Rangers Organization Had Interest In Chelios

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Rangers general manager Glen Sather recently offered Chris Chelios an AHL contract to play in Hartford, but the veteran free agent defenseman rejected that offer to sign a deal with the Chicago Wolves in order to be closer to his family, The Post has learned.

“We’d talked a number of times over the summer, and I talked to Torts [head coach John Tortorella] at the U.S. Olympic evaluation camp, but they told me the Rangers were going in a different direction with their kids,” Chelios told The Post by phone. “I see that their guys are off to a good start, but if they’re looking for veteran help down the road, I’d love to play there.

“I appreciate the offer to play in Hartford, but I decided to sign with Chicago because that’s where my parents live, and it means a lot to me that they’ll be able to come see me play."…

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad game at Madison Square Garden,” said Chelios. “If the Rangers need help and are interested, Chicago shouldn’t be too far away for them to come take a look.”

More On The Chelios Plan

from Elliotte Friedman & Tim Wharnsby of CBC,

The number one reaction to the NHLPA’s 19-3 vote in favour of forming a players committee to review the entire organization has been disappointment.

This sentiment was expressed because most players and agents felt that the Chris Chelios-led conference on Sunday evening was an extremely important step in rebuilding the tattered union.

But eight player reps either did not partake in the call or did not vote, leaving Chelios one vote short of the necessary 20 and three shy of the 25 required for a quorum.

Under the new NHLPA constitution, players can still cast a vote up to 72 hours after the conference call.

The speculation is that Chelios will eventually get his desired result.

Chelios Leads The Fight

from Lester Munson of ESPN,

Chelios and others have questioned the validity of Kelly’s dismissal, arguing that excluding Kelly from board meetings violated the union’s complex constitution. Kelly and a battery of six lawyers are examining the circumstances of the meeting and other union actions to determine whether Kelly will challenge it, sources said.

Three teams (Carolina, Ottawa, and San Jose) had no representatives at the meeting where Kelly was dismissed. The five teams who voted against Kelly’s dismissal were Anaheim (George Parros), Columbus (TK Malholta), Detroit (Chelios), Edmonton (Sean Horcoff), and Chicago (Adam Buresh). Even as he serves as the group’s interim leader, Penny is under attack by a number of players and agents. As the union’s top lawyer, he has lost four consecutive player grievances. During his time with the union, he has lost more grievances than he has won.

Both Hargrove and Pink were heavily involved in the efforts that led to Kelly’s dismissal. Hargrove is a former official of the auto workers union in Canada, and Pink was a candidate for executive director when the union selected Kelly. The anti-Kelly faction also included former union ombudsman Eric Lindros and union pension chief Kim Murdock.

Chelios Talks NHLPA

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,

On the day after Paul Kelly’s firing as the NHLPA executive director, Chris Chelios is in explaining mode. He was skating today in Detroit, trying to stay in shape as he waits for a contract offer (he’s ruled KHL out and confirmed talks with Nashville). But I imagine most of the calls he’ll get today will be about Kelly’s firing. Even as I type this, Chelios is on his cell in the hallway. He could be ordering a pizza, but I’m guessing Kelly’s firing will dominate most of his discussions.

I asked him what the response has been from his fellow NHLPA members as he explains the thought process behind Kelly’s firing.

“A lot of guys obviously don’t know what happened, couldn’t see it coming,” said Chelios, an NHLPA executive board member. “Half the board couldn’t see this coming until we got to the meetings. At the end of the day, once everybody is filled in on what happened, they’re going to understand and we’re going to move on.”

continued

added 1:00pm, from the CP via TSN,

In an interview with The Canadian Press on Tuesday, Damphousse said Paul Kelly, who was fired by the association’s executive board Monday, was victim of “a kind of paranoia in the group.

“For the new guy coming in, the players need to let him work. There was maybe too much leeway before and now it’s like the guy is in handcuffs. He’s got to be able to work with confidence.”

Can You Imagine Chelios In Nashville?

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,

One of the names being tossed around is 47-year-old Chris Chelios, whose abrasive style of play and frequent conversations with referees often made him a target of Predators fans.

Coach Barry Trotz and Chelios recently had a light-hearted talk on the topic.

“I said, ‘Chris, are you sure you’d have the interest of playing in Nashville, because you’re not exactly well-liked here?’ ‘’ Trotz said. “He said, ‘Trotzy, trust me, I’m not well-liked anywhere.’ I said ‘Yeah, I guess you’re right.’ ‘’

Chelios wanted out of town 10 years ago when things were turning bad. Now the Hawks are Stanley Cup contenders and they should be thinking about getting better and taking the next step, not bringing back former greats who are way past their prime.

I like Cheli a lot, and he would come cheap, but it’s best he goes and plays somewhere else.

Is Chelios A Fit In Chicago?

from Steve Rosenbloom of RosenBlog at the Chicago Tribune,

Chris Chelios won’t be back with the dreaded Detroit Red Wings after 10 years and two Stanley Cups.

So, it’s a gimme he’ll be back with the Blackhawks.

Question is, in which role?

First, would hockey guru Scotty Bowman approve the 47-year-old’s inclusion on the roster?

Wings Not Interested In Chelios For Next Season

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Chris Chelios will not be returning to the Red Wings.

General manager Ken Holland met with Chelios Monday afternoon and, as expected, gave him the news Chelios will not be re-signed.

“It was kind of understood last summer, after Cheli signed, that the 2008-09 season would be the last one for Cheli as a Red Wing,” said Holland, noting the need for the Wings to bring in younger players. “He wants to play another season and I believe he can still play."…

Holland also said he expects to talk with agents for Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Ty Conklin and Tomas Kopecky this weekend in Montreal during the NHL Entry Draft.

Chelios confirmed to ESPN.com on Saturday he’s been asked by team GM Brian Burke, also GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, to join the team in some off-ice role. Burke told ESPN.com there are a number of great players who’ve played a significant role in U.S. hockey over the past decades, “but the greatest warrior of all was Chelly.”

“We haven’t refined his role. All I know is, I want him involved,” Burke said.

If Wings Win The Cup, Chelios Will Need Some Help To Get His Name On It

from Camwest News Service via the National Post,

Since he played in only 24 regular-season games, Chelios doesn’t qualify for a Stanley Cup inscription. A player must suit up for 41 games or appear in at least one game of the final series to get his name on Lord Stanley’s mug.

There is a second chance, however.

The Wings can, and likely will, petition to have Chelios added to the Stanley Cup list. But that might mean Chelios will require a favour from his old rival, National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman.

“I don’t really care what he says anyway,” Chelios said. “If that’s my biggest worry, I’m doing pretty well. If we win it, I’m not too worried about it. My name is already on the Cup.”

Chelios & His Mob Friends

from Arash Markazi of Sports Illustrated,

Then again, Chelios isn’t you’re average 47-year-old NHL defenseman. He’s the ringleader of the “Malibu Mob,” an exclusive gang of athletes and celebrities that live in Malibu and hang out together during the summer. The Mob currently includes John Cusack, John McEnroe, Tony Danza, John C. McGinley, D.B. Sweeney, Laird Hamilton and Gabrielle Reece.

“I’m going to take credit for the name,” said Chelios. “Tony Danza and myself were the original two guys that came up with that and, slowly but surely, we built a little clan with most being Irish. It’s a cool thing. We are like a mob. We travel in a pack whether it’s for sports or dinners or family outings we’re all together for two months out of the years.”

The name actually arose because Chellios would constantly point to the fact that most everyone in the group was Irish and that it was like hanging with the “Irish Mob” even though they would usually meet at Taverna Tony, a famous Greek restaurant in Malibu.

A Decade Of Chelios In Detroit

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Chris Chelios was the pain in the neck the Detroit Red Wings hated to play against and their fans loved to hate.

Then, suddenly, he joined them. Monday marks the 10th anniversary of the day Chelios, a player so closely identified with the Chicago Blackhawks, switched allegiances, following a surprising trade to Detroit.

And though he is playing sporadically as his career winds down—this surely will be his final season, at least with the Red Wings—he has left his mark as one of the cornerstones of Detroit’s defense since 1999.

Franzen Feeling Better, Chelios Still Sore

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Johan Franzen (sprained left MCL) and Chris Chelios (fractured right tibia) were on the ice for the first time since they were injured, both skating before the team started practice.

Franzen fared much better, saying his range of motion feels good and doesn’t anticipate being out as long as he was last year (10 games) with the same type of injury. Chelios only skated for a few minutes and quickly learned he’s not close to returning.

“I felt good,’’ Franzen said. “I’m starting slow so I don’t want to risk anything, just long strides and go in laps.’’

Chelios The Player

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,

This is about loyalty, a player’s to his team and a team’s to a legend.

This isn’t about money for Chris Chelios, who at 46 is back with the Detroit Red Wings for his 25th National Hockey League season. Not when he’s being paid $750,000, spillage in many of today’s NHL contracts.

This is about hockey coursing through Chelios’s veins, about his willingness to sit more than he’ll play simply because he loves the game too much for the puck to drop next month without him.

The Best Of Chelios

from Brian Costello of the Hockey News,

It’s nice to see Chris Chelios back for another season with the Detroit Red Wings.

At 46, Chelios is the oldest NHL player since Gordie Howe retired in 1980 at age 52. Now entering his 25th season, Chelios will one day retire with a number of standards that will never be matched.

Here are 10 of them. (Note: some are projected. Chelios will keep playing until 50.)

10. Win Stanley Cup titles 16 years apart: 1986 in Montreal and 2002 in Detroit.

Just How Long Has Chelios Been Around

from Ryan Dixon of the Hockey News,

Just as numbers alone could never sum up his on-ice contributions, to truly appreciate the span of Chelios’ career it must be set against the backdrop of a sporting and cultural timeline.

Consider the following:

• Chelios played his first season of Jr. A hockey (then known as Tier-II) with the Saskatchewan League’s Moose Jaw Canucks in 1979-80 at age 17. Jimmy Carter was the president of the United States, not a punch line on The Simpsons and The Beatles could have still held a reunion tour with Ringo, Paul, George and John.

The Real Story of How the Wings Broke the Cup

From James Duthie at The Good, The Bad and The Duthie,

Here’s what happened:  Chris Chelios was atop the bar, Coyote Ugly style, Cup in hand, with the packed crowd cheering madly.  At some point there was an attempted handoff to Brett Lebda.  Whether it was the chaos of the crowd, or the…umm…content of the blood, balance was lost.  Down went Lebda.  Down went Stanley.

And no, the dent wasn’t “slight”.

In fact, it needed emergency service.  Mike Bolt, the Keeper of the Cup, was taken to Joe Louis Arena, where Stan, like a forward who took a puck in the eye, was placed gently on the trainer’s table in the Red Wings dressing room, and operated on.

The veteran defenceman said Zetterberg’s playoff performance reminded him very much of retired Wings captain Steve Yzerman.

“I’d have to think, but Yzerman is the only one,” Chelios said.

Not-So-Gentlemanly Behavior

From Brian Christ at the ABQ Journal.com,

One of the most revered traditions in sports is the handshake ceremony after each Stanley Cup playoff series, when the bloodied warriors on each team line up to offer congratulations to their foes for a job well done. Sportsmanship at its greatest.

It’s just seems incomprehensible, though, how guys who had just been knocking the pus out of each other can all of a sudden start hobnobbing. For me, it’s not uncommon to hold a grudge against someone who takes 3 minutes to heat a pile of rice in the office microwave.

So, is this on-ice glad-handing genuine?

Clean Living Pays Off

From Greg Beacham at the AP (via USA Today):

When Roenick postponed retirement for another Stanley Cup run, he also gave up alcohol for the year. Roenick doesn’t have a drinking problem, yet the 38-year-old forward partly credits his teetotaling for his remarkable resurgence this season, capped by a spectacular Game 7 that sent the Sharks onward to face the Dallas Stars in the second round.

“I think that has a lot to do with it - clean living and making sure that my body is fresh, that there’s no toxins in it,” said Roenick, who had two goals and two assists. “A healthy mind will create a healthy body, and the San Jose Sharks have allowed me to have a healthy mind. I haven’t felt this good in maybe 10 or 15 years, since I was a kid. I feel like I did when I played in Chicago, before Philly and Phoenix, way back when.”

Saskin was ultimately forced to resign and Paul Kelly recently replaced him.

Linden vs Chelios

From Iain Macintyre at the Vancouver Sun,

Eleven years ago, when the Vancouver Canucks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime, Trevor Linden got into Chris Chelios’s face after the winning goal and the pair tussled.

Chelios threw the first punch and, after the players were separated, accused Linden of covering up and refusing to fight. And that was the high point of their relationship. It has devolved the last two years as Chelios leads his crusade for justice within a National Hockey League Players’ Association that Linden, as the union’s former president, led through a labour war that scuttled the 2004-05 season.

Sunday, Linden seemed ready for the fight.

“It’s easy to pile on,” Linden said before facing Chelios and the Detroit Red Wings Sunday night at GM Place. “I will say this: I’m extremely proud of the decisions the [NHLPA] executive committee made. I think we made, in very difficult times, good decisions for the players.”

History Repeats According To Chelios

from the Detroit Free Press,

“I’m very happy with our choice of Paul Kelly. I’m looking forward to working with him and having him represent us as a union. At least we have a leader now, and we’ll look for direction from him.”

Chelios said Kelly’s arrival was reminiscent of Goodenow taking over in 1992 for the disgraced Alan Eagleson.

“I look back,” Chelios said, “and it was the same thing when we hired Bob Goodenow — we’d gone through a lot in the Eagleson era, and then Bob was hired — pretty much same situation, basically. It’s history repeating itself. Look at what he did for us. Hopefully, Paul Kelly can follow that same path that we did with Bob.”
