Neil Not Happy With Ryan Whitney Cross-Check To The Head

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Chris Neil woke up with a headache Wednesday....

While Neil was on the ice for the club’s 30-minute practice Wednesday at the Saddledome, he wasn’t happy the refereees only gave Whitney a two-minute minor.

Not only did Whitney drill Neil in the head, he also caught him in the shoulder.

“That was a headshot, for sure,” said Neil. “You want to get that kind of stuff out of the game. I didn’t even see him coming. I know he’s behind me, but my back is to him. I wasn’t even facing him. That’s the kind of player he is, he’s kind of a backstabber.

“I didn’t really know what happened off the get-go. I’ve seen that play before and guys have gotten a (five-minute major) and kicked out of the game. I know the referees saw the first one (to the shoulder), but they didn’t see the second, obviously.”

Another Knee On Knee Hit Debate

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators’ injury-riddled lineup took another heavy hit with Devils tough guy Andrew Peters responsible for the latest calamity. He knocked winger Chris Neil out of the game with a knee-on-knee hit with six minutes to go in the first period. Neil had gone back to get the puck when Peters came flying in and smashed him, Peters’ knee making contact with Neil’s left knee.

Neil hobbled off the ice, went straight to the dressing room and did not return.

Senators GM Bryan Murray thought the hit was dirty. There was no penalty called.

“(Peters) led with his knee,” he said.

Neil blamed himself.

“I didn’t see anything wrong with it,” said Neil. “I put myself in a vulnerable spot and opened myself up. I got there late and he came barrelling in there. You give your lumps and you take your lumps.”

Neil Gets Payback On Downie

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators finally got even with Steve Downie.

Dean McAmmond might be long gone, but Downie’s cheap shot from two years ago (earning him a 20-game suspension) wasn’t forgotten last night. Chris Neil nailed Downie, a Tampa Bay Lightning winger, with 6:04 left in the third period of a 3-1 pre-season win last night in front of a packed house at the Brandt Centre.

Neil was given a charging minor and game misconduct for his hit along the boards in the dying minutes.

“I didn’t get him as good as I would like to have,” said Neil. “He drops his gloves with me and then he says, ‘Oh, I’m not fighting.’ He tried to flip me. I got him with some good ones. I wish I got him with some better ones.

“I’m not concerned at all (about supplementary discipline). I finished my check. It might have been a little late. It was a clean hit. It’s one of those things. He was just lucky he was able to get me down before I got going.”

Neil May Be Moved If Extension Talks Fail

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Senators GM Bryan Murray told Sun Media yesterday that he’s held talks with Neil’s agent, Todd Reynolds, about a contract extension, but the sides aren’t close to a deal and that could mean Murray will trade the 29-year-old Neil rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent in the off-season.

“For both of our sakes I think it’s fair that we have an answer (by the trade deadline),” Murray said. “I mean, if we’re not close in dollars, then obviously we don’t want to lose players for nothing if we can help it.”

Neil, who is making $1.25 million (all terms US) this season, would not only be a valuable commodity on the open market, he’ll also be a huge asset at the deadline. It’s believed the Senators’ asking price will be at least a second-round draft pick and possibly a prospect.

Big Hit Of The Night

from the Thrashers Blog,

Ottawa’s Chris Neil delivered one heck of a shoulder to Bryan Little 18 minutes into the second period of Tuesday night’s game. Little had his head down, and Thrashers coach John Anderson called it a clean hit, but his players clearly went out to defend their teammate.

Eric Boulton challenged Neil to a fight, and Neil declined, Anderson said. Boris Valabik wagged a finger and talked some smack from the bench.

Senators Lose Fisher & Neil

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

Senators centre Mike Fisher is expected to miss two weeks with strained right knee ligaments, it was announced after practice this morning.

The news is worse on Chris Neil.

The rugged right winger will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. It’s not yet known how long Neil will be out of the lineup.

Motivating Ticket Sales

From Ken Warren at The Ottawa Citizen,

On Thursday night against the Atlanta Thrashers, Ottawa Senators right-winger Chris Neil crossed the fine line he skates as a member of the NHL’s agitator/enforcer class.

It wasn’t the first time, it won’t be the last and, even though Neil was widely criticized for showing off to the crowd while fighting the Thrashers’ Eric Boulton in the second period and for taking a double minor penalty late in the third period, during which Atlanta scored twice—he says he won’t change how he plays the game.

“I’m here, I’m a motivator,” said Neil, taking issue with observers who claimed his WWE-style antics in waving to the crowd during the fight had no place in the game and served to inspire the Thrashers. “I get the fans going and that’s part of my job. That’s a trait I do (during) fights at home games. I don’t do it on the road. It’s for our fans. We don’t sell tickets on the road. We sell them at home.”

Neil Ready To Play Broadway

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Chris Neil is more than willing to dance on Broadway tonight.

The Ottawa winger, who will face the Rangers for the first time since he separated Sean Avery’s shoulder with a hit during last Saturday’s 2-0 win, says he actually hopes New York players try to hunt him down....

“It wasn’t like I hit Jaromir Jagr, I hit Sean Avery. He’s a guy who can stick up for himself as well. You’ve got to be disciplined in the whole situation and don’t put your team down. They might look at sucking you in.”
