The best NHL hockey he’s ever played has been this season.

It’s Grey Cup Sunday, and this is the one weekend all year that the Habs take the backseat to the Montreal Alouettes.
But I’m not much of a football fan, so I’m still talking hockey.
The Canadiens had a so-so weekend, falling to Atlanta on Friday (Pavelec is a heckuva goaltender) while defeating Ryan Miller’s Sabres 3-1 Saturday, beating one heckuva goaltender.
And who won the game Saturday? Carey Price. While he lost the shutout with a minute to go, he sports a GAA of 1.95, even more impressive when you consider that he has started 22 games - of which he has one 14, more than he won all of last season.

It’s Not Just Randy Newman: The Habs also love LA
by The Upper Canadien on 11/24/10 at 10:49 PM ET
Comments (4)
Or, at the very least, they like playing the LA Kings. The Montreal Canadiens looked determined on Tuesday, putting in an impressive night’s work in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The Habs were led by a goal and an assist from first star Andrei Kostitsyn, and 24 saves from Carey Price.
A milestone goal late in the second period was Lars Eller’s first as a Hab, 22 games into his tenure as a Montreal Canadien. While Eller has been a disappointment thus far, he has worked hard in his meagre eight or nine minutes of ice time each game. It was nice to see him, finally, rewarded.

Habs blow lead, fall to Flyers
by The Upper Canadien on 11/22/10 at 09:38 PM ET
Comments (1)
That’s one the Canadiens will want to forget rather quickly. After a solid start, and two goals by Max Lapierre, Brian Boucher looked to be in for a short night. However, the Flyers had other ideas, and crashed and banged their way to a 3-2 comeback win in Philadelphia. That’s the first time this year the Canadiens have scored first and lost.
Carey Price was without question the best Hab on the ice, making 41 saves in the loss, some of them spectacular. Genuinely, it could have been 8-2 with someone else in net. The Canadiens power play continued to struggle, and Scott Gomez continued to be almost invisible.
Other observations? Claude Giroux is the real deal, and Chris Pronger is still a great defenceman. He’s still a complete jerk. But he’s also still a great defenceman.

Habs continue surge
by The Upper Canadien on 11/21/10 at 04:49 PM ET

With a rematch of last week’s physical affair on the docket for tomorrow night in Philadelphia, the Montreal Canadiens are no doubt enjoying some rest today after a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Maple Leafs in Montreal. The Pat Burns tribute was wonderful – the Canadiens do these things so well. And the win was a great way to cap off what had been an emotional two days in Montreal.
With the win, Carey Price now has 4 shutouts in 19 starts – the same number he had in his career coming into this season. He is ranked 1st amongst goaltenders with 12 wins in 19 games, and 1st in minutes played with 1,142. Price has stunned even his most fervent supporters, making highlight-reel saves with a focus we’ve never seen from the young Montreal goaltender.

Habs go gently into that good night versus Predators
by The Upper Canadien on 11/18/10 at 09:59 PM ET
Comments (1)
Not a great game for the Habs this evening, as they were blanked by the Predators 3-0. But hey, it happens. Nice to see Francis Bouillon tally two assists and get second star. Also nice to see Sergei “The Mobster” Kostitsyn get roundly booed each time he touched the puck.
My big takeaway from this game? Jarosalv Spacek looked lost. He was reasonably good for a brief few games, because his ice time was down in the wake of the return of #79. But with the absence of Markov, Spacek is being relied on for too many minutes, and his age is showing. He was out of position on two goals, and it was glaringly obvious. Not to mention he missed a perfect chance in close to score early on in the game.

Price Hearing Cheers In Montreal
by Paul on 11/18/10 at 12:57 PM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Is there a better story right now in the NHL? Price has won over a market that spent the summer lamenting the loss of playoff hero Halak, and it’s nothing short of remarkable. A lot of these fans were ready to pounce on Price seven weeks ago. The pressure was high entering this season.
Looking at it, you can’t picture a situation where there could be more pressure on an individual,” Jerry Price, Carey’s father, told ESPN.com via phone Tuesday from Williams Lake, B.C. “But I think for Carey, looking at the situation and seeing that, he just realized it is what it is. He’s grown up and matured. One of the big differences in Carey is the realization that all he can do is go play. There’s just so many things that are out of his control. He can only do what he can do. It’s been better for him this year.”
The 23-year-old Price had zero wiggle room when the puck dropped this fall. He was replacing the most beloved Habs goalie since Patrick Roy. There was only one way to the fans’ hearts: winning.

The sans Markov era begins with a win
by The Upper Canadien on 11/16/10 at 10:23 PM ET
Comments (2)
Many expected the Montreal Canadiens to be somewhat lackluster on Tuesday night, perhaps downtrodden due to the long absence that appears to be ahead for their best defenceman, Andrei Markov. But give the Canadiens credit, they brought their best game to the Bell Centre, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 in their first meeting since last spring’s heartbreaking playoff defeat.
Carey Price picked up where he left off against Carolina on Saturday night, making several highlight reel saves in leading the Habs to their fourth straight victory. Seriously folks, some of these were phenomenal. He has really turned a corner. And how about that, three shutouts this season for Carey Price, who previously got shutouts on a frequency comparable to appearances by Haley’s Comet. This level of goaltending is something Montreal hockey fans have not seen from Carey Price. He was good in 2008, but this is better. Carey Price is for real.

What a difference a year makes
by The Upper Canadien on 11/09/10 at 10:05 PM ET

The Montreal Canadiens looked very good Tuesday night. They played a complete game, start to finish. Carey Price was sensational at times, making 33 saves, and everyone from Tomas Plekanec on down to Tom Pyatt had scoring chances.
More importantly, somewhere in the world last night, a pig must have taken flight, because not only were both Canadiens goals scored by defencemen, the second one was – brace yourself – scored on the power play. By Roman Hamrlik. Assisted by Jaroslav Spacek.

Habs blow a tire in Columbus, changes on defence coming
by The Upper Canadien on 11/02/10 at 08:53 PM ET
Comments (5)
Tuesday evening was not kind to the Montreal Canadiens, who were outplayed and outhustled by an enthusiastic Blue Jackets team. Carey Price was the difference for the Habs – he made too many outstanding saves to count. Benoit Pouliot was probably the closest to scoring for the Habs, with a good chance halfway through the third. The Montreal power play continued to falter despite the return of Andrei Markov, and it is very quickly becoming a significant issue. Mathieu Garon was great, scoring the shutout for Columbus in their 3-0 win.
The biggest surprise of the evening? The play of Jaroslav Spacek, or rather the fact that he played at all. Coach Jacques Martin had hinted that Spacek would be out, a rumour considered confirmed by Alex Picard, who spoke to reporters about how excited he was to be playing with Andrei Markov (a player he’d never been paired with before, as Markov had been out with a knee injury). However, coach Martin apparently had a change of heart and dressed Spaced, who promptly took a penalty early on that resulted in a Columbus power play goal and gave Columbus an unnecessary power play (Columbus scored about five minutes later, on a power play due to a Benoit Pouliot penalty. Credit to dwgs for noticing the error). Spacek also did his best to score on Carey Price early in the game, in a painful miscue, but Price managed to make a toe save involving reflexes beyond the imagination of most, this author definitely included.

Habs hold on for sixth win with Markov on the horizon
by The Upper Canadien on 10/27/10 at 09:25 PM ET
Comments (6)
Carey Price started his ninth game straight in style, making a number of big saves early in leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders. The Habs managed to hang on in a dramatic third period in which the teams traded goals back and forth, and Benoit Pouliot missed on a penalty shot. Andrei Kostitsyn capped the scoring with an empty net goal, his fifth in the past five games.
Tomas Plekanec and PK Subban led the way for the Montreal offence, also benefitting from the strong bottom-six play of Jeff Halpern, Mathieu Darche and Benoit Pouliot. Halpern recorded a goal and an assist while Darche also tallied a goal, as Montreal’s checkers brought energy and presence against a gritty Isles offence. Montreal’s power play continued to struggle, lacking presence on the point and a big body down low. The good news: ranked 30th, it literally can’t get any worse.
In any event, the Habs will be back at it against the Islanders on Friday night, this time in New York. Alex Auld is likely to see his first start in net, handing back to Carey Price for a Saturday night tilt in Montreal against the Florida Panthers.

Habs top Phoenix, sit first in East
by The Upper Canadien on 10/25/10 at 09:17 PM ET
Comments (2)
The Montreal Canadiens won a hard fought victory Monday evening, prevailing 3-2 in overtime over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Andrei Kostitsyn scored the winner, potting a beautiful goal on a play that had him flying through the air after it was scored. Linemate Mike Cammalleri posted a goal and an assist to go along with fours shots on goal. And in perhaps the brightest story in Montreal so far this season, the Habs received more solid goaltending from Carey Price, who stopped 27 of 29 shots for the win. His best saves came late in the third, when he made a glove save on a Phoenix Coyotes one timer, and then moments later stopped a Derek Morris slapshot to preserve what was then a tie. Remember back in September when people were predicting he’d crumble under the pressure? Almost one month in and he seems to be getting better.
More impressive than anything?
After eight games, the Canadiens are first in the East with five wins and 11 points. Led by the solid play of Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec, and PK Subban, along with fantastic goaltending from Price, the Habs have played a reasonably tough schedule to success. Not much rest for the weary though, as the Canadiens have three more games this week, with the Islanders next up on Wednesday night.

The Canadiens got the job done Saturday night, beating Ottawa 3-0 and securing Carey Price’s first shutout in almost two years (the last, for those wondering, was November 11th, 2008, against those same Senators). This was a good night for Montreal fans, a true team effort highlighted by two goals from Andrei Kostitsyn and, finally, a goal for the hard-working Benoit Pouliot.
Faceoff challenges
Let’s take a look at Montreal’s efforts thus far in the faceoff circle, which currently have them a disappointing 19th league wide. Jeff Halpern has been a pillar of consistency, as expected, and is currently sporting a 60% faceoff win percentage. However, after that, things get dim. Tomas Plekanec checks in at a mediocre 48%, Scott Gomez is just behind him at 47%, and the recently scratched Dustin Boyd is down the ranks at 40%. Occasional centre Max Lapierre checks in at a reasonable 44%.

Successful weekend for the Habs
by The Upper Canadien on 10/18/10 at 07:59 AM ET
Comments (2)
The Montreal Canadiens had a productive weekend, taking four points from two divisional rivals in wins over the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. On Friday night, Carey Price was the hero, making a number of good saves against a Buffalo team that often seems to have Montreal’s number when playing South of the border. On Saturday, it was the team’s turn to bail Price out from a couple of unfortunate goals, as the Tomas Plekanec line put on a show, recording 15 shots in coming back from a 3-1 deficit. Andrei Kostitsyn, who has looked like a different player sans Sergei, scored the winner with minutes to go.
Where did Lars go?
One negative to come out of the weekend was the play of Lars Eller, who has seen himself go from a potential top line winger to fourth line scrub.

Carey Price deserved much, much better last night as the Montreal Canadiens fell 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Habs were up 4-3 with about a minute to go when PK Subban went to the penalty box. Tampa Bay then scored a controversial power play goal, as Dustin Boyd was tripped by Ryan Malone in front of the referee and no call was made. The goal was scored in the moment following the trip.

All Eyes On Price Tonight
by Paul on 10/13/10 at 11:21 AM ET

from Louis Jean of Sportsnet,
I can assure you Carey Price will be the most applauded player by the 21,273 fans at the Bell Centre tonight. Ironically, he could also get booed off the ice before the game is over should he not play up to par.
There is clearly a love-hate relationship that exists between Price and the team’s supporters. It goes much deeper than the Jaroslav Halak trade. In the eyes of the fans, Price has been a disappointment. He has failed to establish himself as a bona fide No. 1 netminder. When he made the team at 20 years of age, some called him the savior, the next Patrick Roy. The bar was a smidgen high for the kid, don’t you think?
There is no doubt in my mind the Montreal Canadiens have the most passionate and knowledgeable fans you will ever find. The downside is they’ve got a very short fuse. Sure Price hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, however, the maturation process is taking its course. Several prominent and well-respected hockey minds have told me they are convinced Price will become a dominant NHL goaltender.

If there was any doubt that he would be up to the challenge – and there was – he put his critics on notice last night, with a remarkable 36 save performance against Pittsburgh in a 3-2 victory. Save after save, Price demonstrated poise and athleticism, rebounding after each Pittsburgh goal to shut down the impressive Penguins offence. Indeed, after the game coach Jacques Martin commented that Price was the reason Montreal won.

The Canadiens may have lost to the Maple Leafs last night, but there were a lot of things to like about Montreal’s game. Carey Price looked good, if not very good, making a key save early on Phil Kessel and a highlight reel save late. Yes, he let in three goals, and yes, perhaps he went down a tad early on a few shots, but his lateral movement was excellent. I am buoyed by Price’s performance, and I urge people to be patient.

Jacques Martin addressed the media this morning and advised that cuts are to come later today, before the 3 pm NHL deadline. He and GM Pierre Gauthier are still be weighing options ahead of tomorrow’s season opener versus Toronto. The decisions on who stays and who goes have become a bit more difficult due to injuries and illness.
As per the always informative Habsinsideout, Goaltender Carey Price has come down with the flu, and if he is unable to start expect to see Alex Auld between the pipes. Roman Hamrlik has also been ruled out for tomorrow’s game.

The Habs looked good on Monday night, putting on an offensive show in a 6-2 win over the Florida Panthers. Some veterans, Mike Cammalleri and Tomas Plekanec especially, seem to be rounding into form fairly quickly. Lars Eller? Did The Canadiens Make A Mistake?
by Paul on 09/26/10 at 08:27 PM ET

from Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette,
When Carey Price reacted like a deer in the headlights to the first shot he faced in his first NHL exhibition game, you could feel a little tremor go through Montreal.
When he followed that up by surrendering a total of 10 goals on 39 shots over his first two starts, that tremor might have registered on a few seismographs.True, it’s only the exhibition season. The games are meaningless and so are most of the performances.
But with Price — the Montreal Canadiens starting goaltender — you want to see some confidence. You want to see some saves. You want to see something, anything, to prove that Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier didn’t make the biggest blunder in 15 years when he dealt playoff hero Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis in the off-season.

Habs lose to Sens, fall to 1-2 in pre-season
by The Upper Canadien on 09/25/10 at 09:03 PM ET
Comments (4)
The Canadiens had a good first and it went south from there during Saturday night’s game against Ottawa. However, any worries are likely unnecessary, given that the Senators dressed a fairly NHL heavy lineup, while the Canadiens were a bit lighter on the talent side. Regardless, one would have hoped for a better showing from Carey Price after his game against the Bruins on Wednesday. Against Ottawa, Price again proved off, surrendering six goals on 30 shots. While some of these goals were not his fault (Jaroslav Spacek gets a nod here), and there were clearly defensive errors, Price still needs to stop the puck - you can’t win giving up six goals. But it is the pre-season, and many a team have come up empty in September only to blaze out of the gates in October.
Who’s impressed so far, and who’s a step behind?

Don’t Judge Price Just Yet

from Craig Custance of The Sporting News,
Jaroslav Halak left Montreal as one of the most beloved athletes to play for the Canadiens. Even after the goalie was traded to the Blues this summer, fans in Montreal have continued to support him.
Part of the public frustration in Montreal already being shown to Canadiens goalie Carey Price is the inevitable comparison to Halak. Price was booed in his first action of the exhibition season when he allowed four goals on nine shots on Wednesday.
Halak thinks it’s way too early for any judgment of Carey Price in Montreal.

Habs news and notes for September 24th
by The Upper Canadien on 09/24/10 at 02:13 PM ET

A few notes from Habsland as the Canadiens prepare for the Senators tonight:
- Markov’s return: Big news for Habs fans. According to RDS’ Renaud Lavoie, via Twitter, Andrei Markov will be back in October. This is great news, as Markov’s knee injury could have potentially held him out until November or December. My take? Even if he’s ready in week one, sit him against Toronto. You can’t trust that Grabovski.
- Carey Price says chill: As you’ve likely already heard, Carey Price suggested fans overreacted the other night with their booing and asked them to calm down and relax. And you know what? He’s right. It’s September. It’s the pre-season. It never ceases to amaze me how seriously people take these games. Enjoy watching the hockey, but fear not – Carey Price will be ok and the Habs will be a competitive team.

Halak of an effort against Bruins

Well that was ugly, to say the least. Carey Price let the first goal in at 1:33 on a Nathan Horton wrist shot, and the boos began. Thirty minutes into the game, he’d allowed four goals on ten shots - and that was all she wrote for Mr. Price. He left the ice to more than scattered boos from the Montreal crowd, and all of a sudden things aren’t so rosy after Montreal’s 2010 playoff run. Perhaps more telling than anything? Price did not make himself available to the media after the game

Price Booed In Montreal

from Damien Cox of The Spin,
There are two ways out for Carey Price.
One, he can have a strong season and make Montreal Canadiens fans forget Jaroslav Halak. Well, if not forget Halak, at least make it appear that their isn’t as large a talent gap between the two young netminders as some contend.
Two, Lars Eller can be really, really good. Really, really fast.
If neither of those scenarios emerges over the next couple of months, Price could be facing animosity of rather startling dimensions, at least when he plays in front of home audiences at the Bell Centre.
In the Habs first exhibition start Wednesday night against Boston, Price allowed four goals on nine shots and was booed. Afterwards, he wasn’t talking, preferring silence to a description/analysis of either his play or his feelings.
added 8:20am, from Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out,
That Canadiens goalie Carey Price wasn’t available to say a few words to the media after Wednesday’s 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins might or might not have been his choice.
If Price chose not to speak, he would have been helped a great deal by having someone on the team suggest to him – strongly – that it was in his best interests to make a dressing-room appearance, if even briefly.
If it was the Canadiens who chose not to make him available, they did their No. 1 goalie, and themselves, a disservice.

Captain Kangaroo?

As you’ve probably heard by now, François Gagnon of La Presse exclusively broke the story late last week that Brian Gionta was to be named the 28th captain of the Montreal Canadiens. While I don’t doubt the veritability of the news there is still no official announcement from the Habs, and they insist a decision still has yet to be made. If it is Gionta, it will be the safe choice, the expected choice and a good choice. A quiet leader who excels in big game situations, Gionta is respected by his teammates and willing to take the team on his back. That said, such a decision will be a disappointment to some who hoped that veteran rearguard Andrei Markov would get the nod, given his tenure with the Canadiens and his own ability to lead through on ice performance.

Carey Price Ready For The #1 Tag

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,
The lows gnawed at the goalie during an ugly playoff sweep two seasons ago and again during his uneven results last year.
“It’s a tough town to grow up in,” Price said needlessly of Montreal. “You’re going to grow up real quick. If you don’t, you’re out. Lows are a part of sports. Hopefully, they don’t last long. You just have to work harder and not pout.
“Any goalie who tells you he’s not felt (times of despair) is lying. You go through periods when you feel helpless. But you get over it. This is better than working out in the bush ... it’s one of the greatest jobs on Earth. We’re very fortunate people to be able to do what we do. ...
“They say you can’t buy experience, and that’s true. In three years, I’ve pretty much seen everything the NHL could dish at me. That’s going to help me in the next few years.”
Famously impatient Canadiens fans won’t merely hope for Price to play well from Game 1, they’ll demand that he does.

Canadiens find a Price they like
by The Upper Canadien on 09/02/10 at 05:26 PM ET

I came in from swimming to a radio report I’d been waiting, nay hoping for, and was surprised to find it validated many a media members comments from the past few weeks. The reason I was most excited? I can finally stop using puns involving the word price. Yes, Carey Price is again the starting goaltender of the Montreal Canadiens, and all it took was a contract of two years at a total cost of $5.5 million.
This suggests a number of things. Firstly, many pundits in the past two months were correct: the deal would end up being two years. Why? Well, Price likely wanted one year, to prove he was better and could start a full slate of games, and the Canadiens likely wanted a longer deal, seizing the opportunity to lock Price up when his, er, price was rather low due to last year’s lackluster performance.

Price, Canadiens Agree On A Two Year Contract
by Paul on 09/02/10 at 02:55 PM ET

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of goaltender Carey Price to a two-year contract (2010-11 and 2011-12). As per Club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“We are extremely happy that Carey has agreed to pursue his career with the Canadiens. Carey is a key member of our Club. He has proven that he has what it takes to be a good goaltender in the league, and we are confident he will perform to the best of his abilities for years to come in a Canadiens uniform”, said Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.

Talking Price Contract

from TSN,
Talk of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price “going on strike” appear to be a bit pre-mature.
In an interview with RDS, Price’s agent Gerry Johannson says that negotiations between the Canadiens and his client continue to progress, however he admits there is plenty of work to do before a deal can be announced. Johannson told RDS he hopes the next few days can be productive and his client will have a deal in hand, ready to start training camp.

A little more on Carey Price
by The Upper Canadien on 08/21/10 at 11:47 AM ET

Another brief update on Carey Price today, with more discussion of his off-season rodeo habits - and a pretty snazzy picture of Mr. Price lassoing from atop a horse.
Now word that the Canadiens are in fact none to pleased with Mr. Price’s penchant for his horse habits, and while they softened their stance to allow his participation in a competition a week ago (as discussed on Kukla’s Korner) they are not enamoured with his choice of off-season training (scoop credit to Ron Reush of TheReushBlog).
Price Living Life like a Cowboy
So, what do fans think, Habs and otherwise: should NHL teams be able to mandate the off-season activities of their players? How about when they are not technically under contract, like Mr. Price? While the players are assets, and teams must protect their well being, they are also individuals with hobbies and interests.
How specifically should NHL teams be able to dictate the activities of their players?

Habs name new director of hockey operations
by The Upper Canadien on 08/20/10 at 08:22 PM ET

According to various media outlets, the Montreal Canadiens are on the verge of announcing the appointment of Patrick Boivin as their new director of hockey operations, replacing Julien Brisebois, who recently left for the same position in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.
Boivin, the son of Canadiens outgoing president Pierre Boivin, assumes the “capologist” role that Brisebois previously filled. The role of general manager of the Hamilton Bulldogs, previously also held by Brisebois, will now be managed by Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.
In other news, there is no news regarding unsigned starting goaltender Carey Price.

Carey Price update

Well Habs fans, it’s August 16th18th and Carey Price still hasn’t signed. What’s he been up to lately? As has been reported elsewhere, he took part in a rodeo event in BC this past weekend.
As the article notes, Price should stick to hockey, “He recorded two no-time scores as he was unable to snare the calf’s hind leg with his lasso.”
It’s good to see that the article mentions that Price needed to receive approval to participate, because that means the Canadiens at least intend to sign him. Seriously though, we’re getting perilously close to September. How long until the dreaded ‘H’ word makes it into articles? Can the Canadiens seriously start the year with Alex Auld in net?

Hi everybody, I’m excited and humbled to be writing here for Kukla’s Korner starting this fall. A longtime hockey fan who has always dabbled in writing, I look forward to providing my thoughts and opinions on the goings-on in today’s NHL. While I plan on contributing a couple of pieces a week, I endeavour to provide up to date commentary when stories are breaking, both league wide and specific to the Montreal Canadiens. While my columns will often focus on the Habs, I will also be providing pieces on the NHL and adding a “News & Notes” section to most of my articles. Without further ado…
With training camp a month off, I felt it would be a good time to discuss the potential of the 2010-2011 Montreal Canadiens. While a trade or signing could still happen, the uninterrupted silence of the past month and a half suggests otherwise (unless you include the deafening roar, I mean slight ripple, generated by the signing of defenceman Alexandre Picard).
